New Mommy Thread ~March 2007~

Well it is almost spring which will be great because then we can all get out of the house with these babies. I cant wait to be able to take her for more walks. Today is going to be a nice day so I am going to take her to the state park here. She has started trying to crawl, a little nervous about her becoming mobile. There are so many things I need to do before she becomes mobile. I hope everyone is doing ok with their little ones.

I took Alyssa for her first hike yesterday, she seemed to like it. A lot of different smells, noises and things to look at. We have a state park here with tons of trails. Her cousin was born yesterday at 6:30 am in texas, her name is Kayla Rain. I wonder how the new moms are doing Mandi, Lucky, Chrystee, and Gahebo?

Alyssa looks like such a happy baby!

I just got back from the hospital today with baby Mia!!! She is absolutely adorable. So easy to take care of!! My c-section went very smoothly. The first two days I wasn't producing enough milk and Mia was losing a lot of weight. The next day I was producing milk, but she wouldn't latch on. The midwives tried to help but putting my nipple in her mouth (that hurt like HELL). Finally I decided to go with the breast pump. I love it!! My baby gets my milk, and neither of us have to get stressed during the process. She's putting on weight fast too.

Here is a pic of her. I loove her soo much.

I adore the name Mia and think she is a beautiful baby. What nationality is your husband? I am glad you and Mia came through the c-section ok. How much did she weigh and how long was she?

I cant really tell with her eyes closed but I just love her little face. Plus baby features change so much in the first few months, Alyssa doesnt even look like the same baby I gave birth to.

I am pumping too Lucky.. He has a hard time latching on. We used a nipple shield, and that seemed to help..

So Alyssa has a 103 fever no thanks to me, I have been sick for 4 days. It is so sad to see her try to be happy but she is so miserable, she tries to smile at me and then just cries. I know how she is feeling because I feel the same way and for someone so little it has got to feel horrible. I am hoping they dont make me bring her in the dr office today, since it is viral, and just tell me how to treat her at home. Hopefully she will be back to her oldself by next monday because we are taking her to see her grandparents in Arizona.

My birth story:
It all started when I was about 37 weeks. A deer ran out and hit the side of my Jeep when I was coming home from work. No major damage, except it scared the crap out of me. The next day I called my OB and let her know what had happened. She said go straight to labor and delivery. So I went. The baby was fine, but my blood pressure was very high. So she said that she wanted me home from work laying on my sides to keep my blood pressure down. She was concerned about me developing pre-eclampsia. I never did develop it.

Then on the 14th of February, we had our 39.5 week appointment, my blood pressure was elevated at my visit. My OB decided she wanted me to go to the hospital and be monitored. Everything was fine, but she said if I didn't go into labor, she would be inducing me on the 19th. Everything was fine, and I didn't go into labor.

On the 19th, we arrived to labor and delivery at St. Mary's hospital, at 7am. I was only 1 cm dialated and not effaced at all. The nurse put in my IV drip, and started my pitocin around 9am. Nothing really happened all day. I had to lay on my sides, and the bed was so freaking uncomfortable. Around 5pm, my OB stopped in and I was still not effaced, and still only 1 cm dialated. She said she would stop my pitocin overnight, and insert cervadil into my cervix to get it to soften and ripen. So, around 8pm that night, she put in the cervadil. It was a little easier to sleep, although still uncomfortable, because the middle of the bottom of the bed comes off the bed, and there is a metal bar there, so it was constantly on my hip. Not too mention, my hips were already very sore from the baby.

The next morning, I had effaced 50%, and was still only 1 cm dialated. So, after I got breakfast, they started the pitocin up again around 9am. I started having contractions that I could feel, but they just felt like menstrual cramps, nothing I couldn't handle at all. A couple times the nurses came in and laid me all the way down and made me get on my left side, which worried me. Later that day, they rushed in, ordered me down on my right side, and then informed me that every time I would have a good contraction, the baby's heartrate would dip. They would have to rush in and flush the pitocin. They said the baby just couldn't handle the contractions, and I would probably have to get a c-section.

Around 5pm, the nurse came in and let me know that my Dr. was going to perform an emergency c-section. I was really upset about it. I was very scared to have surgery, and I had never had surgery in my life. I also didn't expect to have to go through this, even though I knew the chances of c-section were higher with inductions.

The nurse began to prep me around 7pm, and did all the things she needed to do. I went into the operating room around 8ish. Dh was very scared and worried. They began to put in my spinal block, which the anaesthesiologist tried to do FOUR times. Finally he gave me the shot and I started feeling my legs going numb. I thought I had a needle in my back like a epidural, but they told me, no, I had nothing in my back.. it was just a shot. I went numb all the way to my arms. I could feel my arms, but they were tingly. I couldn't feel anything else. It was pretty weird. It felt like when you go to the dentist and they give you novacaine, and your mouth goes numb for hours.

