Mirena

Has anyone tried the Mirena?? I am debating on getting it. Did you get any side effects?

We are done having kids. My dh alreay got a vasectomy and I am irregular so I figured this might be nice to lighten it up or get rid of it. I know selfish but why deal with it if I don't have to.

Hi, I'm a lurker but I just had to tell you my experience on Mirena. I got the Mirena after having my second son because I was tired of trying to remember to take the pill. I wished I never had!!!! When I got the Mirena I weighed 156 after 8months my weight was 192!!!!!!!! I was heavier than I was when I gave birth to my son. There are only a few people who have gained weight from the Mirena I was one of them. It was a little painful when it was inserted but nothing to cry about. My husband is in the Military so when we moved I got it removed and that did not hurt at all. Oh by the way I never changed my eating habits but I still gained the weight, and now my hormones are sooooo messed up because of that. Please do research concerning the Mirena. This was only my experience but I know plenty of people that love it. I hope that this helps.

Cassie

Cassie,

I'm sorry to hear that you've had a bad experience with Mirena.

I had mine put in November 2005. I was almost 49 at the time, with 5 children. My gyne seemed to think Mirena was perfect for me becasue I wanted no more children and I'd never had any pelvic inflammatory diseases of any sort. I was not able to take the bcp called Yasmin anymore because my b/p was going too high. That was helping a little to control my excessive bleeding. I had also tried Prometrium for the last part of my cycles.

So, I took 3 advil 30 minutes before the visit. Insertion was not a big deal. She made sure she inserted it early in my cycle (day 6) when the tip of the cervix is still opened a bit.

I proceeded to lightly spot for the next 3 months. This was supposedly considered normal. It was annoying, but it was better than having really heavy periods. I still have periods, though no more huge clots.

I just had my first period this past cycle in which I only had to use reg tampons, no supers or extra, and no pad. But...I think my thyroid medication is (finally) stabilized. Thyroid really affects a woman's cycle.

My gyne felt bad for me in that I couldn't have been in the majority of patients that have a few cycles and then they gradually cease.

I'm under the impression that my gyne doesn't prescribe Mirena to younger women. She'd probably suggest a depo provera shot (which I would NEVER do) or a ring. I think the medical community is getting away from the patch form of birth control.

I hope this helps. Ask me anything you want about it.

Mary

I had the Mirena IUD inserted about a year and a half ago.
It was the best decision I've ever made. The insertion was not fun - but that only lasted a few minutes. My periods became very light and now my period consists of about 3 days of really light spotting. No need for a tampon.
I did not gain any weight and have had no other side effects.
I am 43 and never had children.

Mirena rules! I've had no side effects except no more periods!!! Insertion was a bit tricky for me because my uterus is tilted, but a quick shot of local anasthetic took care of that. Otherwise, I felt a bit of cramping, but nothing too bad.

I've had two coils and was able to get pregnant quickly when I had the first one removed. My periods came back within four weeks and was pregnant the next month. I love not having to even think about BC anymore; I simply cannot get pregnant. Hurray!

In the UK they regularly use Mirena whether you've had kids or not and regardless of age. It is fantastic, and the freedom from the worry about forgetting to take the bcp (which I'm famous for) is priceless.

I would definitely recommend trying it.

PS - the only thing I can't do with my Mirena is swing on the swings at the playground - the rocking motion moves it. Sorry for the TMI but just a warning!

How is that selfish? I think it's perfectly logical! We, as wives and mothers, deserve to treat ourselves well.

I said it above, but no period is fantastic!

I am really considering Mirena. My husband and I do not want to have children. My doctor has said that most women love their periods on it. I am a bit concerned about the insertion. I'm a little whimpy about it. Do you hurt for a lil while afterwards?

Another option is Paraguard. It's a 10 year IUD. It contains no hormones and is comprised of copper. My doctor has said that women have had complaints about it, but 10 years is definetely more economical. Have any of you heard anything about it?

Michaela,

I had no discomfort after insertion. I didn't feel a thing afterwards. I had previously had a uterine biopsy, so this Mirena insertion was a lot easier.

I've heard of the 10 year Paraguard iud. It has no hormones, so I don't think it will affect the flow, unless possibly increase it. Not sure.

I had no pain after the insertion. If you are worried about the insertion - your doc can give you an anesthetic (sp?)shot first. I wish I had opted for that because it was painful.
My doc told me that a lot of women on paraguard complained of heavy heavy bleeding during periods and lots of heavy spotting in between.

A regular IUD does nothing to reduce bleeding and in fact can increase it, especially at the beginning (I used one for BC for 5 years).

I had an endometrial ablation (Novasure) a year and a half ago. I went from 10 days of extremely heavy, disabling bleeding to 2-3 days of using a panty liner.

You can only have the procedure done if you are done having kids though.

I'm about to start a medical study regarding how the Mirena IUD affects heavy periods. My neighbor had the Mirena IUD and LOVES it. I hope I get the IUD. The other option is pill that has the same hormones in it. You take it as soon as your get your period and it stops it within a short amount of time.
