Need advice

Well .. I went to the DR for my TOM problms, and she put me on Prometrium(progesterone). Anyone know if this is safe, and will it affect my loss? I have to be on it for 10 days. ANT input will be great.

Thanks,
Joy

Does that make you gain weight? If so don't worry - you'll just be on it for 10 days. Is progesterone to regulate your periods? When I had my hysterectomy I went on nothing as I have a history of blood clots. That's why I now have a few chin hairs ...... grrrr. Too much testosterone(sp?)..... tee hee.

I dont know how you will do on them, I think everybody is different, but my own experience after having a partial historectomy(spell?)Dr put me on hormones and I did gain. I refuse to take them now. But like i said everybody is different try it and see what your body does.

I never did go on hormones - refused, plus the doctor said with blood clot history - not a good idea. He told me to definitely do weight-bearing exercises after the hysterectomy (walking, weights, etc.)

Good for YOU and your doctor. When we talk about HRT, there are two kinds. The type in the media that is blasted for causing cancer, etc. are synthetics...most made in a test tube (progeSTINS) and some for menopause that are made from conjugated estrogens (meaning HORSE URINE=Premarin-pregnant mare's urine). These are the types that are synthetic and not good for you.

What YOU are taking (prometrium) is wonderful for that is bioidentical progesterone, the same type that your body would make if it could. Estradiol and estriol and estrone are the three types of estrogen a human body makes and is also available as bioidentical HRT. I surveyed doctor (GYN's, and MD's, and DO's) in my state (Indiana) and found that only FIVE out of thousands of doctors knew the difference....meaning their patients weren't informed of THEIR choices either.

So, when someone says "That HRT stuff causes cancer and I just suffered through a horrible menopause" they haven't done their research. But that's ok...cuz that's what I do...research endocrine system and hormones and such.

Chin hairs and such after hysterectomy is because of too little estrogen, there's no ovaries to MAKE testosterone (or estradiol, or progesterone).

Any weight gained with prometrium for that little length of time will be water weight (not actual fat gained)...unless you change what you're eating and eat MORE. You will see sodium just pack the water on and hold it when you're taking prometrium.

Many perimeno women take prometrium (compounded, transdermal cream, NOT oral) for half the month to help with their cycle, etc. and some actually LOSE weight (if they've gained weight from lack of progesterone.

It's all about balance of hormones. If you have balance in thyroid, estrogens and progesterone/testosterone hormones, than you're body runs like a well oiled piece of machinery.

Sorry to threadjack, but Pam - my doctor has me on Estratest HS - the lowest dose. I don't have a clue if it's safe or not but I feel much better on it. What are your thoughts?

I would never take it. Synthetic testosterone in it. I use a compounded testosterone.

I used bioidentical compounded HRT.

So glad I ran across this thread! Presently, I am taking progesterone because Ive had a period for one month, won't go away. Heavy at times. It helps, but it just won't go away. So, I am 50 and I guess headed into menopause. What is usually done for problems like this? Is hysterectomy the only answer? Any advice? I have to go to the gyn on friday for an endometrial biopsy, but can't have the biopsy if the bleeding doesn't stop.

I stopped having my period when I was 43 - had hot flashes like crazy, but my DH said I was not emotional at all. That's a good thing. I would go for the longest time with no period and then when I would fly - I would have it for about 1 or 2 days (cabin pressure). Isn't that strange? Eventually it stopped all together. I also had a large fibroid tumor (non-malignant) - and the only reason I had the hysterectomy is because my stomach area was as big as a bowling ball - plus the doc said it had to come out. It was in the cervix and quite large - like a grapefruit size tumor.

Before the hysterectomy I had some D&C's - didn't help. I was 53 years old when I had the hysterectomy. That sure was an experience. Oh yes - it was a total H. The only good thing about that surgery was I got 6 weeks off from work.... After the surgery - was not put on hormones - he told me to just do weight bearing exercises.... Too many side-effects from the hormones - plus they can cause blood clots..... no thanks.

I can't tell if you (exactly 150) and (ixtapacheryl) are talking about bioidentical HRT or you are talking about horse urine synthetic HRT. I imagine you, cheryl are talking about synthetics (in the news as causing cancer...and blood clots,) cuz bioidentical hormones aren't all that 'scary'. If they were...you'd not be alive because they are the SAME hormones your BODY made/makes.

exactly 150, progeSTINS are not good (your rx. will either say prometrium/progesterone, or it will be synthetic and CAUSES bleeding, they give it to bring ON a bleed).

I just had a RADICAL hysterectomy on April 1st for ovarian cancer. We KNOW what my cancer was from, pretty much (I had taken injections to try and save my lungs and bring my allergy factor down, and it causes cancer, but I have HIE and it was a gamble I had to take in order to live a bit longer). It wasn't all that bad a surgery, actually, I was up and walking around six HOURS afterwards, and went home two mornings after surgery.

I was back to lifting weights (not heavy, mind you, lol) in three weeks.

I was post meno from having Hashimoto's hypothyroidism (this happens frequently...Hashi's will kill the ovaries and I was post meno at 41 with bio identical hormones from 45 to 51 (now) and now just off the BHRT without so much as a little hot flash! WOOHOO). I COULD go back on the bioidentical HRT (Yes, it's THAT safe) but I like the 'rule' of being on for five, six years then weaning off when the meno symptoms fade/stop.
