Good Monday Morning!
Hope everyone is feeling well. Jai--I've been reading your posts and am hoping for good things. I know looking at that list of factors had to drive you nuts! lil miss--I hope you get some reassurance from the dr. I also had some spotting off and on for a couple of weeks, so on thursday, my first drs appt, they gave me a quick ultrasound. I was 8 1/2 weeks and could just see this little pulsating glob that was apparently the heart. Very reassuring. Then this little arm (or, um, leg) bud came jutting out and waved at us really quick. So cool! My girlfriend came in to run the Chicago marathon this weekend. On saturday she needed to "carb-load" so it was a day with bagels and regular-ole pasta. With eyes wide open I followed right along. It had been years since I had had either one of those things. Man, did I pay! Yesterday, I was so nauseated and I could hardly keep my eyes open. It seems that every couple of weeks I do something like that now that I'm pregnant. Never to that extent, but usually something small. Sounds strange, but it seems to keep me somewhat on plan. I certainly don't want to feel that way again! It's time for us to decide what kind of prenatal screening we'll be doing. Anyone with opinions on the chorionic villi (sp???) vs amnio? |

I had an amino with my first son (they were checking to see if his lungs were mature). Well that goes down in my books and one of the worst pregnancy experiances! I had 5 people holding me down. It was possibly the cause of one of the infections I had later.
That probably was of no help at all! Tell us what they are worried about (incase you said it and I have psaced it!).... why did you guys want to do it? |

Oh, older first-time mom. I'll be 37 next month. Not sure if that alone is reason enough....but I *think* it would be good to be prepared.

And Luna, your response was helpful. We are weighing the benefits vs risks of having any of the invasive testing done. I've read that complications can arise following these tests. You are the first person I "know" that had it done, and sure enough, it doesn't sound like it was a great experience.

kbeth, I don't personally think that your age is reason enough to do a test like that. And if you wouldn't do anything differently as a result of the info you get from the test (i.e., abort), then why worry yourself with it? I don't think the benefit outweighs the risk in this case. But, then again, I'm a total non-interventionist!

kbeth... I also do not think your age is high enough either!
Here is the simple question... would you abort if you found out something was wrong? Because if the answer is no, you are just putting yourself at risk to lose your baby early. If there is a family history of "bad" things and you know you HAVE to know and can't handle living with some of them... then get the test. Realize that sometimes the tests are not accurate. They HURT. There was a reason 5 people were holding me down. They can cause infection and/or miscarriage. They are not always 100% accurate. And you have to live with the info. For some people I think they benefit, for the majority I am not convinced. If there was a family history of some horrible things I would maybe want to know early. But if you would keep the baby to term no matter what... I don't think its worth the risk. In the end it is up to you. Don't listen to doctors who tell every lady over 35 to do it. It's your body and your baby! |

We opted to have the quad screen blood test done. IF there had been some indication of something wrong, then an ultrasound would have been the next step. If there was still a question, then we would have done an amnio.
My quad screen (ask for this, it's MUCH more accurate than the old triple screen) was just fine, so we never needed to worry about the more invasive procedures. |

We did the AFP test with my first pregnancy... I was a little uneducated about the test itself so I agreed to it. I wasn't "of age" for the amnio so I didn't have to think about that then.
This time, I refused any testing. We have no history of problems, nor did I want a needle in my abdomen. And I didn't want to rely on a blood test that is known to have inaccuracies. We knew we wouldn't abort halfway through the pregnancy. I am so glad we chose not to do any testing. Everything has worked out and I'm enjoying these last couple months. (other than being really tired...) ![]()

Question for ya'll: I have a friend that is due in January and I am due in April. Our hubbies are also friends and we all enjoy snowmobiling. Here's my question. I don't plan to snowmobile this year because I don't want to risk complications as a result of being jostled around on a snomobile. On the other hand, my friend, who will be well into her 3rd trimester, plans on snowmobiling through December. So, waddaya' think?

