Just come right out and tell your dr. your concerns and the reasons why you think you have it. He will then be able to discuss your options. There really isin't a whole lot that can be done. Some people take Metformin or Glucophage to help regulate insulin levels. This is still new - not a lot of studies on it for pcos.
About getting pregnant...it depends on you and your body. I have a friend who has pcos and has 2 children - never had any difficulty getting pregnant...I on the other hand think I have only ovulated about 2 times in my life...DH and I adopted in May of last year. We did do some infertility treatments with no luck and decided to go the adoption route. DH still would like to try IVF/ICSI in the future....I can't decide. Good Luck!!

I don't have PCOS, but a good friend of mine does. She has several problems stemming from it, and is on a ton of medicine for those issues. Anyway, her doctor told her she'd never get pregnant without extensive fertility treatment, and yet, she got pregnant.
It was a great surprise for she and her husband, and when she called him after a positive home test, her doctor argued that she COULDN'T possibly be pregnant. Obviously, since her son is two now, it was possible! She may require fertility treatment for her next child, but still, amazing things happen, so stay positive. ![]() |

Hi Sherry,
The best thing to do is to talk with your doctor about your concerns. There are tests that can be run to confirm a diagnosis of PCOS. If if you are diagnosed with PCOS, there are many symptoms that you may or may not have. You may never have fertility problems, etc. I was diagnosed with PCOS in '92 and some symptoms have come and gone. I will say that I do better with the symptoms when my weight is lower. I've been on medication (Metformin) for the past couple of years. As far as fertility, I am trying to conceive right now and I am having some difficulties because my cycles are not regular. When my weight was down, I had regular cycles. But even if you do have PCOS and have problems with fertility, there are several options available. I wish you the best!

Cherry,
Just came from my doc.'s office, and YES there are many things you can do...NEVER let anyone (even doctors) tell you it's impossible for you to conceive, because while it may be difficult, it's NOT impossible. I have been doing so much reading, my head is spinning....and since starting the low carb life, cycles are somewhat normal. My doctor explained it to me in simple terms, and I understand a lot more now... Today he prescribed Clomid, and I trust him. He did mention Metformin as a drug therapy to regulate your period. IF, you choose to go that route, then by all means VOICE it to your doctor, and don't let them automatically put you on birth control. Your issues are weight loss, insulin resistance, and birth control don't help/aid in anyway, other than to give you a false period with NO ovulation.... Remember, it's YOUR body...so speak YOUR mind! Good Luck sweetie! |

I tried the doctor route when I first suspected PCOS. All he did was put me on BC for 3 months to "regulate my cycles" and that did work to get me pregnant the first two times. Well, the third time wasn't a charm in my case, and it didn't work.
So, wanting to try a natural route, I researched some different options and kept coming around to an herb called vitex(chasteberry). I tried it and 3 weeks later I had my first unassisted period in years! Amazingly enough, I was pregnant with our first child the first cycle.
