Could be what they call a chemical pregnancy- docs don't usually consider it a pregnancy really- but just that your body started the process but the cells never attached, never really started. Sometimes your body will start to make the hormones though, and these apparently happen more and more as early tests are available. It happens a very large amount of the time. Actually most women never even know- nature was designed that way.

Could have been a real early miscarriage.
Or, possibly the baby hasn't implanted yet?

I would go with chemical pregnancy. Did you test before your AF was due? My gf recently got 2 positives, then what seemed to be a regular period. The doctor blamed a chemical pregnancy. I'm not 100% certain but it does have something to do with the cells not attaching like the pp said.

How frustrating to get your hopes up so high! I hope next month is better for you!

The part about having the doctors stumped makes me wonder why.....it's not uncommon for women to have a cycle while pregnant.... go have a blood test done and make sure.

I had my period, on and off, late and heavy, then light and spotty for 3 months before I found out for sure that I was pregnant the whole time. I had trouble during the whole pregnancy, delivered early, but it all worked out ok and the baby was born healthy.

I had a "false positive" back in my baby/mommy days. I had rather irregular periods, and so that sort of made me less likely to think I was late, but this time it was very late, had a blood test at a clinic and it was positive, and I was so happy! Started seeing the doctor every month for measuring how much everything was growing, etc. They always said they couldn't get the fetal heart tones very well with the doppler monitor and had to use the old fashioned kind. Another odd thing was that I rarely felt any kind of movement, just a wee bit when I was very still like relaxing in the bath. I asked about that and was told it was probably because I was off caffiene and was more "mellow" than during my first pregnancy. When I was supposedly about 7 months along I took a bad fall down the stair to my basement. I was hesitant to get Xrays due to concern for the baby. The doctor said my arm was in good alignment and just put on a splint. But they were worried because they couldn't get the fetal heart tones. (They had offered to do an ultrasound a few months earlier "if my insurance would cover it" back then it wasn't as common as now, and I declined.) They had me go to the hospital for ultrasound to be able to check the baby's heart. That was so shocking, and naturally the first machine didn't work. The next one did, and just before I had a "flash" in my mind that they would find nothing. No baby, no nothing, but I didn't really believe it. Until they told me there wasn't a baby, nothing. I did have a 7 months size belly that had been growing at just the right speed. I was put in the hospital while they tried to figure it out, and it took them days. Days away from my oldest child who was just 3 at the time. Turned out it was an ovarian cyst that had grown very large. And they said all the blood to the ovary was routed thru the cyst. Needless to say they operated, and I lost my right ovary.

I always wondered how the pregnancy test came out positive, and one of the doctors told me that sometimes when you are ovulating it can throw it off. Don't know for sure, but it is a strange, and difficult thing.

My DH's coworkers all thougtht I should have sued the doctor, and I was rather PO'd about him taking my money and not providing adequate service, or even an apology. But I felt it was overall my own responsibility, and I should have been more assertive when I mentioned about not feeling movement like I had with the first. They used my case to bar that doctor from the hospital, tho. I did go on to have another pregnancy and successful delivery of another wonderful daughter. I had to wait 6 months for my body to heal before trying again, and I read up on "natural birth control" and tried their method of blocking out all light from the bedroom except during ovulation to get my cycles more regular and predictable. I charted all my signs, etc. and knew exactly when she was conceived.

I hope no one else has to go thru what I did. Losing even a "false" pregnancy is very difficult.
