Perimeno Questions
Hi. I am new to board. I did Atkins several years ago and lost 20 lb and felt great. Of course, I gained it all back and then some and since have tried WW but nothing helps.
Lately, I have been experiencing many health symptoms. I am 41 years old and my migraines have increased substantially. I also have been moody and depressed. I cried all day Sunday for no apparent reason. I just feel old and blah! Other symptoms include achy joints and fuzzy memory at times. I googled it and came up with perimenopause. Made appt for gyno for next week but what to know what to ask him. Will he run blood test to check hormone levels? Also, haven't missed a TOM as of yet so read that "the pill" might help me out. I thought if I went back on low carb it would also make me feel better. I felt great when I was on low carb before and walking several times a week. I don't know why I ever stopped! Any advise on how to approach the gyno on this topic and what are the right questions to ask. Also, could it be something other than pre-meno? Also, your support in adopting this WOE is appreciated. |

Hi,
Though I'm new to "all this" myself, your symptoms could very well be hypothyroid. If you have bloodwork done, make sure they test the thyroid antibodies as well as the TSH. Mary |

Make sure they do Free T4, Free T3 (those are the actual thyroid hormones, TSH is: thyroid stimulating hormone and is really a test of the pituitary) an anti TPO antibodies (test for Hashimoto's). TSH should be around a 1 if not under, FT4 should be at least midway of it's lab range or HIGHER (and if the doc ONLY does a T4, which is Total T4 and you are on birth control...um...it will show the unbound hormone...which will 'look high enough' but not be, that's why you do a Free T4) and FT3 should be at least midway of it's range.
Gone are the days where "anywhere in range" is "good enough". If we just did tests we found on our palm pilots and decided 'anywhere in range' is good enough...we could ALL be doctors, now couldn't we? This should clear up a lot of your questions too: Thyroid tests are normal?? Are you sure? Why aren't doctors telling women that when their progesterone levels fall in perimeno it OFTEN triggers hypothyroidism? Pam
