New, pregnant & trying keep lower carb

Hello all, I joined this site recently and have been poking around. Happy to see this area for women only.

I am 33, pregnant with #3 and morbidly obese. I weighed the same when I gave birth to my lil one in May 2013 as I did when I got pregnant this time. Due Nov 7th. Was 343 this morning. 330 when got pregnant. Had gotten to 280 after I had her but I ate way too much while nursing and tried to justify it because I was trying to stay awake, then I felt hungry all the time, etc etc excuses.

My issue is I am so addicted to carbs. Whenever I used to binge eat, it was almost always carbs the entire binge. Pasta to sweets like donuts, and cereal. I was about 340 when we went on a visit out of state to visit my family. Only gone 10 DAYS and I gained 20 pounds! Crazy. So now that I have got rid of that, I am trying to stay away from carb laden foods but without with holding myself so much that I crave and binge. So more lean meats and veggies for meals instead of pasta or potatoes as the base. Also doing some easy walking on the treadmill a few days a week lately as I live in FL and the humidity has been too hard for doing a lot outdoors for me.

Need to do better this time around as was already so heavy when got pregnant. I was 253 when I got pregnant end of 2012 but lost them in April and I gained over 50 pounds from binging thru the grief. I know I can get healthier, I know I can stick to it for some time. I'm hoping joining sites like this one will help me thru those times I am about to backslide.

So hello to you all

One week sticking to my calorie goals. Proud of myself Tried zucchini 'noodles' yesterday for first time with some spaghetti sauce, pretty tasty now that I know to salt and let them drain first!

Hi Jesse - I'm also pregnant (20 weeks) and obese (226lbs today) I've gained close to 20lbs already since being pregnant - I'm trying to stick to low carb while pregnant and incorporating a few fruits

I live in Florida too - so I completely understand the heat - SOOO hot out

Just wanted to wish you well - maybe we can support eachother thru this

Good luck to you!

Congrats on your pregnancy I am not counting carbs but trying to opt for protein over sweets and high carb options. I am finding what is helping right now is saving calories for night time when I want to eat more and having a burger with veggies, no bun, instead of pastries or cereal like I usually eat late night
I don't have any sweet drinks and mostly water with a diet soda sometimes. Will be drinking OJ tomorrow for my 3d Ultrasound though to make sure she is active in there

awesome! good luck with 3D US today - hope all goes well.

are you finding that you are gaining less each week? losing? maintaining?

I know they say it isn't healthy to not gain weight during pregnancy but I was really hoping to stay under the 30lbs mark for my WHOLE pregnancy. having gained 18lbs and only being halfway there I don't know if that will happen.

I had pre-eclampsia with my daughter and gained 60lbs, so trying to be healthier but it is so darn hard.

Thanks, it's tomorrow morning
I was gaining at first and after going out of state to visit my family and returning to find I had gained 20 pounds I decided to actively try to lose. So I have been slowly losing and lost that 20. I joined the daily weigh in group here via the century group in the hope it will help me stay a little more accountable even though its just to myself. With weighing the same when I conceived this time as I was when I was 9 months with my others, my goal is to gain nothing by the time its over. It is getting harder lately but the plan it to be same weight on day I have her as I was when I conceived. I know about 15-20 lbs will be baby, fluids, etc but that's my goal.

Hi Jesse and Cris,
I am so happy to find your posts regarding pregnancy and low carb, We are due December 10. Have gained 30 lbs.
But since started eating high carbs food and was feeling very sick and it hit me that it was due to crabs so this week I am back watching the diet with good vegetables, salads, omelet, I feel better and I hope the same for the baby. Keep the good work and even if you indulge there is always a way back.

Hello passinby. Congrats on your lil one Is this your first?
I had to up my intake a couple weeks ago, didn't realize I was going too much under especially for the last couple month of pregnancy with brain development but I have been logging everything and making healthy choices 80% which is the plan for me. I found out long ago if I restrict too much or go super healthy/no sweets & treats I end up binging. I have 5 weeks to go from this Friday and am trying to just maintain around my pre pregnancy weight (330) and am sooo happy I didn't just so 'oh well' when I had gotten up to 360 in June whew. Shocked with what I'm eating now I am not gaining so that's been a relief. Trying to keep active as possible although sciatica is terrible and have stopped regular walking on treadmill at least recently. Swimming is great though and chasing 2 lil ones keeps me pretty active at least

I also eat lots of veggies, salads(Caesar) and eggs. I pre plan my menu so I am not looking for food while hungry and also so I can make sure I am getting the right amounts of proteins and other things. And allowing for things I want and not go over my goals for the day-like ice cream, chips, cookies in the PM. I am sleeping so much better now!

Hey Jeese,
This is our second one and as of yesterday we have 10 weeks left or I should say approximately. Since cutting back on carbs I did not gain any pounds in about 3 weeks now which is great but I do feel quite heavy, and as far as sleeping I toss around a lot and sweat like crazy. Its not easy but possible, I try to watch it and today I am making pumpkin pie keep up the good work

My belly is feeling heavier the past couple weeks but I know its from baby not me gaining fat. I have 5 weeks to go from today, until my scheduled c section.
I have made pumpkin pie with no crust, I don't miss it at all. Tried with splenda before as well and pretty good.

Never tried pumpkin pie without the crust, and usually I put half of the sugar and half splenda and it tastes really good. I cant give up my pumpkin pie even if it means low carb. I would rather not have it but I only do it around this time of the year. Last week at Costco I grabbed 3 more cans and a pack of evaporated milk ....love that pumpkin pies.

By the way is this your fist C section? I really dont want that and I pray that it will never happen. I also gained 6 lbs reaching 186 lbs all togeher. Its quite heavy for me but I know that in only 10 weeks I am going back))))))).
Since watching the carb intake all togheter it makse me feel better even if I eat more calories still feels good.

No this is my 3rd. First was an emergency, then couldn't find anywhere that would let me try for VBAC once we moved to FL. So had a scheduled one last time and will be this time as well.
I agree it feels good to stick to a plan while pregnant as otherwise I just give in to all temptation. Are you planning to do lower carb and nurse?

I do plan to continue low carb during nursing and also considering to get the best for the baby. I also got a herbal supplement for milk production if I am going to need it its called Fenugreek. First off all I got it for my husband that has Diabetes and its good for digestion and metabolism, do a search on Fenugreek and see if you are going to need anything like that. Also ask your Dr. about this, I will use it in case of shortage.
At this point time seems to run slower as we get closer as for you 4 weeks and ta da . Blessings and have fun

Never had issue with milk production unless I dropped calories too low. I have heard of fenugreek as well as lactation cookies ie brewers yeast, oatmeal, and flax seed being good for bumping it up. Never tried anything personally but quite a few on my pregnancy boards/groups have made mention of them working. Just had read varying views and success about low carb while nursing so still haven't made up my mind for sure yet.
