Taste isn't that great but with do in a pinch
|
|
As so many people have said, these are truly a personal taste issue. They have a stong vitamin taste to them with an ugly aftertaste. I have tried all of them and can deal with two of the flavors. I used these VERY rarely. I usually buy a box and they last me more than a month. I keep one in my glove box, one in my bookbag and the rest at home. I have used them in a pinch - ie: last minute movie, running late for breakfast or as a lunch when I am too broke to go buy a healthy low carb meal. Funny thing is that they are like a train wreck for me. They're terrible, but once I start one I have to finish it... It does help stave off hunger for a few hours and it's better than nothing in a pinch.

Cons:

addicting taste

I usually purchase only the Carbwise Smore's bars. On this trip, I found the Atkin's Pralines and Cream bar. It has a praline center with a white chocolate coating. Now I have to decide between them daily. I love them both so much! I've tried other Atkin's bars and also like the coconut. My DH loves the PB.
Another fav is the Pria bars but they don't like me as much as I like them.

The oatmeal breakfast ones
|
|
Cons:

all the chocolate ones, ick.

I bring an oatmeal breakfast Advantage bar for lunch every day. The oatmeal with the berries are ok, too. I don't like the other Advantage flavors, but I'm not much of a choco-holic.
Love the oatmeal ones, though!

I generally like all of the bars. I realised that they taste best when they are at room temperature in the humid climate here. They taste horrible (except for Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch) when cold.
Almond Brownie - Love this when I want to eat something like Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch, without the soy crispies. Has a pleasant sweet almondy scent and flavour to it. Definitely a nice brownie substitute.
Berries of the Forest - Found in the UK. I took over 2 months to bring myself to eat some of it. When I first tried this it was the most vile tasting candy I had ever put in my mouth, just like cardboard. Even now I've still got a love/hate relationship with this bar; it is a tad too sweet for my liking even so. Has a strong soy stench. Doesn't taste like berries at all.
Chocolate Coconut - It's alright, but I would pick the other flavours over this. The coconut taste feel rather manufactured, and my tongue felt a little numb after the first try. I'm not a huge fan of coconut.
Chocolate Decadence - Took me a while to get used to, then it became one of my favourites. Rich chocolate taste, like a chocolate brownie. Very satisfying.
Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch - available only in the UK, this is undoubtedly my FAVOURITE. It does not taste like a LC bar at all; even my non-LCing DBF loves it. It has a slight hazelnutty/almondy taste, with the crispiest soy crisps ever! Feels like I'm eating kelloggs' rice crispies coated in melted marshmallows! Absolutely lovely for a treat. Has bits of hazelnuts in it, so keep this for your latter rungs in OWL. Only drawback: this contains maltitol.
Chocolate Mocha Crunch - Another chocolatey bar (Advantage seems to specialise in Choc bars), with soy crisps, but the soy crisps aren't as crispy as those in the above bar. I'm not crazy about this, and I prefer Decadence or Hazelnut over this.
Chocolate Peanut Butter - A good substitute for peanut butter cups. Of all the bars, I find this the most filling of the lot. The peanut is more creamy/fudgy than gritty. Very good.
Cookies N Creme - The most misunderstood bar of all. For the longest time I refused to purchase a bar of this after reading reviews of it. However I decided to try it after being given a carton of it, and to my surprise, this is one of the best cookies and cream bars I've ever tasted! I don't deny that the first bite is vile, but after the 2nd and the 3rd, you'll find that it actually tastes amazing. The trick is to not to eat it when it's cold. I like it at room temp. It truly reminds me of a tub of Hagen Daaz's cookies and cream icecream. Which is beautiful since I can never have that again while on this WOL.
S'mores - Yummilicious, I don't need to say more on this; everyone else has already praised it enough. This is a safe bet if you're thinking of getting an advantage bar for the first time.

Dry, vitamin-y, strong aftertaste. Some textures unpleasant.

I got started on these the first time I tried this WOE. I didn't have much time for breakfast or lunch, so I'd carry these with me and eat them when I got the chance. They're convenient to throw into a purse, backpack, etc and they ARE filling, I'll say that for them.
I've tried all of the flavors and the ones I like best are the peanut butter and the pralines and cream. By "best", I mean "lesser of the evils". I don't think they taste good, and I wouldn't eat them if I had a wider selection available.
I found that the chocolate mocha and the s'mores had hard bits in them that get harder when cold. The first time I bit into a hard marshmallow, I thought I'd chipped a tooth. The cookies n'cream had a decent flavor, by comparison, but was very dry and I eventually had to abandon it. Unfortunately, the freshness of a bar isn't immediately apparent until you bite into it. Sometimes you luck out, sometimes you don't. The coconut had a very unpleasant aftertaste.
Now that I'm doing this WOE successfully, I'm easing up on these bars. I've had three since January and I don't miss them at all!

These were so-so...I like the convienence of them, but the taste leaves something to be desired. Alot of them have that mineral-y chalky taste of nutritional bars...Plus they are kinda pricey.

Not so good. Even the "good" flavors taste bad after 2 or 3 bites. They're convenient but there are enough other convenient foods that taste reasonably decent. They're certainly not worth the price they charge in stores, but I got mine super cheap on ebay and I still question if it was a reasonable deal.

I use them as a meal replacement when I am on the go. I was surprised how good they were. I use to crave chocolate like crazy before starting Atkins and the chocolate decadence satisfies my sweet tooth. They are also very filling.

I don't have a favorite just yet because I really haven't tried them all but I can say the Peanut Butter was not good for me but the Cinnamon Bun was good which goes good with coffee, or just by itself.
