I was taking a pregnenolone supplement for a year or two but the doc took me off because my blood work showed my % too high six months ago (I was taking two capsules a day. I'm waiting for my new blood work to see what's happening now.

The effect I noticed was my memory improved after about 2 months on it.

jenna, was a particular hormone too high? Or just all around? What mg's did you take daily? And finally, if I may be so rude to ask your age and time of cycle? I'm fascinated with this particular supplement. I've heard great things about the memory improvement.

Just the pregnenolone got out of range ie... High on Blood Work. I've been on Bio's for 2 years now and in the middle of meno/peri transition.

I'm 53 and started perimenopause at 40 and the damn cycle of ups and downs and strange emotions continued until I was 49. My birthday month was my first skipped period. I went through 2 years of hell trying to transition naturally but it didn't take LMAO.

Finally after two years of not having a night of unbroken sleep I went to my doctor. She essentially said "suck it up and take some vitamins". I would have horrible hot flashes all night long. Never during the day, oh no, just climb in bed and off they'd go. I went to another doctor and finally got on the Bio's. Now this doctor didn't really understand them and my thyroid got worse with her treatment (I did a lot of research at the time and it was the way she had me take them). I went to a professional "Holtorf Medical Group" and finally got relief.

My understanding only 35% or more of the women have the menopause from Hell and some women have no problem at all. I was in the former.

I think my last period if you could call it that was maybe 6 months ago. I'm only having one maybe 3x -4x's a year now.

I bought my pregnenolone off the web at the above link. Same brand my doctor uses and of course cheaper then buying it from him.

Fawn after you mentioned it, i did some reading on it. It does look very promising though i admit i know nothing about it.

Pregnenolone and Mental Function Energizing, Anti-stress Benefits Pro-memory Effects Mood Elevation
In reading, i came across this.
Quote:
we age, the body produces ever-less of the enzyme which converts pregnenolone to DHEA. Thus, while supplementary pregnenolone taken during middle age and beyond will produce at least some normalization back toward more youthful (and healthful) levels of other steroid hormones, pregnenolone will not completely substitute for other steroid hormone supplements in those with medically demonstrated needs for various specific steroids i.e., DHEA, cortisol, estrogen, etc.
I wonder if it would be much like the flax oil/weak conversion in middle age women particularly, who lack the enzymes to convert that.

Dunno though.

My doctor has me taking pregnenolone based off testing but I honestly don't notice a difference in memory. What I have noticed is I don't get the swollen ankles when it's that time of the month.

I forgot to ad my doctor has me on Bio-Identical Hormones too. She is great about using blood work to get to the root of any problems you might be having.

I'm going to be a guinnea pig with the pregnenolone. I've started taking Black Cohash and it is helping with the libido......so I will report back in a few weeks with my results. I'm starting to get the feeling of shift in my body at 45 so I want to hop on this quick.

My doctor put me back on the pregnenolone yesterday but only one a day. In the past I was taking one in the morning and one at night and my Blood tests showed it to be too much for the body.

btw... I took Black Cohash off and on for a few years before I went to BIHRT. It did help in the beginning but eventually my symptoms (of the menopause from hell) far exceeded what it could do for me.

You may not have a problem at all, it depends on your line. It's only 35-38% that bite the big one. I just happen to win the lottery.

Hi all! This is VERY interesting to me...I found out yesterday that blood work levels show that I am at the begging of Peri menopause..(I am 40) after being on 3 rounds of doctor hormone...He wants me to do another round of them..I am NOT going to..I want to try something natural and my doc will not put me on anything like that..My nutritionst told me to start using Progesterone cream to try to help my cycle get restarted...I have not had one in 2 months now...we would really like to try to have another child. I need some help from you all here please? I am SO confused!!

TY!

I am marking my spot here so I can keep up. I also started taking progesterone cream on my own three weeks ago. I stopped yesterday. I'm trying to get my cycle regulated.

I had seriously been on my period most of the time for over a year. (three or four days a month, I would be period free.) I told two different doctors and they both like, "Hmm... probably because of your PCOS." And didn't offer to do anything about it or really seem very interested at all.

What would they have said if I had been bleeding out of my ear for the last 15 months?!

