Women only - - TMI for men

This is my second week Low-carb, gluten free and I just got my period again, 2 week early.

Did this happen to anyone else? I have low carbed before and never had this, but it could be fun with beginnings of good old menopause yaya oh joy

When in doubt, ask your doctor, but something like that happening once isn't necessarily cause for concern if you don't have other symptoms to go with it. If it becomes a pattern I would make a Dr. appt.

Pixelchick, low carb dieting always changes my cycle - happens almost every time. It really isn't cause for concern - just hormomal adjustments because you have radically changed what you are eating.

Apparantly fat can bind up estrogen, because when I started losing weight I went from not having periods but rarely to bleeding all the time. Actually had to go on BC pills to get it under control. Now that I'm mostly stalled, I'm back to normal.

This just happened to me too!
I am just on my third week back on LC and TOM came last week. Almost exactly two weeks before I usually get it. Odd, huh?

Yes, it usually has to do with estrogen (and other hormones) being released from fat cells. It isn't to do with LC in particular, but losing weight in general; it can affect the menstrual cycle.

I've had the same thing, plus terrible cramps, which I barely have when I'm not low-carbing. I went searching for relief and discovered there are foods that counter estrogen. Eating 1 TB ground flaxseed/day helps a lot because it contains lignans, which reduce the levels of free estrogen in your blood. Eating flax results in longer menstrual cycle length, increased progesterone-to-estrogen ratios, and fewer anovulatory cycles. Cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts) also help your body break down excess estrogen in your system.
