Another nusrsing thread :)
I just got back from my sons 6 month well visit and he has only gained 3 oz since his 4 month well visit. The doc is a little concerned and wants to weigh him in 6 weeks to see where he is at then. Not till I was leaving did I think maybe doing lc is affecting him. I have been doing this since he was 3 months and he gained good at his 4 month well visit. The doc said some babies level off around this age so he said not to worry yet. My son is on solids and has regular pee and poo and is happy and healthy too. Do any of you have advice? I want him healthy and nursing him is my priority, but I do not want to give up this way of eating I Love It
I do not count carbs, fat or calories...maybe I should Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Nikki |

Hi Nikki, I'm due 2/12/07 and I hoped to get back on low carb after delivery. I never thought it could effect my breast milk! ekkk, that worries me too. Please post after your next visit and let us know what the doctor says. I'm rather courious on this now. It seems if he is peeing and pooping just fine, then it shouldn't effect him like that. But i'm not a doctor, so who knows. For sure let us know how it goes.. ok?
Thanks, Hollie |

I've gained almost 50 pounds from my pregnancy.. Which i'm at the highest ever! 205! EKKKK!!! So i'm looking forward to LC'ing soon! My goal is to loose all that weight and then reach my orginal goal which is to be 130lbs with in 8 months... LC works great for me. I've read alot about LC'ing during breast feeding, but there are so many different outcomes. My doctor said for me to try it first and then we will see how it effects Cassie (my baby girl).... You would think the calories would help her gain weight and not the carb part, but then agian I wouldn't be having ANY sugar... So confusing.. Hopefully your son will gain the "suggested" weight soon. I havn't LC'd at all during my pregnancy. I had a hard time with all day sickness. Choosing what I wanted to eat was out of the question. Especially meat, it's hard to eat it now. Doctor said after deliver I should go back to my normal eatting habits. I'm so looking forward to that day!
OK, i'll stop here otherwise I might go off the subject... :P hahaha...

I am taking Solgar supplement. I wanted a prenatal but they had to order it for me. I try to stay away from the synthetic vitamins. It is great that you have a Dr who is not anti-LC. LC works good for me too, especially now that I am serious and sticking to it. My all time high was 235
with this last pregnancy. I drop baby weight pretty fast but regained about 12 lbs when he was 3 months, that is when I got serious. It is so good to see the scale at 185, I have not been at that weight in over 3 years. We are going on our first vacation at the end of July so I would love to reach my goal of 130 by then. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy The babies are worth the weight we put on huh?Nikki |

Hi Nikole
I noticed a small decrease in my breastmilk when I started back to eating lower carbs. I made sure to keep up my fluids though and that seemed to help. I also let him nurse more frequently during the night to help build the supply back up. Congrats on your little one-he's such a cutie! |

I'm late replying but sometimes babies will decrease their rate of gain once solids are added... Babyfood is lower in calories than breastmilk (or formula).
Also, if your are wanting to moderately increase your carbs and to eat something touted to increase supply... try oatmeal (like the irish oats... not the instant sugary stuff). Anytime I've worried about supply... this has helped (don't know if it was the carbs OR the oats but it worked!). Good luck! Michele |

Hi Michele Thanks for the advice. I know now that my supply is dwindeling bc my baby sucked down a 4 oz bottle in no time. He never takes a bottle but every other month if my mom watches him. I am so upset because I feel like I am letting him down. I am going to do the oatmeal and pump after some feeding to get my supply going again. Michele how old is your baby? How long you been bfing? How many carbs do you think you get a day? Sorry for all the ?'s but I do not want to give up LC I just want to modify for better of me and Evan. Thanks s much

Nikki,
My "baby" is a toddler now (still nursing) but I ate a moderate carb diet beginning when she was ~8 weeks old. At that time I ate ~80-100 gms a day (mostly unrefined carbs... no sugar). Currently, I eat between 40-60 gms a day. Don't feel like you are letting him down... BFing isn't easy. Just, eat well, drink lots of water, and try to get enough sleep. You can also take fenugeek (herbal supplement) and drink Mother's milk tea to increase supply. Some people advocate pumping after each feed too... I never had much luck with that. I haven't had supply issues with this baby but did w/ my 2nd. AND, I was eating a carb-ful diet when nursing him so carbs doesn't necessarily = a good supply... I think that exhaustion was the main issue w/ him... Anywhoo, good luck and be good to yourself!!! Michele |

I did a modified low carb when nursing because of gestational diabetes. My doc wanted to make sure that I was under control. I got all of my carbs from low carb fruits and veggies. I didn't have an issue with milk production but did have a problem with my daughter gaining weight. She was on zyrtec syrup from about a month old and still didn't gain all that much weight. She is still a skinny kid at almost 2. My doc had told me when I was really worried (she was about 6 months old) that as long as she was meeting all of her goals on time, I shouldn't worry. She said that some kids take longer to reach weight goals. Also they go throught spurts of weight gain. She is now a beautiful 22 month old who is really smart and really healthy. All the concerns I had about her then turned out just fine. Good luck!!!!!

My son just had his 6 month check up and weighs 23 lbs. I am solely BFing and added fruits into his diet about 6 weeks ago. He probably nurses 4 times at night and on and off snacking through out the day ( hes too busy to sit down and nurse too long). I am on about 80-100g of carbs a day around 1800 cal.s and my supply is like that of a dairy cows. I drink a ton of water and de caf iced tea. I also tale calcium and a childrens vitamin (I gag on the prenatals). Alot of women will make Breast milk at the expense of their own body so even if you weren't eatting enough ect as long as you were drinking water you could be producing enough for your baby. Maybe you need to look for another factor that might be affecting it and in the mean time try and let him nurse as often as he will take the breast.
Also, if he wasn't satisfied wouldn't he be fussy? You're not failing him in anyway. You've made it alot further than other moms and given him 6 months of antibodies and proteins he other wise wouldn't have had, and that last alot long after you stop BFing. I'm not saying you should give up, just that how ever things turn out you did your best for him. |

Thanks for the reply. I am supplementing with 1 bottle between 4-6 ozs every night before bed. I now do not think my milk is being compromised. I can tell he is growing, just not as fast as my first. She was always in the 90 perc. for her age until she was about 2. I take Evan into to get weighed on the 26th so we will see how that goes. Thanks to all you ladies you have been helpful
