Groin Pain
 
I am 58 and have been an active jogger for 20+ years. No issues other than I had to have both knees repaired with tears but I think that was from doing too many squats, lunges, etc. because jogging never bothered them.

Since last April, 2013 I have been having some groin pain. I went to the gyn because I had the groin pain which affected alot of stuff down there. I already knew I had fibroids. They did an ultrasound and found a cyst on both ovaries. Not real big, poo pooed that they were causing the pain. I also have vulvodynia which the specialist felt was the issue and sent me to PT for pelvic floor dysfunction. I did that about 6 times and it did help with the vulvodynia but I still had groin pain.

So I'm back to more running since mid-march since the weather has gotten better here in Ohio. Alot of pain, I don't feel it when I'm running but when I come home and sit, wow, it hurts to walk and get up. Yesss, I stretch very well. The vulvodynia is manageable but can be flared by the groin pain.

I've got an appt with the gyn for another ultrasound because I called them to tell them it's actually worse than b4. I also have an appt with the orthopedic surgeon who repaired my knees.

Can anyone relate to this? My feeling is that if I have cysts on the ovaries that they are jarred or whatever that it could cause the groin pain..

I hope you find some reason for your pain and they can fix it. :hugs:

until then, maybe try a different sport, something low impact. Swimming might be easier on your body.

I have cysts on my ovaries but they don't cause me any pain (post menopausal). I lift weights and do squats, lunges and leg press on a 14-inch bench with 25 pounds on my shoulders; I know that's not very heavy, but it keeps me in shape. I also do 30 minutes on a climber stepper, and never felt pain from the cysts. I just wanted to comment that I have a friend who had hip replacement surgery last year. I asked her how the pain started and she said it started out as groin pain. So, please be aware that this could be a hip issue. I hope it gets worked out for you soon.

This sounds rather unpleasant and I hope you figure out what it is soon.

Can you tell me/us exactly where it hurts? Is it right down the middle of your pubis? Or is it off center?

I ask because I was previously on a birth control pill that caused me massive gastro and hormonal issues. Among the stranger things I experienced, my pelvis started to separate as if I was preparing to give birth. For me the pain radiated from the areas where the connective tissue loosened. It was agonizing. Thankfully, I went off the pill and time fixed it.

If you're on hormones or having issues in that area, this might be something to consider, even it if's something of a long shot.

the pain is right along the crease of where my leg meets my pelvis. Stupid me, I never realized yr ovaries were that low.

I am on progesterone and use estrace cream for the vulyodynia, only alittle dab, way less than a pee size, couple times a wk. I also have fibroids which I'd hoped would have went away with meno but didnt. The hip thing does worry me as i do have some pain but thought it was sciata.

I have noticed sometimes I have some rectal pain, I just think with whatevers going on, the nerves are just firing like crazy.

I had my ultrasound yesterday and just got the results. The fibroids are still
there - and cyst on both ovaries. The one is alittle bigger at .8 mm and other .6 mm

The doctor doesn't think the pain is coming from the ovaries and told me to go ahead and see the orthopedic surgeon to have him check muscular/skeleton. If nothing there I'm to call them back. It's still hard for me to not think it's related to the ovaries because that's exactly where the pain is but i'm not a doctor. We shall see.....

Thank you - I do think that GO4IT's link is interesting too because I do seem to have hip issues. I'm more flexible than I was but I can't sit indian style for the life of me. My knees won't go down at all but that's that way it's been since I was a wee lass!!!!

hi there last month i was diagnosed with a 9cm uterine fibroid they also found small fibroid on cervix, i have really low tummy ache, wanna pee a lot and suffer constipation, now ive got a real grotty pain in my lower back that is making both my hips hurt ouch, sad thing is im off on holiday next week for a month in europe, seeing dr on the 18th june to discuss treatment options, still one good thing i am 15 days into induction ive lost 8 pounds out of the 28 i need to loose, everyday my keto sticks are purple and my holiday clothes are feeling better, so not all bad, i guess i should pack some pain relief and some laxatives lol, good luck to everyone xx

Oh, ZEP, I'm 58 and still have the dang fibroids that were found in my 40's!!! I can't figure out why they don't go away and I now have a cyst on both ovaries. Both about
8mm which they say are too small to cause an issue but the fibroids are bigger and one is posterior which I guess would be harder to get to to remove but I think it's part of my constipation issue.