Then they put up the drape and let Kevin come in. He looked so worried, but so cute in his mask, hairnet and gown. He came over and smiled, and held my hand. I was feeling pretty good, and we were talking and joking, in between me being scared half to death. I couldn't feel anything, but I could hear the Doctor talking to her assistants, and could sort of "feel" tugging going on.

At 8:43pm, I saw the flurry of doctors take the baby out and put him in the warmer, took him a couple minutes to start to cry, but when he did, it was such a relief. I was crying and laughing and telling Kevin to take pictures of him. So he took a video of them rubbing Alex down and suctioning all the gunk out of his mouth and throat. They said he had a lot of fluid, and there was some meconium that he had swallowed. Also, his umbilical cord was wrapped around his feet. Then they all rushed out of the O.R. with the baby, and Kevin went with them.

My doctor finished sewing me up, then they took me to recovery. I started having the shakes, which they said was normal. They had given me some morphine and I really felt no pain at all. It took another hour and a half for the spinal to wear off. I was getting worried because I still hadn't seen my baby, except for the two minutes Kevin held him in the O.R. After my spinal wore off, then my family could come into my room.

They let me know that the baby was on oxygen, and doing ok, just had the fluid. I was so upset because I just wanted to hold my baby. I couldn't sleep all night, because I was just upset. Finally, the nurses came to get me up around 6am the next morning (the 21st, my birthday) and wheeled me into the nursery to see Alex. I stayed with him for about 2 hours holding his little hand. Then the (mean) nurse suggested I go back to my room and sleep and get rested up. They kept trying to take Alex off his oxygen, but he would de-sat into the 80's. He just couldn't keep his oxygen level up high enough, but he was fine on his O2. He was also on IV fluids. We tried breastfeeding, and he got a good latch, but he would get so stressed out any time he moved at all, that the nurses got worried, so we would have to put him down.

The next morning, Alex's pediatrician came into see us. He said he thought it would be best if we transferred Alex to Children's hospital in Washington DC. I was so devastated! Now I wouldn't even be able to see my baby until I got out of the hospital. They transported him early that afternoon. My pastor stopped by and we prayed for him.

Dh and my Mom left to follow them up to Children's and be with him. Once he was at children's and got settled in, he was good enough to come off the oxygen. That night I prayed that God would strengthen me enough so I could get discharged the next morning. When the next morning came, I felt fine enough! I showered, and got dressed all without assistance. Mom and Dh picked me up and we went on our way. It was very emotional arriving at Children's Hospital. I just wanted to see and hold my baby. He was doing so much better just being in an attentive environment. They kept the lights nice and dim in the nurseries and the babies were much more peaceful and calm. They had to start him on fluids so that they could take the IV off.

Meanwhile they did a ton of tests on him, X-rays, EKG's, ultrasounds of kidneys, fleuroscopy of his throat. They didn't find anything at all wrong with him. At first he had a heart murmur, but that went away by the day he left. He spent Thursday through Monday in the NICU at Children's hospital. They did find that he had a butterfly vertabrae, and a bridging vein over his heart, but that they caused no problems and he would be just fine.

Finally we came home Monday night on the 26th. He was 7 pounds, 8.5 ounces and 19 inches long at birth..

Thank you for the hugs jd . She is doing much better today, her fever went down yesterday to under 100 and has been that way through the night. She slept through the night which helped me sleep through the night. I needed it because I am still sick. I must say she recovers quickly, I wish mommy did. I walked in her room this morning and she was happy Alyssa again all smiles and giggles looking at her bunnies over her crib. So another day in the house. Oh well at least it is cold out.

Hey girls! We had our circumcision today! My little man did great! He only cried when they gave the numbing shot. And only for about 15 secs. He's such a trooper for all that he's been through...

How's pumping going? I"m trying to switch over to solely breastfeeding, but am having trouble because of all the visitors. And when I do get to breast feed, he still seems fidgety after and I give a bottle anyway. Hopefully we'll get it down. I have to use a nipple shield as well since he's so used to bottles. They really do help and I haven't gotten sore nips either.

my advice is to cut out the bottles completely.. and nurse him on demand as much as he wants for the next few weeks.... he will catch on... and it will get your supply up to par... pumping is no where near as efficient as baby when emptying your breast...so as far as establishing your supply it isnt the best way to do so... i am glad you are still trying to breastfeed even through all the hoopla... it does get tough those first few weeks

i plan to exclusively bf for the first two months... no pumping no bottle no nothing... yeah i will have a baby girl strapped to me at all times... but it was something i didnt have the luxury of doing with dd5 bc my doc was an idiot! i have read so much about bf'ing and her pediatrician this time is also a certified lactation consultant... so i am surrounded with bf'ing support now... its great... i hope my body responds well but even if it doesnt i know that i was educated this time and not a failure of a mother bc i couldnt breast feed my child...

im not sure why its so important to me, but it is?!?

