I think is all of the hormones they add to animals that we eat. Girls are developing earlier than 20-30 years ago.

Mine started 2 days after my 11th birthday. I know of a number of girls who began at 9 and 10, during recent years.

Did you know (according to my gynie), if you start early you are likely to finish later; and if you start later, you are likely to finish earlier? Doesn't seem very fair!

I had just turned 9 a couple months before I started, but they were light. As I got older, they got heavier until my mom had to take me to the dr due to me passing out from the pains of the cramping.

my ex best friend started when she was 9ish. I was almost 12 when I started. My mom didn't start till she was like 16 or something though. LOL. Lucky her.

But to whoever said that they think its because of the hormones added to our food, I believe you are 100% right. I read a study a while back that said americans generally start their periods earlier than girls from countries where they eat healthier diets...

WOE: Eating Clean / P90X Round 4!!!
Start Date: Jan 10, 2005
I know of a girl who started her period when she was just 4 years old. She was the daughter of one of my mom's good friends. This was years ago and it was shock at the time. It was something to do with her hormones. She was a really big child for her age also. She was really, really tall and towered over all of the other 4 year olds in her sunday school class. Anyway, the doctors had to do something to slow her growth/hormones down to "stop" her from having a menstrual cycle at such a young age. This was years ago. She is now a 31 year old, wife and mother of very healthy children of her own, whom, to my knowledge have no health problems of any kind.

I don't rember where I read this. A verry large study looked at this issue and it seems to
be tied into weight. I do not rember the exact figures but it seems like this is triggered at
about 83lbs. Now in ~1860 girls didn't reach 83 pounds till they were ~18 years old and
the age for the first period was ~18. Over the years the age that girls reached 83lbs has steadily decreased and the age of the first period has occured sooner too. I believe
by about 1920 the average age of this happening was about 15 I sure don't think they
used hormones in foods in the 1920's. One other finding was if you lived at a realy high
altitude weight gain in children is slower and the age of the first period is also a lot later
again pointing to the weight triggering this change.

Mine started at 12, my sisters at 11. I was a fat kid, she was a stick. And neither one of has grown up anywhere any hormone fed american cows. So, yeah, it happens, and none of the explanations here are applicable.

OP, why do you ask?

I don't know about "83 lbs" but I do know that it is far more common in girls who are very overweight for their age. Similarly, people who are anorexic often stop having their periods from lack of body fat. Is she overweight?

How about those of you who say you started that young; were you heavy? I was average weight and started at 12. However, I ended up with ovarian failure in my 20's and only had periods from then on if I took contraceptive pills or hormones.

Don't know what that has to do with anything, but I got carried away...

Yes I remember my friend/neighbor got hers at age 9. She also 'developed' much earlier than the rest of us.

I was 11, normal weight and size.

My mother still can't believe that at 48 I am still getting normal cycles. I'd love to be done with the inconvenience, but otherwise glad there have not been any symptoms of peri or menopause for me. I've got many friends my age complaining of hot flashes, etc.