Anyway, went to the orthopedic surgeon for the groin pain. Hips look great on the xrays but I have extremely tight hip flexors. I've known that for years. When I sit try to sit and do the inner stretch with my knees bent up they absolutely don't budge down at all. Soooo, I've got the stop the running for 6 weeks, do low impact and 6 wks of PT to try to loosen/stretch the hip flexors and go from there. If pain persists, I'm headed back to gyn to look further into the cysts/fibroids since the groin pain is exactly where my ovaries are.....

I'm really glad to hear that the ortho guy didn't find anything wrong with your hip joints though. That's something of a relief.
Hopefully you following his advice will yield good things.

I am glad you had your hips checked out and are fine there for nerve impingement.

Another consideration.......if the pain is bilateral it may be coming from the spine. A good chiropractor may help with this. It is worth a quick consult if it gets you pain relief.

I have hip pain too and it didn't show up on the x-ray. After months of seeing the dr with no improvement, he finally sent me for an MRI. MRI revealed a bone cyst that caused the hip socket to become inflamed when I walked or ran. No real treatment other than rest and anti-inflammatories. You may want to pursue the MRI if you don't get any relief.

The doctor did say if I don't have improvement that he will do an mri.

Wow, went for the PT after work yesterday. After about 5 minutes of it I told the therapist I thought I'd just stop running. Omg, it was pretty rough!!! I told him he was probably just going to have to break the joints to get them to move. Then he had me use bands and I stretched my legs, one at a time over my head.....never, ever, ever would stretch like that after running. I'm just hopeful that it will get easier!! They also stood me on this thing that vibrated all over your body - I couldn't take it, I thought I was going to scream because it jarred your entire body and made your ears ring. I thought i was going wacko. He had me do a runners lunge on it with only my knee on it and that went better.

Weird thing though - I thought I slept good but then I woke up quite a few times thinking I was smelling something - like on my hands, but I didn't seem to have bad breath - like when you are in ketosis and there was no way that I am. It was an odd smell. Now, my husband and I did start taking a garlic tab about a week ago and I hadn't noticed any smell with that at all but I wondered if that was now full in my system. I called the PT's office to ask them if they'd heard of anything like that and they said it was possible that I was releasing toxins. Heck, I thought my head was going to explode on that shakey machine!!!

Well, I've had about 5 PT's so far. Brutal. My knees just won't budge or give but we're working on it.

I've only been walking, low impact. The groin pain is less but I kind of have new aches from all the stretching. I think I got alittle stretch happy and pulled something in my thigh so now I've got that going on. I have the therapist put the TENS unit on it. It does feel better. I've got about 3 wks left and they will reevaluate it. Believe me, I'm counting down the days!!!

Update 5 weeks later. I am more flexible, was walking 3 miles, 4-5 times a week. Groin pain has lessoned. But, (and it's better) I got numbness on the left leg, above and around the knee about halfway up my thigh. The PT thinks there is something going on in my back.. I've stopped a few of the stretches that seem to "snap" my knee and I hate that feeling. You can't take a tight 58 year old and suddenly make them pliable. Like i told the PT, I've just exchanged one issue for another. I see the orthopedic surgeon on Monday, June 16 to discuss where to go from here.......

oh, and I did run 3 miles last night after work. No groin pain - but, I didn't sit most of the night, was up and doing stuff. I noticed alot of the groin pain after running, then sitting watching tv and then getting up

Update. I had 2 mri's. One on lower back and one pelvic. Had a panic attack at the end of the 1st one. Horrible clanging and sirens - new addition that they added to mri's. It sounded like a horrible scarey movie and would have been nice if theyed warned me. Took awhile to calm down for the 2nd one. They each last 40 min. I had to do breathing to try to stay calm and then I had to count to hundreds to keep my mind off hoe claustophopic I felt! Horrible experience.

Results. Mild buldging disc at L4-5 in back.
Mild degeneration in pubis. Arthritis is what the doc said and explains alot. Common with athletes or even football players. I guess my 25 + yrs of jogging have caught up w me. Going to cut back and walk and use my treadclimber. I picked up a portable TENS unit and will continue with all the new stretches that I've learned thru this ordeal as well as those I've always done.
