POLL~ Most important baby furniture.. MUST HAVE PIECES
Went furniture shopping yesterday and I think I've found the crib that I want. Now all I have to do is decide which other pieces I need.
So which ones would you suggest??? Dresser? chest of drawers? Nightstands? Changing table? Hutch? Amoir? What was the best piece of furniture and what did you waste your money on? The crib I have chosen converts to toddler, then full size, so I'm wanting all the pieces to transition too. And how much is too much for crib bedding??? THe one I picked out and LOVED is $799. (It's a four piece set... crib sheet, bumpers, coverlet, and dust ruffle ) That's a $200 sheet mind you.... And is it imperative to have a rocker/glider IN the room? Or did you never use it? Thanks and feel free to throw in all your great new mother tips-of-life for me!!!

$799!!! wow!! that's a lot of monay!!!
I havn't even begun furniture shopping yet. We're waiting till christmas, going to UK and maybe finding more of a deal there. There are only two baby stores in luxembourg, the country, can you believe it? And everything's really expensive. I was thinking.. aside from the crib, i'll get those vibrating chairs for the baby to stop him/her from crying (not sure if that counts as furniture), stroller, and then a bath thingamajig. Actually I guess the things I've listed aren't even furniture, but they're big baby items. ![]() but good lord! $799!!!!!????

I know... ridiculous, I thought. So today I went to the fabric store and found a pattern and lots of swatches of fabric. I'm thinking I may tackle the bedding on my own.
But furniture... come on ladies... I know you bought your baby some furniture. Fess up! What'd ya love? What'd ya hate? |

GOOD LORD! I can't imagine spending that much on the bedroom set.. Esp. when you can't use part of it, like the comforter, bumpers, etc. I paid 100 for mine, and I thought that was alot, LOL.
For furniture, I feel the most important is the crib and a dresser. I personally like the dressing tables that you can put the changing pad on, but looks like a regular dresser. Really, thats all you "really" need. Everyone told me that the changing table doesn't last, and honestly, I have never changed a baby on one, just put a receiving blanket on the floor, and change them on the floor. I do want a glider or rocker, but its not a priority for me. What I am prepared to spend on is I really want a jogging stroller/carrier and a breast pump.

Wow, I can't imagine $799!
For me it was practicality all the way. I wanted a basic crib. If I planned to have more kids then the convertible crib might not work out best because you'll need a new crib with the next baby. I didn't want to buy 2 cribs when I could re-use the first. My son went from the crib to his "big bed"...I didn't do the toddler bed transition and now I can reuse the crib for the next babe. Chest of drawers a must for all the gowns and sleepers and whatnot. Changing table...it was used for storage on the lower shelves which was nice, but really going up to his room to change him each time wasn't happening. It's easier to throw a changing pad thing on the floor or couch or bed or whatever and change him there. So with this baby I'm not even getting the changing table out. A bookshelf I loved. I used baskets with liners to store all kinds of stuff and put the baskets on the shelves. And then you can keep books you read to the baby or other stuff there too. Like a few stuffed animals and toys. I had a rocker in his room. I didn't buy a new one, it was one I had from before. And I used it a lot on nights he just didn't want to sleep. That's it. The rest of the stuff would be nice when they are older and moving into bigger kid stages (the nightstand, the hutch). You just have to decide what your needs are with this baby and future babies, if you plan on more. For bedding...think of it this way...they are going to spit up on it and have leaky diapers. Sorry, but a $200 sheet for that??? No way. Especially since you'll need more than one sheet, so I can't imagine buying extra sheets! I found a cute gingham set that I loved for about $100 or so. And it was cute and served it's purpose and my son still sleeps with the comforter from the set. Like I said, it's all personal choice. Niccole

Thanks for your input Nicole.
I feel the same way about the changing table. THought it would be a waste of money. I really wanted to find furniture that would grow w/ this baby. I wanted to get solid pieces that would be his. I'm not sure I will have another baby and if I do, I'll want new, different stuff. I'm still having a hard time w/ the bedding. I've been to 7 different fabric stores and I just can't find anything. I'm so NOT into the cartoony stuff. I want baby blue and chocolate brown pattern, but all I'm finding is turqouis and chocolate. Which I like, but I'm thinking most of the gifts and stuff I'll receive will be the baby blue and I don't want to clash. Of course I've found 10 different bedding types that I LOVE for girls. So I just about had a crying session in Hancock's this afternoon. I'm so frustrated. |

Kaiser - Are you finding out the sex of the baby? Or maybe since you are 22 weeks you are not. I was going to suggest waiting on the fabric until after you found out, but if you aren't then I am of no help!
We didn't find out with our first. So I picked something neutral, which happened to be red and white gingham. I wasn't into the cartoony stuff either. Don't have a breakdown...just keep looking until the right something jumps out at you. Have you searched the net for chocolate and baby blue? |

Yes, we know we are having a boy.
Christee sent me a great link on Ebay that has lots of great choices. I just have a "picture" of what I want the room to look like in my head, and nothing is coming up , you know? |

Kaisergirl, my october babycenter board had a huge thread where everyone was posting pics of their nurseries, maybe it'll give you some ideas? It's 50 pages long!

I know a lot of people disagree with me but I absolutely have to have my changing table. I had an emergancy c-section with my first daughter. I can't imagine what I would have done if I had to bend and twist and manuver while recovering. After our second was born, I was already spoiled.

Kaiser - I know what you mean about "the picture" in your head. Sometimes when I go shopping I see something I like but if it doesn't kind of "call" to me then I don't buy it. It has to be the right something, ya know. I'm glad you found some bedding.

The only baby furniture I ever had was a crib. Whatever sheets you buy keep in mind that you will need several sets, diapers leak often, spitup happens, and at $799 a pop...that seems extreme!

I got my son when he was 14 months old (from Russia). I spent about $300 on the crib bedding and could have spent a lot less...but I was having a hard time not being "in control" of the adoption process so I was determined to get what I wanted as far as the nursery went...
I also LOVE my changing table. It has some drawers, shelf and a small closet...nothing too expensive, I think we got it at Target for $100. My back wouldn't have held out if I had to change him on the floor all the time! I didn't need the dresser too much until he started getting bigger...I hung all of his clothes..onsies...shirts, overhalls, etc. Now we are starting to need more room!! Good Luck...it is so exciting!! (Try to remember this time when you enter the terrible two's)

I sooo agree with soontobesexy. the best pre-baby investment I made was buying a comfy recliner. my son is 2 1/2 weeks old and we spend 90% of our time in it. he actually latches on and falls asleep better in it then in bed plus, I can nurse him to sleep, recline the chair and catch a nap too.
Funny thing about the changing table - I never would have bought one, since I didn't think I'd ever use it, but I saw a used on in the classifieds for $10 bucks, so I went ahead and got it - just replaced the pad, and it's been wonderful for storage, and I actually use it a lot more than I thought I would, especially for middle of the night changes. |
