The shot and Lo Carb

Hello ladies,

I'm in my first week of induction, and at the end of my next cycle I plan to start the shot (form of birth control also called Depo Provera).

I'm wondering if anyone else has had the shot and whether they have noticed any quirks that may be diet + BC method related. For instance, in a thread I saw someone had mentioned that although they had been successful on Atkins for a number of years, after a couple years being on birth control (pills, however, I believe) they developed an insulin resistance. This kind of thing probably isn't normal, but just how often does it happen?

Thanks for any input!

You might want to check the package insert. Here are a few select points related to weight gain:

3. Weight Changes
There is a tendency for women to gain weight while on
therapy with DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive Injection.
From an initial average body weight of 136 lb, women
who completed 1 year of therapy with DEPO-PROVERA
Contraceptive Injection gained an average of 5.4 lb.
Women who completed 2 years of therapy gained an
average of 8.1 lb.
Women who completed 4 years gained an average of
13.8 lb. Women who completed 6 years gained an average
of 16.5 lb. Two percent of women withdrew from a
large-scale clinical trial because of excessive weight gain.

6. Carbohydrate Metabolism
A decrease in glucose tolerance (think insulin resistance) has been observed in some patients on DEPO-PROVERA Contraceptive
Injection treatment. The mechanism of this decrease is
obscure. For this reason, diabetic patients should be
carefully observed while receiving such therapy.

The stats on insulin resistance are not provided, but I think they are probably common as all hormonal birth control methods have this type of side effect.

Good Luck!

Wow! Thanks for that information... I guess the insulin thing I really will have to keep an eye on. Hopefully since exercise is part of my diet plan, I'll be able to avoid the weight gain issue too! I've heard from a few people that they've avoided the weight gain by making sure they kept up a good gym routine, so I assume this doesn't have to apply to everyone if one is diligent enough.
