Pregnancy Thread - Dec. 9 - Dec 15
Well, I didn't see a new thread, so I started one.
Hope everyone had a great weekend. I did. I did not do ANYTHING at all. It was great. I have my doctor's appt on Thursday. Hopefully she will schedule me for an u/s at my next appointment (which should be around Jan 9th). I sure hope so. Skinny, not sure about your question about the sugar twin. I use Splenda. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Not much else going on now, so I guess I'll talk to y'all later! Hope everyone has a great day! Susan

HI all!
Skinny: I just wanted to let you know I posted you a reply on the older thread about maintainence. I, too, don't know a good answer for you about Sugar Twin. My personal opinion, is always, moderation is important. I would think that it really couldn't be harmful in small amounts. I know people who feel, however, that "why risk it", which I also understand. I drink small amounts of caffeine and I drink Diet drinks with aspertame, I know people who won't even do that. But for me, I've made my own educated choice. Unless your talking about cocaine, I'm a believer in small amounts won't hurt you. I try to always think about ladies who don't even know their pregnant until 4-5 months along and then don't even care and never really take care of themselves and they have healthy babies. I think most abnormalities are determined by genetics, drugs/alchochol, severe malnutrition and medications. But again, this is just my opinion. I'm feeling good and getting ready for Christmas. It's really cold here now and I hate going outside especially with a small child. It takes so much work to carry her everywhere and to get her all bundled up. I've vowed to clean up my eating for the next two weeks before Christmas. I haven't gained more, but I haven't been very good. I've been sneaking a cookie here and there, which makes me feel guilty as sin. I find it so much harder to eat well when I stay at home all day. I'm always thinking of food. When I was pregnant with Melissa, I was still working and it was easy to go the entire day without snacking. Now, I just think about my next meal and wander into the kitchen way too much. Can anyone else sympathize?

Hey Smiley!
Yeah, I am right there with you. I work all day, but on the weekends, watch out, carbs, carbs and more carbs (I've have done a tad better lately). But, unlike you, I do gain weight. VERY EASILY. Every month when I get weighed at the doctor, I vow to do better before the next time. Well, this time I did do better, until yesterday. And you know what? I managed to screw up *in one day* everything I had done for the past three weeks. UGH! So I guess when I go in Thursday, it will be another 4-5 lb gain. But on the bright side, at least I know *how* to get the weight back off post-preg and keep it off! There will be no excuses come May. And of course, in the end, no matter how fat I am, I will still have a precious little miracle! And on the other thing you were talking about: My sister used to be an OB/GYN nurse, so of course I call her about every little thing (caffiene, sugar, aspartame, etc). She told me to remember back when, say, my mom was pregnant with me. No one knew that caffiene was bad, women drank it, and they had healthy babies. So I do agree with you, using common sense, everything in moderation. Well, enough rambling for now. Ta ta. Susan |

Hey guys!!! Glad everyone is doing great! I am doing good just growing! DH felt the baby move yesterday. That was fun!
I too have not be going that great w/ the diet. I have a feeling that I will be gaining closer to 30 lbs. than the 25 I had wanted to gain. By the way, what type of WOE are you planning on following after the baby is born? I think I do better on the stricter plan but should I continue to eat tons of whole grains and fruit while b-fing? I still want to be sure my baby is getting all he needs. Thanks!

Hey Christine!
I am planning on breastfeeding also. I guess I will still do low carb, but just not go into ketosis. I still have some reading to do on that subject. I'm sure Smiley can enlighten us on that one! Susan |

Hello Ladies!
I was hoping my nausea would be improving some by now, but unfortunately, it has been worse the last week. Several moments where I dry heaved or came really close to vomiting. I am taking my "anti-nausea" vitamins, but they really don't seem to be helping. I also wouldn't say that there is a connection between the vitamins and the nausea. We are flying to NY in 2 weeks, so I really hope I feel better by then, it will be awful if I don't. As far as maintenance during pregnancy, so far I can't help, I am no where near low carb just trying to find something to eat that will agree with me. My doc told me that artificial sweetners were fine, without elaboration. I use them with moderation. I drink about 1 diet soda a day, sometimes more, most of the time less. I am trying to eat fruits and vegetables and not junk, but sometimes that just doesn't work. I even got real ginger to make tea out of (mom's suggestion) I don't think it did anything for me. I hope everyone else is feeling better than I am, my best time of day is actually between breakfast and lunch, it is all down hill from there. My poor DH is just hoping that one day I feel better. Sorry I know I must sound terribly whiny, I guess I just really can't wait to feel better.