As for snowmobiling in your 3rd... almost every doctor will tell you NO. I guess she is more comfortable with that risk! At least it is not snowboarding! |

Oh and I must come in and say I have heard of women doing the tests and not having alot of pain... and a few docs will do a local numbing shot... I was not offered that option.
In the end they pull out a foot long needle and put it through your belly... it's hard to remain calm when that is happening and they are trying NOT to puncture the baby! It's nerve racking! |

HI ALL
I didnt have amnio with my first two, wasnt offered, but they have already started asking me abou tit this time around [now that I am "older"] My sister had it and said it wasnt bad [guess she was numbed] BUT I dont htink Iwill go for it. I PLAN on having the quad screen and IF something should pop up there and I had questions, then I will consider the amnio, otherwise, it's just nto for me. We wouldnt abort and the US will show us many other defects that we would want to know at the delivery so thats how I came to this thinking... I had MD appt on Fri, they are not concerned about the dizziness which lasted 24 hours and then quit so I guess it was a virus, anyway, did a BRIEF US and I got to see bambino again! ALl is well. I am FINALLY [in 11th week here] starting to relax and trust that this will work out... Have my regular [non hysteric] appt tomorrow and am hoping to hear heartbeat altho I know it may be too early. JohnChicken, I too will retunr to atkins post birth, trying to steer clear of sugar and white flour now but man it is hard. |

Hmmm...the quad level screening is intriguing...my midwife didn't even talk to me about it. (only triple) I'll have to do a little research. I like the idea of not doing anything invasive unless something questionable pops up. Thanks ladies for your input!
Good luck lil miss! Welcome fellow 10-week-er Johnandchicken! Checked out your pictures. You're a hot lil mama!! Are you following a maintenance-type diet during pg?Kasia--I've no real preference on the sex. Everyone around me seems to think it's a boy -- including me. I wouldn't mind having a miniature of my husband. I like him alot. (blush) I am tho, trying to give equal GIRL time to any baby fantasies I'm having just in case. I wouldn't her to feel left out.... Let's hear it for all the tiny beating hearts!!! WOOHOOO!! Last edited by kbeth : 10-12-2005 at 08:12 AM. |

hey kbeth....actually im doing nothing...when i do wanna eat its always cereal and milk...preferably captin crunch lol....i got that flu shot yesterday and i swear since then i have been feeling more queezy....i still havent even got a prenatal appt in yet and wont have one untill im 15 weeks which upsets me....thanks to medicaid...i have never been on it but with this new crappy insurance my hubby has at work we found out this labor and delivery is gonna cost well over four grand not like my last one 400...so i applied for medicaid and i got medicaid backup...which means i had to find a doctor who accepted my insurance and medicaid...and when i finally found one that accepted both..she is outta town in her home town of poland till im 15 weeks...i just hope my levels are doing ok ...im a hypothryoidsm patient and last pregnancy they had to take blood and switch my levels for levoxyl a whole lot! I guess this means alot of poking and prying in a visit to make up for lost time
well hope everyone has a good day!! ![]()

Hi All
MD appt went well but gained 7 lbs in one month! Yikes. They didnt bring it up but I DID. I am appalled. But all I can do is keep trying and see what happens. I was having LOADS of issues prior to preg with gaining excessively [altho I was still a healthy weight] my thyroid and everything checked out "ok" but something was up adn was workign on it with an MD when I got preg, so maybe it is continuing. All I can do is eat as healthy as I can and watch it and make changes. MD said I will mostlikely have some more energy sometime soon and exercise will become more routine again.. Luna-I too have 2 boys and a girl would be nice, but I am surprised to see I am not feeling REALLY strongly about it. Nice to feel that way. No worries. |

May I ask you ladies a personal question?
DH and I are set to start trying this winter/spring. I'm going to be in a good friend's wedding in June. Not that I have much control over these things, but when could I get PG and not be showing so much at their wedding that she'll feel like I'm getting too much attention. I know everyone is different, but is there a time when most women begin to show? TIA for any info you're willing to share kat |

Well thought I would jump in here.
I am currently 14 weeks due around April of 2006. We have 4 boys and this is actually our first reversal (vas) blessing. We had a reversal back in Feb and were blessed in July!!! We will be very happy with whatever sex we are given. We will also be delivering at home with a midwife. Last edited by mommiematters : 10-12-2005 at 12:57 PM. |

I am curious about something....Would you share what your diet is like?? I am tired of all the carbs but want to make sure I am getting enough for baby. I am thinking about getting my carbs from fruits and yogurt rather than other sources.

jenkat and mommiematters!!!!!!!jenkat... to be honest... everyone shows at a different rate. If you are smaller or have already had kids you may show faster. The ONLY safe way to NOT show and to NOT be puking the whole day of your friend's wedding is to NOT be pregnant at all. Period. And not the answer you wanted I am sure! If this person is truly your friend she will work around you... and if she can't I would wonder just how good of a friend she really was! Not to be rude, but I would not have cared if any of my friends were even 9 months pregnant in my wedding! My maid of honor brought her newborn. I am almost 14 weeks with my 3rd child, and I look MUCH fu |
