Pregnancy & Weight Loss - What are your thoughts?

I was curious to know if weight loss plays a part in conception. Are the chances stronger at a healthier weight?

It seriously depends on your body's inner workings. I do think it helps.
My doctor said even a 5% drop in your weight can stimulate ovulation, if you aren't ovulating.

If you are ovulating regularly, it can take a healthy, ovulating woman 8 months to conceive naturally.

Thanks for the info Chrystee! I'm preparing my body for our time. The baby deserves it.

Good for you. I am pretty big. I did lose 10 pounds before, but we did use clomid. The first try. We also went vegetarian, and I really watched what I ate. I think it all helped.

Good luck!!

clomid is a drug that stimulates ovulation.
I never had a period due to PCOS, and not ovulating.

Oh ok. I have an ovulation every month, I guess it is in timing.

Hi Godsbeloved!

My two cents...I think being at a healthy weight does improve the odds of conception. I believe I read (and/or was told by docs) that being overweight can contribute to hormone imbalances that can impede conception. Not only do you have to have the proper hormone balance to ovulate regularly, you need the right balance to get implantation and to sustain the pregnancy until it starts producing hormones on it's own. I know that estrogen is produced in body fat (or I should say in the cells of body fat), so having a large excess of "fat" could lead to an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. And any imbalance can throw off the other key hormones like FSH and LH. So I think being at a healthy weight is very important in conceiving. But with that in mind know that you can conceive when overweight...sometimes you need some medical intervention to help with restoring hormone balance, initiating ovulation, or getting progesterone supplements to sustain an early pregnancy.

Anyway, hope that helps.
Niccole

Niccole,

Thanks for the info. My main focus is to start losing the weight now, so I can have a healthier pregnancy.

tiffann4k,

ALL input is welcomed! WOW girlie, you were on the ball . I will be satified with that one bundle of joy. It's the Lord WILL, whatever he says . We already have our twin nephews that are 5 years old. We got them when they were 5 months.

I do think weight plays a part, but being fat doesn't automatically mean infertility. I weighed 330 lbs when I got pregnant with DD -- no high BP, no diabetes, no nothin. The best part was I ate ANYTHING I wanted and only gained 20 lbs, too.

That said, I'm trying to dump at least 50lbs before TTC again (towards the end of this year), and I'll definitely be low carbing and exercising the whole time too -- I just won't be in ketosis while pregnant.

I think it totally depends on the person. I have heard that losing weight can make you uber fertile. I was 252 when I got pregnant - and it happened pretty quick.