Oh my gosh we made such progress today! I took the advice from someone on the PG and fed Mia some milk from the bottle when she was hungry, but during the feeding, when she was calmer, I put the nipple shield on and tried to breastfeed again, this time it worked!!! She stayed on both breasts for a significant amount of time and was sucking actively. In the end though, I guess maybe there was a gap in my supply and she started to cry again, so I just let her finish the bottle.

I'm so proud of us today! AND!!! It's her 10th day today and her umbilical cord fell off. Did you are and are you guys saving your cords? DH and I thought it looks gross and decided not to save it.

Today Alex latched on to breastfeed twice!! I also used the nipple shield, and it worked. The first time he went on both breasts.. then just a little while ago, he pretty much emptied the right one and did the pop off. Woot!!

I am going to try to cut the bottle for awhile. Scary, because he sleeps for 3 hours at a time at night, and then gets up, gets changed, then eats and goes right back to sleep... So, I hope he sleeps well with the breastmilk.

I bought one of those boppy pillows today. Let me tell you, it's great. I didn't want to spend the $50 at first, but the reg. pillow was just too soft and we have a hard time. Well, the boppy is the perfect height, level to your breast (at least mine) and he latched right on, with no fuss and sucked activly for 30 min. I just do one breast. Should I do both for 15 min? Selfishly, I still give him a bottle in the night, so I know he has a full belly and will sleep a little longer. I give him 80-90 cc's (about 3 oz). Right now we get up around 2 am and then again around 6 am. Tonight I"m going to try the breast exclusively. It may be a long night...but I do want to get away from the bottle, just so my milk supply stays up. It's really important to me too to breast feed. I feel like he's already at somewhat a disadvantage being prone to ear infections, colds, asthma etc with Down's... so I want to give him all the immunities and help I can.

JD~ how did you find out your daughter has CF? Did it come back on her newborn screening?? Ty had to have his redrawn the other day because the test was "inadequate for testing" I'm scared to death of CF or PKU or galatesemia or any of those that they test for. I think we can pretty much rule out sickle cell or thalesemia, but I'm still on edge waiting for those test results...

Also the pediatrician recommended glyconutrients for Ty. Anyone know anything about them?? There are documented cases of reducing the "symptoms" of Down's as far as facial features, IQ and breathing problems. I just don't know...since it' s a "nutritional supplement"

GLad the nipple shield is working for you girls!! THey are great as far as I'm concerned! I can't believe all our babies were born so close together!

i the boppy too... i had it with dd and i bought a new one for this baby... its my fave

mandi- you are spot on with the bf'ing helping ty's overall immune deficiencies... jaelyn had symptoms of cf since birth but her docs never caught it until she was 3 yrs old... long story if you want to read about it... there is a blog on my myspace page entitled jaelyns' story... its a quick synopsis of what we went thru to get her diagnosed... and i honestly believe she is as healthy as she can be with cf bc i chose to breastfeed her as long as i could... i only xclusively bf'd for one month...but did still pump till 5 or 6 months... so to me i think it made all the difference in the world... i see children with cf that look like death compared to my child... she is blessed by God for sure! you and Ty are in my prayers!

oh mandi i missed your initial question...

no it did not come back in her initial newborn screening bc it was not a mandatory test in FL until January 1, 2002. She was born 9 days before that, so therefore we spent 3 yrs in and out of psycho doctors offices trying to figure it out. Had she been born 9 days later we would have known from the get go!

Can you say lawsuit but I let it go... it is in the hands of God so I figured it all happened the way it shoulda!

I am so glad breastfeeding is working out for you girls. Isnt the boppy one of the greatest inventions?? I go no where without it. It is very comfortable even to use for bottle feeding, Alyssa is very used to being fed on it. the boppy! We are still fighting whatever it is we have, she has a baby cough I have to say baby coughs are very cute. It isnt too bad so hopefully we will both be better by monday, which is when we leave the cold behind and goto sunny, warm Arizona.

Mandi I hope all of Ty's testing goes well, I always keep him in my prayers.

Lucky I hope your mom still isnt driving you crazy.

My mom is a lot better actually. Most of the times I'm really really grateful that she's with us. She gets up and changes the baby in the middle of the night so all I need to get up for is for the feeding. Without her I would have a lot less sleep, plus she's feeding me such nutrious foods.

She and DH are working things out too. DH is making an attempt at being nicer to her and she in response is being a lot nicer too. I sure hope this lasts till she has to return to philly.

I looooooove my boppy pillow too. We didn't get to use it much at the hospital and DH was commenting that it was a waste of money, well now I can't imagine breast feeding without it.

I still have not shed a lb since mt c section 11 days ago. It's a real bummer! I've been drinking a lot of water. What the heck is going oN!

I just took my breastfeeding class on Tuesday and the instructor said to either do one breast per feeding and make sure you alternate breasts every feeding or to feed on one side for 20 minutes, then switch sides and feed until done. Then, the next time you feed you start on the breast you finished on.
