TIME CHECK - old chicks only

Okay so I've decided I must have gone through menopause, because TOM hasn't been around since June. And I'm totally cool with that.

What I am NOT cool with is the darn hot flashes! I toss and turn all night kicking the covers off and pulling them back on. Driving DH crazy as well - like sleeping with a whirling dervish.

Sooo, the question is I'm looking for a time check. How long before this all goes away? These are seriously getting old and it's only been 2 months!

Oh, hon, you do NOT want to know the answer to that question.
It can take years and years for symptoms to go away. I am perimenopausal, which to me means: irregular periods, night sweats (not really what I would call hot flashes) and just generally feeling very up and down, hormonally.
Many friends I have known have gone ages with no period, then bam, they are back again.
I do not know how old you are or whether you had any symptoms prior to the ones you described, but hopefully you are not just beginning the whole process!!

It can take years but Black Cohash can help with relief. There are some herbal formulas out there too that can be specific to you.....

Well. . . .maybe. My niece had to have a DNC due to using Black Cohash. Just 'cause it's natural doesn't mean it's safe for YOUR body!

Check out dietary issues that might relieve hot flashes at night. A friend told me that anytime she had sugar, she'd get hot flashes and eliminated them by eliminating sugar. I rarely eat sugar--and rarely had hot flashes, but I realized that anytime I indulged (special occasions), I'd have a hot flash that night. I think artificial sweeteners affect me similarly and have cut those out as well.

It can be any food sensitivity (e.g., dairy) that's not significant enough to bother you normally but can induce hot flashes in menopause.

This isn't the entire story, of course, but if it's any food, it's worth it to find out.

It doesn't matter what I eat, I still get them. My mother is 73 and she still occasionally gets them.

They have gotten better for me - less frequent and less intense, but I still get them. I dress in layers so I can always remove something if I get hot. I have fans in every room of my house. I keep ice water handy - really helps when I feel one coming on.

I only get them now with the season changes (go figure) and when I eat soy.
I'm guessing I started about 6 years ago. Nothing helped except ceiling fan in bedroom is A MUST!

Not sure exactly how long.

Started about age 50 and I know they were gone for the most part by 52.
Maybe once every year or two after that.

No one I know was helped by any food or supplement ... other than an Rx.
I opted to go through it with no meds. I'm many years 'post' now.

raising hand for hot flashes. They come and go. No Tom since May but I still break into a spontaneous sweat periodically. (not to mention the downy peach fuzz that has appeared on my face! Charming)

Geesh you young people I can't keep up with you. I am new to what people are calling their period. Tom?...Why is it called Tom anyways and when did that change from Aunt Flo?

Anyways I am in menopause too (53) and Dr had to put me on Celexa. It saved me and I love it! I got so moody, depressed, cloudy headed, itchy, irritable that hubby was threatening divorce LOL. I really needed something to get me through it. But I will probably stay on it regardless cause I just have this feeling of well being, like I use too.

I became para-menopausal somewhere around 37 and reached post-menopause around 61 or so. It seems to last forever for some. I had a girlfriend that just "quit" her monthly at 45 and never had another symptom - lucky dog!!! I suffered miserably!

Absolutely. Natural does not always mean safer due to biochemical individuality. Medicines are generally derived from herbs ie: feverfew was the original aspirin.

This is a support board riddled with suggestion.....it is up to the posters to satisfy themselves with research, doctor approval etc.

Sounds like endometriosis or something similar may have been an issue for your niece. I'm sorry she had issues with the cohash.

I take it and it has been beneficial for me.

At 32 I started with the ridiculously heavy and long periods, hot flashes, etc and finally, at age 46, I was pronounced "post menopausal". It's been a rough 14 years! I still have hot flashes now and then but nothing like I used to. Hang on to your hat, 2muttsmom, you might be in for a wild ride!

This might be the right place to grumble about having had PMS feelings for days, and I'm only up to day 18, so there could be another week or more to go .

I only had one period in the first six months of the year, and I was really getting used to it. I've had three since then . Surely it must stop soon?
