New here... Breastfeeding and need to lose weight! Please help!

Ladies, I would like your advice.

I'm 32 yrs old, and weigh 210lbs - technically I am just about obese, according to various BMI charts I've looked at. I have 4 children and am breastfeeding the last - she's 18 months old. I plan to continue breastfeeding for another 6 months max. Every time I've gotten pregnant, I've gained about 25lbs and it's never come off. Obviously I can't do Atkins Induction/be in ketosis, but I am so fed up with the flab and have recently had problems with my ankle joints because of my excess weight. Please advise me on how to lose, little by little; the more details the better. I'm generally in favour of Atkins - it's a diet I know about, anyway.

Thanks!

I have been doing Atkins while breastfeeding my 18 month old son. I actually go on induction and go into ketosis very easily and it hasn't affected his nursing at all, though he only nurses at night and the morning. As long as your little one is eating and drinking enough on her own without the breast milk, I would give it a full blown try. If she doesn't like the taste or the ketones bother her she'll let you know. Make sure you take your vitamins though!!

Thanks for your reply, Lmakinen. I had just assumed that I couldn't go on induction while breastfeeding, but perhaps I will try it. My 18 month old has 2-3 feeds a day, first thing, bedtime and sometimes just before her midday nap, so I don't think it constitutes her main energy source. It would be great to start losing weight, and especially not to crave sweets all the time.

If anyone else has any thoughts, I'd be glad to hear them as well.

Ok. I tried going on Atkins induction, and I have been strict for a week. But unlike before, when I wasn't breastfeeding, the weight just won't shift. I've lost all of 2lb in that time, compared to 8-9lb when I last tried it. Is this because I'm older (7 yrs older) or because I'm breastfeeding, or maybe both? It's very disheartening. I'm also terribly hungry, and eating virtually no carbs hasn't changed that at all.

Well I did it last year when my son was only like 5 months old and it seemed to come of a little faster then now that he is 18 months old. So who knows. Maybe your losing inches or maybe you need to eat more if you are still hungry. I actually had my TOM come last week (first one since I had my son) and gained a couple pounds and now this week weight is just falling off, so it also could be a hormone thing.

I'm doing JUDDD. I'm a very slow loser and this is the FIRST plan I've tried nursing both of my boys that I've been able to lose anything, so I'm thrilled that I'm able to lose some while breastfeeding.

That is a copy my bf support thread from a couple of years ago. Lots of links in the first post.

Many moms, including myself do do Atkins AND go in ketosis. We had zero negative results. It actually cleared up my sons constipation and eczema!!

One of the past members (buried in one of the threads) even had an audio clip of Dr. Atkins at a conference saying it was fine.

Feel free to come join my "mommy" challenge too!
