Birth control or no birth control?

I am struggling decideing wether I should start the pill again. I got off of the ortho evra in Nov because of the bad reports on it. I got pregnant in Dec and had a miscarriage shortly after conception. So My periods were all messed up and I bled for a long time. Well I finally got a real TOM and I know I should get on some kind of Birth control but I am scared to gain weight. I worked so hard to get these 27 pounds off and I don't wan't to see an increase on the scale. But I will for sure see one if I end up prego. What are your thoughts. What have you BC experiences been like? Any help would be great thanks!

When I was on the pill, it stalled me. I was losing the same ten pounds month after month. Finally I just told DH he would have to strap one on if he wants to get any. Once that happened, steady loss.

I just went on it for 2 weeks and then I quit because I was moody and hanugry all the time. I did gain weight, but i think it was more to do with the fact that I was craving food all the time. It sucked.

bc pills stalled me too. And they gave me brown splotches (melasma) on my forehead and cheeks! ack! i had been diagnosed with 2 small fibroid tumors which are pretty common and was switched over to the mirena IUD to help with them and i am very happy with it. Less mood swings and I seem to be losing better. I already have 2 kids and not planning on more but wasn't ready for anything permanent so.... here I am.

Hope this helps!

I got an IUD after my second child, and I'll never go back to the pill. It's effective for 10 years, and doesn't affect your hormones.

I started lc'ing August 2004 and started the pill February 2005. I lost the majority of my weight in the first 5 months and only 18lbs last year. I don't know if the pill had anything to do with it or not. I didn't experience any increased hunger or mood swings just slow weight loss. I went off it 1 month ago so we'll see if I have an increased weight loss. I sure hope so.

I think that if you go back on the pill you will not gain weight if you stay on plan but it may slow you. Just speaking from experience.

I have been on yasmin now since august and as of today I have lost 50 pounds. I had an IUD for 3 years, it was great till it traveled inside my uterus. The doctors found it sitting next to baby#4.

Hi Niki (doin' great - 115, exciting stuff - can't wait to be in the teens myself! )

As for the Pill - went off that one month after I started LC. I'm sure others have had great results on different pills - but I gain a bit here and there. Before LC, I did not care b/c I was gaining so fast anyways from eating junk.

Not to be too personal, but did you check for the string each month?

I had an IUD and loved it. No fuss, no muss, no ongoing $$ (well, not after that visit anyway, LOL) and no hormonal stuff.

I'm really glad that you asked this question momof4! I have been having many, many problems lately and I just saw a new GYN today. His solution to the many weeks of heavy bleeding (sorry if this is TMI) is to take me off the pill and let my body "reset itself". I'm also having an ultrasound tomorrow to see if my fibroids have grown and, if they haven't changed much, he's suggesting that I go for the IUD. I've been deathly afraid to try it because I just don't see how those little suckers really keep you from getting pregnant. Anywho, any info as far as pros and cons of the IUD will be appreciated and, momof4, to answer your question: I haven't had any problems losing on the pill. It's just been during the last 3-4 months that I've gained some weight due to being bloated all the time. Other than that, I have no complaints about taking the pill and losing weight!

I can tell you my experience with the IUD, I have the "paragard" (10yr one that doesnt release any hormones) I have a period every two weeks and its extremely heavy TMI so bad I cannot leave the house during those times, there was ALOT of cramping and it honestly felt like labor contractions the first few months after insertion but now I dont have any cramping. Its supposedly more effective that tubal litigation so of all the birth control options its the best imo and I am willing to suffer during TOM.

Shelby that's what I had...heavy bleeding even on the pill. Like 14-15 days at a time... it was awful. I found out i had fibroids and was kinda scared but they reassured me and took me off the bcp and set me up with the mirena IUD because it has a small amount of hormones embedded in it to control bleeding. I don't have to check my string monthly, my Dr. did a follow up visit after a few weeks of having it to make sure it was positioned correctly in my uterus and she is going to check again in a few months. The mirena IUD lasts 5 years, the copper IUD lasts 10 (and has no hormones at all). They said if I did expel it, I would know.

