Del Monte Foods has developed the Del Monte Carb Clever brand, a new line of canned fruit that provides the same nutritional benefits of regular canned fruit, but has 50 to 70 percent fewer carbs. The new Del Monte Carb Clever line fills the need for increased fruit intake as part of an overall healthy diet, as well as supplying low-carb dieters a means to satisfy their craving for something sweet without sacrificing their dieting principles. This should provide some comfort to many health and nutrition experts who have become concerned about reports such as those out of the ACNielsen company that report 44 percent of low- carb dieters - an estimated 15 million Americans - have either cut back or stopped eating fruit as a result of the diet. "With the rise of low-carb mania, many dietitians and physicians, myself included, have become concerned that these diets are severely reducing the intake of many beneficial vitamins and minerals found in fruit," said Helenbeth Reiss Reynolds, MPH, RD. "Del Monte Carb Clever offers those on a carb-controlled diet a sensible way of maintaining their diet, while enjoying the great, sweet taste of fruit with all of the health benefits they provide." So, how do they do it? Rather than packing the fruit in heavy syrup or natural fruit juices, Del Monte Carb Clever is packed in water and sweetened with Splenda brand no-calorie sweetener, made from real sugar. Tastes just like the high carb stuff, but less sweet. I use insulin and I didn't notice a rise in my BGL at all. I love this product!
