Good Hair products for post-menopausal thinning hair?

I went though menopause about seven years ago; I'm now 62 and have to say that I'm not enjoying getting older I guess I was in denial but it recently became very clear to me that my hair is thinning at the roots. I've always found quite a bit of hair in my drain hair catcher after showering, but I never noticed the results on my head until recently. At the crown, I can see scalp in areas where I couldn't before. I'd like to try to keep it from thinning more or at least slow down the process. Can anyone recommend an effective shampoo and conditioner that can help with this issue? I'm now using a shampoo & conditioner I bought online called "Age Beautiful", but I don't think it's for fighting thinning hair. Thank you all!

I have no suggestions, but wanted to commiserate, and hope someone has a solution. I've just solidly entered perimenopause (I'm 53) and I've noticed that my once super-thick hair is now ... not so much so. And my hairbrush is constantly full of hair that's coming out.

A week or so back, I started taking krill oil supplements. as Omega-3s are supposed to be good for hair growth, among other things. Krill oil doesn't cause the fish burps, and some sources say that the body utilizes it better than other fish oils. So I'm hoping to see some improvement from that.

Also, the coconut oil is supposed to help. I've added a tablespoon of that every day.

As for just grooming cheats, I found a product by Got 2b called "Powder'ful Volumizing Styling Powder." You sprinkle a tiny bit, like a half teaspoon, in your hands and work it into the roots of the hair. It feels a little dry, but it does an amazing job of thickening up the base.

Thank you, SeriouslyFunny (love your name ). I've been planning to switch to Krill Oil as soon as my supply of Fish Oil runs out as I've heard the same as you about it.

this was discussed at my hair place when I was there the other day. one stylist (very intelligent) recommended Rogaine. OF COURSE. this is proven effective. you can't stop it though or you lose the new growth.

other than that, you can do this and that and hope it helps, but there is a lot to say for those things (I forget the word, sorry!) that you stick in your hairstyle to add hair. Getting a good one, or several, that really match your hair and learning how to use them... I have seen these women put them in and suddenly double their apparent hair. it wont help the scalp part though. that can be minimized with a discreetly applied powder the color of your hair that makes the scalp at the part less visible. I think they make things for this, but no reason really not to use eyeshadow that matches. it comes in so many colors

I do know about all of that because my sister has been going through this for many years. The Rogaine didn't work for her and she didn't like the hair pieces, but she does use the powder. She also spent a lot of money for a laser comb that did not work either, but she was able to send it back for a refund. But I'm not really there yet; I don't need to make my hair grow back, or to hide how much it's thinned as it really isn't that noticeable yet. What I'd like to do is buy a shampoo & conditioner that claims to slow down hair loss, which I've seen advertised but of course I cannot remember the name. I was just wondering if anyone on this forum has used and liked a shampoo & conditioner that has helped them in that area.

I go through this with thryoid/hormonal issues and taking a prenatal vitamin really helps. I find it's the best way to get in all those B vitamins and other things that may not be in your multi (like choline and selenium). I take the rainbow light brand.

If you can tolerate supplements, all the oils help (fish oil, coconut, borage, CLA and caprylic acid), magensium, biotin, collagen (fish), vitamin C. I read that horsetail is good, but I've never taken that. If I think of any others, I will let you know.

I sincerely suggest that you try "co-washing" your hair. That means not using shampoo, but only using conditioner. It takes awhile to get your scalp used to the idea, but your hair and scalp will thank you! I use "It's a 10 Miracle Daily Conditioner" but there are products made for this purpose (like Wen) and products for us curly-haired gals. I use the daily conditioner on my scalp since it doesn't leave residue and moisturizes well. I use something a bit heavier on my ends, especially during the winter when it's so dry here. I don't have a problem with greasy scalp and can go 2-3 days without washing now. Some people do a rinse with watered down apple cider vinegar, with mother as well. It helps balance the Ph. Google - there is a wealth of info and instructions.

I also suggest buying some good oils and massaging them onto your scalp. I used to do this a lot when my psoriasis was bad - I just slept with a towel over my pillow. I used a mix of oils - coconut, olive, squalene, argan, 777 (Ayuvardic), and added essential oils like rosemary, tea tree, lavendar, bergamot, juniper berry, etc. I think rosemary and tea tree are key here (lavendar is also great too). There are also oild you can buy (like at Sally's) that are supposed to be good for hair growth - I always threw a few squirts of those in there too, or did those as a separate treatment.