As far as I know IUDs work just by taking up space in the uterus. The uterus won't allow anything else to implant (egg, etc.) while there's something in there. It is VERY rare (less that .5%) to have an egg implant with one in there but I see it happened to lvmom24!!! amazing.

I remember hearing somewhere they used to do this with animals in historic times, putting a stone or something in a camel's uterus, etc. to prevent their work animals from pregnancy. It's not a new concept at all.

I was nervous, remembering all the stories from the past, the older IUDs and their problems. The one I have is very very tiny, and it is flexible plastic. I am no longer worried now that I've learned a bit more about the new IUDs and how effective they are.

They are the most effective birth control method next to sterilization. They are definitely more effective than the bcp.

They said the mirena IUD with the hormones is the best thing for my fibroids and heavy bleeding and I have to agree.. it has been great! It might be something to ask your Dr. about if you are interested.

HTH!
and I hope you feel back to your old self soon!

OMG Bella, thanks so much for the information!! I go back to see my dock on the 27th of March and I will definitely discuss this with him. He seems all for it but, of course, I will have to do more reserch before I'm totally sold. Thanks to you I'm already more open minded about the idea than before!

Shelby! i am glad that helped... I was a bit scared too, and did some research and talked lots to my dr. But I am glad i did it. It's a great idea to do your own research! I am soo glad that I could help!

Hang in there. I know it can be rough to have hormonal changes and have to go to the dr. over and over and get ultrasounds and all that... You will get through this!

Was on the pill for over 3 years and had no trouble losing weight while on plan. Got off the pill and promptly lost 5 lbs water weight in about 1 week's time without any change in diet and have kept it off without any effort.

If you want to get away from the hormone route, springing for a Paragard IUD (copper) that lasts 10 years would be an excellent choice. It was excruciatingly painful for my insertion but I've had no kids and that makes a difference. Some women have had no pain on insertion. I the Paragard, but alas, it expelled twice (1st time after 5 weeks, 2nd time after 3 seconds) so I had to go and get my tubes tied (didnt want the hassle with Natural Fertility Awareness or cervical caps, spermicide, etc, etc.)

When I was on the pill - I lost weight very slowly.
As soon as I came off it I dropped weight like crazy.
I have been on the Mirena IUD for about a year and a half.
I had my strings cut short but I can still feel them (although it takes a bit of effort to reach them!)
I check my strings once a month just after my period. My period each month is very light. I usually have a very light flow on the first day and then just a bit of spotting for the rest of the week.
I really love it.
The only part I hated was the insertion - but it was well worth the discomfort. I will never go back on the pill.

In my experience the Pill didn't affect me at all I thought it was great. Until I went off them and my hormones went crazy. I didn't have any problems on them, it was only after I stopped them that I realized the damage they had done to my body chemistry. As soon as I stopped them I broke out in acne like I never had before in my life and after a while I discovered I was infertile. I no longer trust in the slightest any pill that messes with hormones to such an extent. You might check out a book called Garden of Fertility by Katie Singer. There is also a website of the same name.

Shelby and others, I've read several accounts of people who stopped heavy menstrual bleeding with Vitamin A (I think taken in natural form-cod liver oil-, not the precursor betacarotene). You might google a search on it. It would be inexpensive at least so might be worth a try.

I also have an IUD and I love it......do mess, periods were a lil heavy when I first got it, but the Doc says give it 4-6 months for your body to adjust, I did and it is great.....I will never go back to the pill either...

CAUTION....it you are not in a "steady" relationship the IUD can be dangerous when involving STD's....if you are not careful and end up with an STD while you have the IUD it could lead to infertility, the Doc told me this during my consultation, he said the infection can travel through the string affecting your reproductive system....