Hello Ladies!!!
Doing okay here. The m/s is still bad but no longer throwing up as much. So, that's a nice change. I'm not sure if I can attribute that to the vitamins or not. I'm soooo not looking forward to this road trip because the motion sickness is still pretty horrible. So, I broke down and asked the doc for the actual m/s pills. She only gave me enough for the trip because the side effect is sleepiness and she didn't want to cause me to have problems taking care of my 3yr old. They did another ultra sound at my appointment today. I had a lot with DD but not as close together as they have been with this one already. Not that I'm complaining too much. LOL Everything looks good and I'm right on schedule. The main reason for doing it was because she was having trouble getting the heartbeat with the doppler and decided she wanted to make sure everything was as it should be before we left town. It was nice and in 2wks time the little one has gone from looking like a lump to actually looking like a baby. And it was moving around quite a bit which showed why the doc couldn't pin down the heartbeat. As for artificial sweeteners I grew up on diet sodas because my mom was on one diet or another. So, for the longest time regular sugar drinks were way too sweet for me. Eventually I would drink one every once in a while. Unfortunately since I've been pregnant this time around I can't stand the taste of diet sodas. LOL So, the only time I have anything with an artificial sweetener is if it has Splenda in it. Go figure!! LOL As for low carbing while nursing. I haven't decided whether or not to nurse yet but I know I will low carb during that time but just make sure to not be in actual ketosis. Well, hope everyone has a great night. I've got to run and try to relax enough to get to sleep. The morning comes early around here. Take Care!!! Dawn EDD:7/2/03

Morning everyone: Well, still not much going on here. I am feeling the baby more and more everyday so that is a highlight. On a down note I have noticed that my feet are starting to swell as the day progresses. They start out normal, but in the afternoon I have to untie my shoelaces and stuff.
Any one done pregnancy yoga? I am thinking of buying a tape and trying to do it. I am having a bit of back pain. |

Hi, everyone
. Yesterday was my first official day back on Atkins (maintenance phase). It was hard because even though I'm in the sixth month, I still have nausea and food aversions. In the morning I had cream cheese. I knew I had to start my day out with protein and fat, and it was the only thing I felt like I could get down. At lunchtime I was feeling very queasy so I had strawberries and later a few tablespoons of lentil soup. Dinner was great. I made pepper and onion pork chops and green beans, and they were delicious and helped to settle my stomach. Before bed I had blueberries and unsweetened heavy cream. Oh, I forgot! I had an Atkins bar shortly before dinner, and I had half of a Diet Rite. I, too, get nervous about artificial sweeteners. But I've decided that it is better for my baby and me to be on Atkins with limited amounts of artificial sweeteners than to be off Atkins and eating real sugar. I doubt that having a Diet Rite every day and/or eating some food that's been sweetened with Splenda or aspartame will expose my baby to a dangerous amount. If it were THAT RISKY, it would probably be A HUGE NO-NO, not something pregnant women are encouraged to weigh and decide for themselves. I'm so relieved that others here are using artificial sweeteners. I was worried you would all think I was horrible!

Hi everyone!
Not much going on here. Trying to stay off my feet as much as possible. I'm going to the doctor on Thursday to see if there is any cervical changes. Hopefully not. I'll be 34 weeks on Thursday. I get contractions when I am on my feet too long, either standing or walking. Poor DH has taken over everything around the house; cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. He's being really good about it and doesn't complain. We both want this baby to come full term and not too early so we're doing what we can to keep him inside me. Have a great day. Stephanie |