I can't even remember what first gave me the idea. But I bought a jar of the progesterone cream from GNC. I used it for a few days and my period went away. Now I've stopped after three weeks and my period should start again in a few days. (We will see.) Then, in theory, if I start the progesterone cream again on day 14 after my period starts, and use it for a couple of weeks, I should be able to keep it regular like that... I have really never had a regular cycle, though. Even when I first started (at 13) it would skip months and be weird. It's always been like that.

But a YEAR! Come on. Give a sister a break!

I'm 38, by the way.

I start Bio Identical Hormone about 2 1/2 months ago and the only thing I noticed is my heart isn't beating irregular. She gave me DHEA, Estradiol, progesterone and .25 gr thyroid. I still feel tired, depressed forget about sex that left a long time ago. Haven't sleep through the night in years about 3-4 hrs a night - I'm pooped. My testerone was in normal range but the thyroid was off a little. My hormones are compounded and mail to me from TN for about 100. for 3 months supply even though there is a compounding pharmacy not too farm from here. I go for another blood test in about 4 weeks. Don't know if I want to continue or find another doctor.

good information - thanks

It takes a bit of time for everything to kick in, that said, I go with finding a new doctor because you should be getting some kind of relief.

I went through 2 doctors before getting a good one.

I get a testosterone pellet inserted in my hip about every 3 months or so.

This is my doctor: Bioidentical Hormone Balance, Hormone Balance, Balance, Hormones, Breast Cancer, Natural Hormones and there is a section on there that explains the pellets and their use. I love 'em!

Thanks Locarb4me!!

The way it was explained to me was that after my hormonal situation is determined ( via blood work) then the required hormones formulated specifically for me will be inserted ( side or upper buttocks) via these small pellets. I was told that i will have come back in not only for scheduled blood work but also for reinsertion about every 4-6 months...depending on several factors.....Oh and i was told the "fleshier" the insertion site, the lower the discomfort...Hmmm in my case guess I won't feel a thing..

Locarb4me,...could you please share more of what its like? Me = knows nothing..

Thanks

Well, I would guess each procedure is similar. They give you a little lidocaine injection at the site which can sting for a second or two. Then they make a little incision I think and inject the pellet. I can feel her messing around back there but no pain. Then a couple Steri-strips, a bandage over that, I hold pressure for 5 minutes and then I'm good to go.

It becomes tender later on that day, but it goes away in a couple days. It's not bad.

I find it takes a week or so to feel the effects of the hormone. I've been getting them for about a year now, and each time, my DH is all "hey, honey you feeling that pellet yet??"

My skin did get some oilier, and I did get some very minor, soft mustach-y upper lip hair. The first time I got the pellet, I even got a bit of acne but it went away after a month or two. With me, the side effects seemed to moderate as time goes on. I certainly don't mind any of them.

I think that's about all but if you have any specific questions, let me know or PM me. Good luck!

I'm glad BioIdentical HRT is getting some press, but coming from someone who's seen Dr. Platt (he practices in my town)...I wouldn't take his word all that seriously. He grossly overprescribes Progesterone cream no matter what you have, and I think its very irresponsible. Other local doctors (including my gynecologist and endo, who both practice BHRT) don't seem to care for his approach, either. He's got some great points, don't get me wrong...but the book is a pretty easy, quick read and its not really backed up by anything other than anecdotal evidence that he's written himself. He does these really horrible sponsored infomercials constantly on cable here, too...his name is everywhere. I just don't trust a doctor who finds one specific treatment and applies it to everything. Like another poster said, its got great benefits but also some downsides too. I think hormones are too delicate to just experiment with.

Well i went yesterday...

Everything went well. LOTS of paper work to fill out...They drew blood for my labs, and I go back next week for results and possible pellet insertion...
Its very $$$ , and although our insurance does pay for the physical and the initial labs...they don't pay for ANY of the treatment

...Screwy health care system... Its like having them pay for a cancer diagnosis, but no chemo...

Nonetheless, I'm glad I went and even more glad to hopefully be getting some relief soon...

Talk to your GYN about an Endometrial Ablation regarding your periods. I was having heavy periods, went on the pill to regulate them, worked for a few years then back to heavy bleeding lasting 7 days (nothing like you're experiencing) and still on the pill.

Had the ablation 4.5 years ago. Still go through the motion of PMS, but do not bleed. There is a lot of info on the web about it.
