I'm sure it's different for everyone but Ortho Tricyclen Lo was so awful for me. I broke out and my skin has always been flawless. My periods were irregular. I had absolutely no sex drive. When I went in to switch pills my gyno told me that she gets the most complaints about this pill and I have since found out that some won't even prescribe it. I switched to regular Ortho Tricyclen and things have been great. I gained but that was my own fault. I wasn't eating on plan for awhile.

Do you have to take pills or could you do something like an IUD?

That's how 50 year old women get pregnant! I'm 51 and still have a period once in a while!

I used to use Ortho Tri-cyclen too. I didn't gain and had very few side effects. It worked well too. Dh has been "fixed" so we don't have that worry now. At least I hope not! I've heard stories...

Sorry for the vagueness of my thought, SuzieQ. I guess I just meant that not needing birth control any more may be a little farther away than you think. Lots of women my age hit menopause, think they are all finished, then get a little surprise. The process can take a while sometimes. Sorry for the thread jack.

Anyway, now I'm humming Credence Clearwater!

I take seasonale. Its the kind that you take for 3 months and then have a period. I have endometriosis really bad and my last doctor had me stay on it for a year at a time and only have a period once a year - that was awesome! Especially because I didn't have to go through periods - mine are extremely painful - different pain than a normal period and I take vicodin for them. The seasonale does seem to affect my sex drive though...that really sucks.

I know you said you didn't want an IUD, but I'd strongly urge you to look into one. It isn't systemic hormones so it won't mess with your weight. Most insurance pays for it and it is cheaper that way. You can get it taken out at any time.

NuvaRing is the BEST thing on the market, take it from a girl who had morning sickness EVERY DAY with the pill. Ugh, I hated that! Now with the ring i have NO problems and I dont have to worry about forgetting anything, in and out once a month, no problem. And it also does not cause problems at all for my husband and I in the sex department. Many people worry that it would be uncomfortable, but I dont find it to be at all. I just love it!

I've used Alesse, Yasmin, Mercette... (really most of the low-dose pills). I don't remember having any issues with Alesse, but Mercette was my fave. It may not be for you, but I get cycle-related migraines and it really helped in that dept. As far as side effects, non of the low-dose caused me any trouble, but in the sex drive dept... Let's just say, DH is loving that I'm not on BCP anymore

Another good resource, if you're interested, is a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility. It teaches you how to interpret your cycle in order to avoid (or encourage - depending on the person's needs) PG w/o meds or invasive products like IUDs.

Your gyno should be able to help you out with your decision, too!

HTHs!

I've been on Depo Provera for about 9 years. One shot every three months. No period. It's amazing. I've had no side effects... except that my hair and nails grow faster than they did before.

Talk to your OBGYN. She/He should be able to help guide you in making the best choice for your lifestyle.

Good luck!

I apologize in advance if this is a threadjack, but I have read that hormones can play a big role in the formation of stretch marks, (one reason they often show up at puberty and pregnancy) and that bc pills, and Depo Provera, in particular, can contribute to that. Any input or experience with that, anyone?

I've tried Depo, Ortho Tricyclen....just about everything out there. No medications work for me. I bought and studied a book about my reproductive system and I know my bodies fertility cues now and I just avoid, or he takes other precautions, around my fertile time of the month (which is actually only a 48-72 hour window, did ya know?). Anyway, I don't know if I'm allowed to post the book or the sister website that has a message board to accompany and answer questions, but if you want to PM me, or if I'm allowed to post that info here, let me know.

I gained 70 lbs on the pill, and it was only after I stopped taking the medications was I able to get it all off, even with watching what I ate.

I can't imagine how depo could contribute to stretch marks, but I'm no doctor. I have no stretch marks, other than a few around my chest where I formed rapidly as a young teen (course that was long before depo was introduced).
