Missed Periods

I'm new to the site, hello!

I have a question about missed periods. I have lost about 10 pounds since starting atkins. Nothing dramatic. My diet has obviously dramatically changed. However my periods have been really light the past 2 months (like 1 day with hardly any blood). Sorry if this is TMI, but I'm just wondering if this is normal for Atkins newbies.

(also, i'm positively not pregnant...)
Thanks!! : )

I re-started Atkins in Dececmber. First TOM was one week early, second was two weeks early. They were lighter as well. I think it's normal.

I agree, lots of ladies see some change in TOM once they start LCing, has something to do with the estrogen that's stored in fat ( <------obviously NOT a doctor-type-person ). Make sure you're getting enough cals/fat to keep your body healthy, cause going too low can also cause light or no menses, and that's no good. Keep an eye on things and call your doc for reassurance if there's any concern

Congrats on your 10lbs! KUTGW!

Yep! Since I've started I have a period every 3 months now. Low carb and being perimenopause are to blame.

There is a book out about low carbing that discusses how your anabolic hormones and your catabolic hormones get out of balance if your blood sugar is too high. So when you lower insulin levels, your other hormones have to balance out as well and it can take a few cycles for your body to get used to it. This book is "Life Without Bread" by Allan and Lutz.

There is another school of thought about how estrogen is easily stored in fat cells, and when you lose weight, your estrogen levels rise and that also alters your cycle. You can google that one, because I don't have a book reference.

It is my experience that my periods get heavier and my cramps get more severe when I am in ketosis or losing weight (or both!). I think I am especially sensitive to any hormone level changes. I'll make a point of asking my doctor tomorrow (reproductive endocrinologist). He ought to know.
