Birth Control and LC

Hey Guys,

I hope this is the right forum to post this on so if it's not, I'm apologizing now..

I have a question about birth control and eating LC.
I went to my Dr yesterday to ask what kind of BC would be right for me, and more importantly which would work best with my way of eating...
She wouldn't put me on the pill because I'm over 35 and I smoke, so she pretty much made me do the shot because I wasn't willing to have anything inserted ( ie:IUD, IUS.. etc)
My problem with the shot is, I've heard that a very common side effect is weight gain. When I voiced that concern to my Dr., she pretty much 'poo-pooed' it, saying that it wasn't really a concern, and I shoudn't worry about it.
My question is, Does anyone else use the shot as a form of BC, and if so, have you noticed it slowing down your weight loss.. or even worse counter acting it so you don't lose at all or possibly gain?
Can anyone tell me what form of BC works best, as far as not hurting your weight loss efforts??

I did decide to have her give me the shot yesterday, on the condition that if I gain with it, or if it stalls me in any way I would insist on another form.

Help?? Suggestions??
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Your doctor is nuts - the majority of women on Depo Provera (including myself) gain weight. I have gained about 20 pounds over the past 2 years while being on depo.

I am switching birth control methods in October - I'm switching to the Nuvaring which seems to be very convenient and many people I have talked to think it's great!

I would be very cautious about going on depo if you are concerned about gaining weight. Of course, if you work hard and stay on form then you shouldn't gain any weight. But depo has definately made it harder for me to lose weight while on low carb, in fact to lose weight in general.

However, besides weight gain I have had none of the other nasty side effects some people have on depo provera.

I must admit depo is extremely convenient. Only have to remember to go to the doctor's office once every 3 months!!

But I would ask your doctor about the Nuvaring. There are definatly concerns about smoking on any kind of birth control, including depo provera. Perhaps if you commit to quit smoking you could try another form of BC.

Personally I would recommend the Nuvaring. The pill is just too easy to mess up. Remember the pill is only 98% effective IF you do everything perfectly.

But hey, I guess you could try depo for at least the first couple of times and see what happens. Just be aware that depo can greatly increase your appetite - it doesn't affect your metabolism, just your appetite.

This is a very interesting topic. I had a baby back on February 7th of this year and i don't plan to have anymore kids for awhile since I am a single Mom. I just got an I.U.D Minerva two months ago and was wondering if it affects weight loss on LC. I don't know if it was having the baby or the iud that has made my weight loss not much of a success

I love the shot!

Ok i got the shot over a month ago... I don't see any difference in weight changes with the shot.. the shot doesn't make us gain weight.. it might increase your hunger, but it can't just put the weight on by itself. I bought me some green tea pills and doing whatever else I can to counter any extra hunger I would have on the shot... But I have two children under the age of 2 so the shot was my best way of not getting pregnant anytime soon and that out weighs any weight gain... To me even if I did its worth it... we just have to try harder not to gain it.. and thats why I started the LC to help with this... So I think the shot is very worth it and I plan on having it for years to come... you just have to choose whats best for you... No one can say other wise really.. I just wish you luck and hope you find what works for you! if you want to know anymore about the way the shot works for me just email me...

You're absolutely right, everybody has to do what is best for them. However, the stats clearly show that the majority of women on depo gain weight - the stats are much higher for depo than for regular pills, etc.

Therefore, regardless of the mechanism, women do tend to gain weight on the shot. And when you DO gain weight, it's much more difficult to loose it. Not to mention any hormone therapy can cause low carb not to work!!

Oh, and I didn't start gaining weight until after about my third injection (6 months after starting). Weight gain doesn't happen immediately, but it does start after you've been on the shot awhile.

I think the weight gain can be controlled. The only way you gain weight is to eat the foods you shouldn't.. This is why I'm doing LC and started walking... I drink lots more tea anytime I feel the need to eat when I shouldn't.... I think its sooo worth the shot and yes I say this b/c I have two small children... And to tell you the truth I don't feel more hunger then normal.. I've always been hungry... so can't tell any difference.. I think the ones it bothers alot are the people that don't have problems with weight or hunger pains... they seem to notice a lot more!