Good evening everyone!
I called the atkins center yesterday to double check and ask about doing maintenance. I didnt understand how to find the critical carb point, but the lady said that that didnt matter really because when pregnant you will gain weight anyways. So she said just add grains and more vegies with some fruit to my diet. She said spesifically to stay away from white flour and sugar. So far that is no problem for me as I am having a huge aversion to anything sweet. I am going to write down what I ate today and please let me know how im doing. Should I be eating less fat or more of something else. b: 100% whole wheat bun with 2 tbsp cream cheese water 1 mandarine orange L: Kerhai chicken(chicken fried with chillies, tomato and onion with spices)- I am having major spicy cravings. water 1 mandarine orange &1 apple I havent had dinner yet but this is what I plan on eating. D: Salad and water with one feta&spinach 100%whole wheat bread stick. water I am really emotional today like bad pms. I hate days like this, they are very disruptive and draining. I have splenda and have been using it the last few days when I need to, but really have not had much need for sweets. I have sf candy that is sitting in a bowl waiting for someone to eat it. Im not interested. thanks for the info though. maybe later on ill have the sugar cravings, but right now i only want spicy things. |

Skinny, your menu looks pretty good to me, *but* I am no expert on maintenance. I have been doing horribly. I am gaining weight at an alarming rate. My body just does not like carbs, I guess. I have a doctor's appt tomorrow and I think I'm gonna stand on the scale backwards just so I don't have to see the numbers.
But, I am gonna be writing down everything that goes in my mouth from now on. I've got to find out what I'm eating that's not good for me. Good luck and I hope you do better than me! Susan |

Hello Ladies!!!
Well, doing pretty good on this end. Just getting ready for our trip. I'm excited but starting to have the nerves about forgetting stuff. LOL No m/s so far today. So, that's been extremely nice. I'm hoping that a good sign. I start the second trimester next Wednesday so it may be time for it to let off. I HOPE I HOPE!!! LOL I've got my fingers crossed that it won't be like it was with DD. 24/7 for the whole 9 months. UGH!!! Other than that not much else going on. ldybug: I hear you about the feet swelling. By the end of my first pregnancy I had one pair of slip on shoes that I could wear. Unfortunately it's gets worse before it gets better. After delivery I could only wear mens shoes because of swelling but it does go away about a week or so later. MyCannelloni: Hope getting back on Atkins is working for you!!! stephanie_vt: Hope that you're still doing good. You hang in there and take it easy. Lots of rest breaks and such. Take Care of yourself. And try to get a little pampering in there before you little one gets here. skinny: looks like your on the right track. Good Luck!!! Okay if I've missed someone I'm sorry. I pushed enter before I was ready and it submitted my message before I was finished. LOL Unfortunately when you edit it doesn't show you the other messages like when you do it normally. UGH!!! I guess I better go for now and get some lunch. Talk again soon!!! Dawn Last edited by DarkSiren : 12-11-2002 at 06:16 AM. |

Hey all...
Skinney- >>Should I be eating less fat or more of something else. My midwife would say that you are low on protein..You need 80-120 grams a day in the last half of pregnancy and 65-80 a day in the first half. I don't know how much chicken you ate but a normal size servving would have given you about 30 grams and not alot in the other stuff you ate. I have nursed 2 while doing atkins and had no problems at all..good milk supply and usually if you are low on nutrients it will cut back your milk supply. Gotta figure that most of the U.S. nurses on sugar pops for breakfast, bologna sandwiches and fritos for lunch and Mickey D's for dinner...Atkins has GOT to be better than that! With Nick, my last baby (11 lbs 2 oz) I lost 45 lbs by my post partum check. Way cool..I finally went into maternity clothes (the latest I have ever gone into them @ 14+weeks) and I had to buy all new...My old ones were too big! I am wearing a 6 maternity and that is a definite first for me!! WhoooHooo!!

I just have a minute to say hello, but I also wanted to agree with Marye: Skinny, I think you need to eat more protein. More chicken or cottage cheese or hamburger or tuna, something. Protein is what fuels everything to make your baby grow. Its important and it really doesn't look like you are eating enough.

