So I had my first OB appointment yesterday, the doc said the baby looked great, BUT.....
she said there was a lot of sugar in my urine, sent me for lab work. She said if I'm having really high blood sugar she might hospitalize me for a couple of days to bring it down.
Funny cause I've been checking my blood sugars at home after hearing this news and they are normal. I'm basically waiting for them to get the results, I could get a call at any time to report to the hospital.

Lori-that is odd that you have no high numbers on your meter, yet they found it in your urine. Have you ever had any problems with blood sugars before? I can't remember if you told us or not.

2 years ago I was borderline diabetic when I weighed 280-290, thru diet and weight loss I reversed it. But I've since gained some weight back and am around 250 again. So it's likely it's come back.

She said if its gestational diabetes thats ok, but if its regular diabetes then we need to move me to a high risk doc.

Diabetes is very dangerous, no matter what kind. It can also effect the fetus as it goes through the placenta and the baby will be born insulin resistant. There are so many serious health concern with diabetes, please take care of yourself! You deserve to be healthy.

Ugh, gotta post quickly - work, work, work! I was up 'til 3am (then got up at 6) working. I'll be working over the weekend as well.

We're not giving Ben food yet - I don't think he's ready. I want to wait until he can sit up better (preferably unassisted). Avocado will be his first food. He stares at us when we're eating, but, well, he watches us do anything, so I don't take that as any kind of cue or sign :P He'll have his whole life to eat food. I'm in the "no rush" boat

I ate very well all day yesterday, but then in the wee hours last night, I caved to the fatigue and stress. 2 chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches and a Kashi bar later...

Lori-I also think it's too early to diagnose gestational diabetes...I don't think that can be diagnosed until you are much further along (around 20 weeks or so I think). I still think it's weird that your own testing doesn't show high numbers. Did they take blood to do an A1c check? That can tell them a lot. Also, are your test strips out of date by chance?

I just read about it in Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, last night. He went into more detail about how it will effect the fetus for life and a lifetime of weight issues. I never knew this, it is worth reading.

ha, is it awful that I have never read a book by Taubes, but I recommend his books to others? :P I recommend them to people who don't seem to "get" or believe that we don't need carbs, fat is not evil, etc. I'm already on board with those concepts and have probably actually read a lot of the studies he cites as references, but not his actual books

Well I just came back from my first OB appointment, and it was very underwhelming. Before even seeing the doc, they sent me to talk to the insurance rep to tell me that doctor visits are not covered by my insurance (I have maternity coverage, so what exactly are they covering?). Then I basically peed in a cup to confirm pregnancy and had a pelvic exam. Then the doc handed me an information sheet that looked like something you'd get at a routine Gyno exam, not for pregnancy. My husband and I left confused. This really wasn't any more than a gyno exam, so it felt like a waste of time (and money!!). He also said my first ultrasound won't be until 18-20 weeks! ouch!

My doctors here isnt very personable either. When I was pregnant with my son it was a lot "nicer". Don't be put off. Go to your next appointment with questions and make them talk to you.

Also, it's not uncommon to not have an ultrasound until then. My BFF didn't.

That's odd, they didn't even want to do a dating ultrasound? Did they offer you the sequential screening test? They do that at 12 weeks I think, and that includes a nice long ultrasound.

I have no idea what's going to happen at my next appointment next month, which will put me at 12 weeks...the only thing he mentioned was doing an ultrasound at 18-20 weeks to get a more accurate due date and possibly see the gender. The receptionist did say that my next appointment will be over 2 hours, so maybe they'll be doing lab work? i have no clue.

My doc here didn't offer the screening at 12 weeks. I don't know why some offer it and some don't.
