Hey I was wondering if it was okay to low carb while you were breast feeding and if anyone had done it?

I've been on Atkins' induction since 1/14/08 and am still nursing my 20 month old son w/out any issues (aside from a now-whacky menstrual cycle, but that's another post - literally). Of course, my milk is no longer his primary staple for sustenance and maybe that makes a difference, but I don't think my supply is diminished or anything.

Just my experience. Hope that helps!

Hi,
My baby is 3 months old. I to wanted to start lowcarbing, but was hesitant because of what I heard. After some research I decided I would try it, and if it decreased milk I would stop.I'm sure that people are different. My experience is I started induction last Wed. I have lost 6lbs as of today. I am a scaleaholic (I'm working on it) I also am doing the slim in 6 (not everyday, still not getting a lot of sleep). I can tell a difference the way my pants are fitting. I loose in my legs first. It has not affected my milk, still producing a really good amount, and the baby doesn't seem to not like the milk. I am doing no lower then 20 carbs some days I may have a little more, I figure I'm breastfeeding and working out so I am burning more calories I can afford some carbs usually oatmeal or cottage cheese. I read somewhere u should wait till 2 months when ur supply is establed. typin w/ one hand forgive my grammar please.

Hi there - I'm a few weeks ahead of you, due 28-Apr. Honestly, I'm going to try to go the BF route for a year, if possible (usual cost, health reasons and I honestly think it's going to be a great motivator for me if I stay mindful that I'm eating for 2 - and that the baby eats what I eat).

I'm interested to read what people say who've been able to lose weight while BF - and how to find that right balance between getting my body back and still being "moo-cow" for baby.

On a bright note - 300 calories and up per day is worth 3# a month. 10 months and I'll be home free - I'm 191 now, hope to stay under 195 - drop to 170 after baby - and then try to lose 3# / month over a year or so. That would take me back to my low of early 2007.

So, please - anyone who did lose weight and BF - please keep sharing your stories and what you did!

Sandra

A little girl - and the whole experience of pregnancy and BF has turned me into a bit of a food nazi. I'm trying to avoid sugar and white flour now (except my foray into sugar cookies this weekend) now and will try to do the same later on.

I try to keep coffee down to one cup per day, in the morning (and wondering if when I start bottling the milk for John to feed, if I should differentiate morning vs. evening milk - so that any cup of coffee that we share is mornings only for both of us and she doesn't get morning milk at night). I'm desperately hoping that she'll sleep through the night as early as possible.

I honestly hope that the BF makes a difference in terms of her health/disease resistance, weight management for both of us (me now, her long term), and just cost savings.

I low-carbed while I breastfed. My story starts while I was breastfeeding actually! My son, who is now 9 years old!, was exclusively breastfed as a baby until he was one. He and I were passing back and forth thrush and it was very painful--my nipples were cracked and bleeding. The meds that the docs prescribed were doing nothing for either one of us. My friend had lost some weight with Atkins and I was in the middle of reading it while all this was going on and I had remembered reading the chapter on yeast. After looking at La Leche League's suggestions on how to deal with yeast and breastfeeding I decided to try low-carbing to see if it would work. Miraculously it worked! I was no longer in pain. I have been a convert ever since. I did induction, not the yeast free version and that was enough to get the yeast out of my system. I never really lost weight because I was already at my pre-pregnancy weight of 133. But I never noticed a decrease, or change, in my milk supply. Right at the time of the thrush and change in diet he was 6 months so we did add in solids to where he was not depending on me totally. Since then I have had 2 more babies (I am a SAHM to 4) and low carbed through both their pregnancies and while breastfeeding them as well. I totally believe with an earlier poster that said to try it and see how it affects you personally because we all are different. I tried low carb with the provision that if it did effect me or my babies negatively that I would stop immediately. Thankfully I never had to LOL. I have never eaten better than when pregnant--vegetables throughout the day with a salad every single day without fail. It kept me in line. If you have further ?'s you might want to PM me as I only occassionally visit here. I do have a menu that I was following that I don't mind sharing. As we have learned on these boards take this advice with a grain of salt. Some on this board would take offense to what I have written and I have been taken to task for it, even though I am just posting what I have gone through. I have been there and done that so that is why I popped in. I wanted you to have a sense that it can be done and you can have healthy babies because that is how it was with me. All 4 of my babies, thankfully, are healthy. Just wanted to let you ladies know about my experiences. Congratulations and trust your gut!!

