Pregnancy question...
I just received wonderful news that DH and I are expecting. This will be our second, but this time I'm going to avoid sugar and refined starches. What I wanted to know is that since I'm going to have go into maintenance, how many servings/grams of whole grains should I be consuming. I was reading that doctors generally recommend 6-11 servings.

Maintenance is different for everyone.
I ate high carb my entire pregnancy but if I was going to do it again I'd eat unlimited vegetables and fruits and have some servings of oatmeal, wild rice, whole grain pasta..... |

Way too much time on my hands!

For my last pregnancy I had 2 servings of grains a day, 4 servings of fruit, 4-6 servings of veggies, skim milk, lf yogurt and lean meats. I gained 19 pounds and was down 24 at my 6 week post partum.

I've definitely been leaning towards unlimited low glycemic veggies. It's really the whole grains and fruit I'm not too sure about. Right now I eat whole grains on occasion...maybe once a week (if that) and fruit I've been sticking to a cup of strawberries (or any other kind of berry) 2-3 times a week with some heavy whipping cream and a packet of splenda. I really want to make sure I don't eat the way I did my last pregnancy which was high sugar. And something else I was wondering if it's better to go organic. I appreciate any and all input I receive.

First, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! And good for you for wanting to keep your weight in check during your pregnancy. I ate WHATEVER I wanted during my pregnancy - lots of junk. I gained 55 lbs.!!!!! BUT I lost it ALL by the time my baby was 3 MONTHS old!
I felt like a whale by the end of my pregnancy. Even though I lost the weight quickly, if I ever get pregnant again I would stay away from the refined carbs and just eat healthy. No strict dieting or counting calories or carbs. I'd say enjoy your pregnancy. The weight will come off afterwards when you start dieting again.

I just had my baby on the 4th of this month and now actually weigh 5 lbs less than before I got pregnant. I ended up developing gestational diabetes so had to stop eating all sugar. I did eat oatmeal every morning, but that was all the grains I had. My doctor told me to follow Atkins and I would be fine. The couple of times I strayed I felt so sick that it was easy to start again. My baby is perfectly healthy (8 lbs 4 oz) except for a congenital heart defect that has nothing to do with diet. When people say they have to eat more whole grains for a healthy pregnancy I always wonder why. You get all the vitamins and minerals you need from fruits, veggies, nuts, eggs, and meat.
Congratulations on your baby! This really is a wonderful time (especially once you get past any morning sickness).

Thanks for all the info! My due date is Dec 27th and we're reallly excited!! It just made me wonder how much whole grains I really need to be eating. I'm eating mostly non-starchy vegetables along with eggs, chicken, seafood, pork, beef, yogurt, nuts, butter, cream, olive oil, as well as a little fruit (mostly strawberries), and an occasional serving of whole grains (I'm just not craving it). I find that I end up filling myself up on the foods I really like that there's just not enough room (or at least 6 servings worth) of whole grains. I am taking a prenatal vitamin so I don't see how I could be depriving myself of vitamins either and I feel good...no morning sickness thankfully. But once again thanks for all the advice and words of encouragement.
