Iron supplement help...

Is it possible to overdose on iron? I'm pretty sure it is, but I don't know if I'm taking too much.

After my round of recent bloodwork, my doctor prescribed an iron supplement (Apo-ferrous gluconate 300mg). I'm no where near enemic, but he said my iron stores were being 'picked on'.

I suspect I was depleted in iron because I went off of birth control (the shot) in May, and had a 2 month long period. It went away for a few weeks, and now it's back with a vengeance. I mentioned this to him and he said it's probably the cause.

However, with all of the meat I eat on lowcarb (mostly lean white meat and fish) and now that I'm doing the m/e fast, I worry I might be taking in too much if I continue with these supplements, although TOM is here so it might cancel it out.

Would it be more of a concern if I eat red meat? Does red meat contain more iron or is there no difference?

Some opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Red meat IS high in iron. Did you tell him you do Atkins? I know that the Atkins vitamins are without Iron because of this... but I'm not a dr. so can't really tell ya more. =)

I'm looking into talking to my doctor some more and gathering info on different things.

I've gotten a really helpful PM that I'm going to print out as well.

Thanks