I didn't start low carbing till dd(5) was almost 1, so I don't have experience with a newborn, but I have a good friend who is diabetic and follows a strict low carb diet, induction level, and was totally fine during her pregnancy and nursed her son till he was 3 1/2.

during this pregnancy with ds(2 months) I had high blood pressure and followed the Brewer diet (high protein and lowish carb). I haven't been doing that good now tho, still eating too much crap but am about to go back on, I need to get healthy for my kids! I don't know about induction levels, because I lack willpower, but I plan to eat mostly high protein and have the majority of my carbs come from veggies and some fruit.

I do think that the only way low carb would affect your milk supply is if you go into starvation mode. and don't forget to take baby-safe supplements!

i'm hyjacking the thread for a minute here... i'm a ding dong and can't figure out how to PM, i'd love a copy of the menu you followed if you don't mind. i'm 1mo prego now and would love to continue a slow weight loss if i can do it while eating healthy. don't want to do anything to hurt the 'sea monkey' of course and would run the plan by my doc, but i don't see how it could be bad if there's tons of veggies in there. right now i've been really sick to my stomach and pretty much am eating toast and baked potatoes as it's the only thing i can stomach. and i KNOW that can't be healthy! thanks in advance and i hope you get this!! kim

Hi Kim - I think you need to have a certain number of posts under your belt first - like 25?

I love the name Sea Monkey - we used to call our baby "tadpole" before we knew her gender.

Yeah, Kim. I am unable to PM you. Let me see if I can find the "plan" I followed. It is now bath time and I will see if I have some extra time tonight to be on the computer. I am glad I checked this thread out. I rarely look in here anymore as my baby is now 2 and no longer breastfeeding. Til later.....

This is an old post from last year. I am glad I found it. While this plan is what I followed while pregnant it can be followed at any time. The amounts are reasonable and as I state below it takes the guesswork out of what to eat. I also found my starting weight for my 3rd pregnancy that was low carb and my weight gain. I started out at 133 ended up at 157 the day of my c-section. I hope this helps some.

Here is the menu that has helped me tremendously. It was developed by a list owner on yahoogroups when her list people would complain about not losing weight while they claimed to be following "the plan". So here is a great 7 day induction plan for those who seem to be resistant to losing, hence the name turtle plan. It is great for when you don't know what to eat and while pregnant I had no idea what I wanted most nights so this was helpful. Hope it helps you. I mostly ate the meals listed and added in my own snacks when I wanted--I never needed 3 snacks a day, but you might. And with my OB I never used the word Atkins--I was scared I would get a huge rejection from him. I just told him I wasn't doing sugar, white rice, white flour...Oh and my favorite snack was to put cream cheese, SF Twist and a handful of pecans on a LC whole wheat tortilla heat it up in the micro for a few seconds and WOW! I also did do more LC whole wheat tortillas than I do while losing weight--I would make pizzas from them, wrap up my scrambled eggs and sausage or bacon and cheese. That was one indulgence I allowed while I could afford the higher carb allowance. I also exercised at least an hour a day while doing this. That also increased my carb allowance. HTH

wow dawn, thanks for all that! i'm going to print it out and run the idea by my doc. DH is completely against it of course, but if i can eat lower carb and still have the baby be healthy i'm going to give it a shot. that is if i can stomach all the protein. right now it makes me want to gag, but i'll just have to deal w/ it, i need it anyway so... anyway, thanks again! kim

Your welcome. I must admit that during the first trimester I didn't do well. I wasn't following the plan because I just couldn't stomach all that much either. For the first part of all my pregnancies I lost weight even while eating not so well. I was lucky I guess! As soon as I got to feeling better I started on this plan. Like I said it was easy and gave me a guide as to what to eat because I sure didn't feel like figuring it out. It also gave me more veggies than I ever eat so a big plus there. My advice--just do what you can when you can.
