Cardio, The Pill & Exhaustion (blurb)
Self magazine, August 2003:
"Cardio & Contraceptives -- Do you get pooped out on the Pill? A recent study from the University of California at Berkley followed active women before and after four months on oral contraceptives. In that time, they showed a lower peak exercise capacity, possibly due to a Pill-related dip in their muscles' ability to use glycogen (stored carbs) for fuel, says study author Gretchen Casazza, PhD. If you're starting the Pill, eat a balanced diet with plenty of carbs to restore energy used in workouts." ***** I don't exercise or take the Pill, but I'm posting for those who do. Note that the participants weren't necessarily doing low-carb and using ketones for energy. However, maybe this applies to LCers who eat higher carbs at non-ketosis levels? |