Morning everyone, Thursday already!
Well, not much going on pg wise. I feel the little man move quite a bit now. What a great feeling it is. I do think I may have to buy some bigger shoes this weekend. I only have one pair that are comfortable the whole time I have them on and they are mules, not that great for this new england weather! Marye, you say you lost 45 lbs, how long did it take you(I have no idea when the first post partum check is) and how much had you gained during your pg? You sound like a great inspiration! Stephanie, sounds like you have a wonderful husband! I think if I was out of commission like that then things would just pile up. My DH is not very domestic. |

Good Morning everyone! I have been a bit scarce this week....my two year old has the chicken pox!!!
Susie- I am right with you on the carb overload. For some reason, I tend to have a "free for all" on the weekends. But I will have to watch it...cuz I gain weight at the drop of a hat! Let me know if the backwards- on- the- scale approach works! cchavez- it is so exciting when hubby can feel baby move! As the mommy, you feel it all the time but when he actually gets proof that something is its own identity..it is great. One of my favorite times in pregnancy is when hubby and I "spoon" and baby kicks daddy in butt all night! 'Bout time he gets a taste of it, I say! Dawn- I can empathize with you on the nausea....mine would really just linger until the 11th-13th week, and then it would just almost become unbearable. But the nice thing was, just one day it goes away!! I realize some are sick the whole time...I feel grateful mine does end eventually. will be skinny- I agree with marye and smiley...you definintly need more protein girl! Gotta make that babe big and strong! Marye- size 6 in maternity clothes!! I am so jealous! ![]()

>>Marye- size 6 in maternity clothes!! I am so jealous!
Ummm..it took me 8 kids to do it...LOL! Practice, practice, practice! >>Marye, you say you lost 45 lbs, how long did it take you(I have no idea when the first post partum check is) and how much had you gained during your pg? That would have been at about 6-8 weeks. I had gained 45 or so and it just came off quick. Remember that over 11 pounds of that was Nick and so I lost that in a matter of hours! I have gained consistantly less with each pregnancy..I guess you do learn...With my first I went from 118 to 188.. My main goal this time is to have a smaller baby, my midwife and i both agree that the carbs are causing problems...I am not diabetic but she thinks I may be borderline so we will see how being carefully low carb makes a difference. For most people being on very low carb during pregnancy would not be good but for me it is healthier than the alternative. I have cut out all grains..I eat atkins bread, muffins and that type of thing once in awhile but mostly I am doing protein and low glycemic veggies like spinach, leaf lettuce, broccoli and such..No fruit. I used the white powdered stevia for sweetener.Gosh this is long! HAve a great day everyone! |

Marye!!! OMG!!! Size 6 Maternity!?!?! I am sooooooo jealous!
Well, the last time I checked in with everyone I had gained 15lbs between Dr appts! He was NOT pleased with me at all. So, I got my carbs under control and have been eating so much healthier and I actually lost 6lbs by the time the next visit rolled around. He asked me what I was eating and I when I told him he was quite happy. He said he'd like to see me lose about 5 more more pounds by the due date (that's 1/2lb a week). I had never heard of Dr advising anyone to LOSE weight while pregnant, but he's been my Dr for many years and seen me through LOTS of horror and a successful pregnancy so I trust him completely. I am eating a Keto Oatmeal Raisin Crunch Bar for Bfast, then some almonds for a snack, grilled chicken salads at lunch, cottage cheese for a snack then chicken and veggies with salad at dinner. For a nighttime treat I'll have a decaff coffee with vanilla extract, heavy cream and nutmeg or s/f choco syrup. On the weekends I splurge and have a big plate of atkins pancakes and s/f syrup for bfast, then I'll save 2 pancakes and make a peanut butter sandwich with s/f jelly for lunch. I tried eating small amounts of fruit in the beginning, but all they did was trigger major binges for me, so I just have to stay away for now. Well, I go back to the Dr on Wednesday the 18th, so if I'll check in at that time; if not before. Happy Holidays to all! Michelle

Morning ladies! Happy Friday the 13th!
I had my doctor's appt yesterday. We heard the heartbeat again. The heart rate was 152. Boy I could listen to that sound all day long! Since I can't feel the baby move yet, hearing the heartbeat just makes it seem *real*. I went ahead and let them take blood for the triple screen (or AFP, whatever it's called). I only had another week to get it done, because they said after 20 weeks it would be too late (I am 19 weeks today). I should know the results in about a week. She also ordered a thyroid test for me, because she said I shouldn't be cold all the time like I am. She said that she wasn't convinced that something was wrong with it, but that she just wanted to be sure. I guess it doesn't hurt to check. I also had only gained 3.5 lbs this time. I managed to get rid of 4 lbs of water weight during the two days before my appt. I really need to stay away from the sodium! This 3.5 lbs may seem like a lot to some of you, but considering I had gained 9 lbs at my last appt, believe me, 3.5 is great for me! I actually stood on the scale the right way. I just felt I needed to be brave and face the truth- LOL! But, the good news is that my u/s has been scheduled for Jan 9th. WOO HOO! I cannot wait! I have been really anxious to see my little peanut. And maybe it will cooperate so we can see what it is. (I hate calling the baby "it"). Well, I guess I've rambled enough. Have a great day everyone! Susan |