I've gone through periods after surgeries or other issues where my hormones went CRAZY and all of this really, really helped. It seems like a lot of work, but it's worth it. Thanks, DD80, you've given me quite a bit of information to ponder. I actually found a shampoo that I like called "Age Beautiful"; it's sulfate free and doesn't lather as much as regular shampoos and doesn't tangle my hair, although I do use the conditioner as well. Thank you again, I do appreciate your taking the time to post your comprehensive reply.

Ahem! I have tried them all. At least it feels like I have. Many make claims, and only one or two actually do what they say they will do, make your hair fuller. Currently, I am using a regimen by Bosley(Professional Strength For Women to Treat Hair Loss from Bosley), which includes 5 steps(a bit time consuming, but probably equal to the amount of time putting on my face every morning). This in addition to vitamins and changing my diet up has greatly contributed to my thicker fuller hair. I actually buy my shampoo from the salon, mine in particular carries their product.

I wanted to add that I've started using sulfate-free shampoo, and it helps. I also got this stuff called Marrakesh X from a company called a Earthly Bodies that's a leave-in detangler/conditioner with hemp an argan oils. It smells divine, and I swear my hair is thicker and shinier because of it.

I checked out Bosley....pricey, plus one of the steps is Minoxidil which I'm not really ready for. I do use sulfate free shampoo and I like it; I thought it wouldn't lather as much as it does (I like the lather, although I read that lather isn't particularly a good thing). Next step is to check out Marrakesh X. I appreciate all your responses.

I answered this back in November, and had just started trying to re-thicken my perimenopausal hair. I wanted to check back in and say -- it worked!

I'm in that pre-menopause stage, and I'd noticed my once-very-damn-thick hair was a lot thinner, and dry, and lackluster. There was a LOT of fallout in my brush and shower, too.

Four months later, my hair is nearly back to the thickness it used to be. Yeah, I'm a lot grayer (under the color ) than I once was, but the thickness and health is nearly back to where it was.

Here's what changed:

Coconut oil, in my morning coffee and added to meals. 1-3 Tbsp. every day.
Krill oil supplements -- loaded with Omega-3, and no fish burps.
Daily multivitamin
Sulfate-free shampoo only. It doesn't suds up like the other stuff, but SO much better for your hair.
Leave-in conditioner/detangler with hemp oil and argan oil. The brand I'm using is Marrakesh, by Earthly Body. Five or six spritzes after washing, comb through. And it smells divine.

It's made an ENORMOUS difference. The fallout has decreased substantially, and my hair looks and feels so much healthier. So ... FYI.

I've tried all of the supplements with no luck. I just started using Progesta-Care, a progesterone cream, that I bought at the Vitamin Shoppe. My hair stopped falling out in two days. I haven't seen regrowth yet, but I've only been using it a month.

I read about estrogen dominance and the side effects of low progesterone. Hair loss, breast cysts, ovarian cysts, and migraine headaches were some of the side effects and I have them all. The hair loss has definitely stopped, so far so good.

I lost a lot of hair when I lost weight after going LC. I researched online and found out about Nizoral shampoo -- it's a dandruff shampoo and that contains ketoconazole, and it is said that it helps combat hair loss. I used it for awhile but then supplies ran short for some reason. I see it's available again on the internet. You might want to check that out. When I stopped using that I started taking biotin and using the male-strength Rogaine (the female strenth variety is worthless, according to my hairdresser). My hair has definitely improved since, though I don't know the reason (maybe none of these things work, but I'll keep using them.)

Seconding the Rosemary essential oil..put it in your shampoo...put fresh twigs and steep in your water (yum)...Rosemary is amazing for hair loss.

I just checked back to find all your responses, and I thank you. So far the biotin hasn't made much of a difference I don't want to try too many things at once because I won't know what's working and what isn't. It's very unnerving to brush my hair and see some scalp showing. I've been preoccupied with my Mom and haven't been concentrating on myself, but I intend to check out all your suggestions. Thank you again!