Hey Guys!!! No time to address everyone today but wanted to do a quick check in. Just finishing up some packing for the trip and figured I'd take a quick break for lunch and such. The m/s is back today but I think it's mostly nerves about the trip. I've never been away from the house for this long and I'm such a worry wort about everything that could possibly go wrong.
Anyway, otherwise doing good. DD has been pretty sick but today is finally showing some signs of doing better thank goodness. And she's being a pain which is always a good sign that she's getting better. LOL Well, gotta go get lunch going and finish up the packing. UGH!! Take Care!!! Dawn |

Hi Girls,
I shouldn't admit this, but we have gotton to be such a large group I'm having a hard time keeping everyone straight! I love it!! When I was pregnant with Melissa, I didn't have a soul to "talk" to around here, this is just awesome. Stephanie: Not long now, keep resting and "roasting" that baby of yours. Suzie: We'll be thinking of you and your blood results. Hope everything comes out positively. I can't wait for my ultrasound too. We won't find out the sex though, so we keep calling the baby "it" or "peanut". Good for you, buckling down on your weight. I've been trying to do the same. I actually find that since my appointments are 4 weeks apart, I only start eating real good about a week before my appointment. I'm seriously considering starting to post my weight here because I think it will keep me more accountable. I let it ramp up like 10 pounds right after my appointment and then get real strict and only show a 4-5 pound gain. That's still too much at this point (for me) and I just can't seem to control it very well. I admit to really struggling with this lately. My Cannelloni: We would never think of you as horrible for having some artificial sweetner. (Although I have seen some people attacked on other boards). That's just ridiculous. I'll come to your rescue... You could be doing 5000 things much worse to your body. Michelle: I'm happy to see that your doctor is supportive. That is just wonderful. Good afternoon everyone!
I dont have much to tell from here. I still havent had any blah carbs like sugar and white flour. My ms is up and down. Today is a really good day, but I am also 10 weeks today, so maybe that means the end of morning sickness. My hubby is taking it badly now. I think it has finally hit him that he is going to be a father. I have had a child before, so after the inital shock of it I am ok. He is now getting the shock after the inital being happy. He has become a bit withdrawn and this really bothers me alot. I completely understand his situation, and know the different emotions he has to go through but emotionally it hurts me. Partly i am scared because I raised my son alone for 3 yrs when his father decided he couldnt handle it. I knew that from the beginning of the pregnancy though. This Dh has always wanted to have children, but id say that as far as he is concerned the timing isnt as good for him. But it really isnt up to us. He has just disolved a partnership and is in a financial mess, this has given him alot of stress, and my being pregnant is adding to it. Has anyone else had this type of thing happen with their husbands/partners with the first child? I do know that it does happen I am just wondering how long it lasts. My guess is that when he can feel the baby it will bring him around more. Hopefully sooner. I hope this isnt too confusing to read. I am just feeling down about it right now. worrying that he will not be there for me, like the last guy was. But i know that he is completely different from the last guy and is a wonderful husband on most days. hee hee. Anyone got any advice for an emotional pragnant woman? |

I also am so glad there are so many of us here, but it is hard for me to keep up with sometimes.
Will be skinny, I don't have any experience with what you are going through, my DH seems to be really okay with this. I hope it is just a phase your DH is going through. There is never a perfect time to have children, maybe he just needs to adjust. It will be a big change in his life too. I hope that he is able to work through his feelings and be there to help you. Try not to worry too much. I am 11 weeks today, and the m/s has been getting worse. I actually threw up this morning for the first time since 6-7 weeks. I am really hoping this calms back down by next weekend. I am so not looking forward to getting on a plane feeling like this. I really want to be able to enjoy the holiday with my family as well. Hope everyone has a great weekend. |
