August 2005 Mommies and Nummies Support... for "Present and Soon To Be" Nursing Moms

Hello and everyone!

Some of you may remember me from early 2003 when I ran this group. It has come back and forth over the years and alot of people still ask me to start it up again. So here we are!

I am a WAHM mom with two boys (12 & 3). I am also pregnant with baby #3 due around 4/14/05. My 3 year old is still a nurser. I am the last person on earth that I would have EVER thought would end up an extended nurser! It has been an interesting road!

Most of our early "Nummies" threads are gone now... along with a ton of great info! But there are still some left and you may browse them here:

January 2005: January 2005 Mommies and Nummies Support...for "Past/Present/And Soon To Be" Nursing

Links to a few of the old threads in 2003 & 2004: Breastfeeding... do you need info?

Here are the Nummies rules:

Every mom on here is looking for support, help and advice on breastfeeding. Every mom on here has chosen their own lowcarb path and some moms may or may not eat the way you do and some may even choose ketosis. Our goal here is NOT to flame anyone but to SUPPORT all moms in staying healthy through lowcarb living and to help them breastfeed as well as they possibly can. If you can NOT deal with varying points of thought.... LEAVE now. If you don't agree... then walk away.

If you come in negative and flame moms... you are out. If you get nasty you WILL be reported!

I look forward to meeting everyone and to seeing all the "old" moms!

I'm so glad you decided to start this group back up!! Hopefully in a couple more trimesters I can be a participant! Until then do you have any good book/website reccomendations? I probably, unfortunately, won't have a very good support system so I'm looking to be armed with as much knowledge as possible beforehand!

Cool... good to see you here!

In the end if you can at least just get a couple weeks of bf'ing in for the antibodies... you will still be ahead fo the game!

Still here. Still low-carbing. Still nursing. Dom will be 2 in 2 weeks! Only nursing 1-2x a day and skipping days here and there.

So glad to see some new faces! Do all your reading now and then just trust the system. Get help early if you need it. Yes, it's natural, but that doesn't mean it's always easy. But it's very worth it. :-)

Glad to see this thread again... I remember seeing it before I was pregnant and I'm glad I can join it now ~smiles~ Kayden is 8 weeks old (my time flies!) and I'm struggling to be able to BF... had unknown latch problems that caused my supply to be VERY low... now I'm having to supplement so she'll gain weight and I'm working really hard to increase my supply... on a good note though, my mom gave me the money to get domperidone and it arrived today... here's hoping it really works!

Hey! I'm glad this thread is back, too!

Luna- when did you find out you were pregnant? I guess I missed it. Last I remember you were still on the TTC board. Congrats!!! Are you going to continue nursing your little one indefinitely? Is tandem nursing in your future? I always thought that would be so cool, but my children were spaced too far apart (5+ years).

Amy- I'm getting the pump in the mail to you tomorrow. I'll send you a PM with the tracking info. Let me know how the domperidone works!

Hi, everyone else that I don't know yet!

I'm contemplating extended nursing too. It kind of wigged me out at first. But now that my "little man" is about the size of a toddler now, it's not that much more of a stretch to invision him walking up to me to nurse! I thought my husband would be totally against it, but yesterday I mentioned the possibility to him. All he said was, "its up to you". I guess he really does see how special it is to me.

On top of that, this week has been extra rewarding. I think that he is teething and suprisingly he hasn't fussed, pushed, pulled, bit or kicked me all week. Just a snuggly little boy. I think he is using me as comfort.

Ok, off to pump!

I found out this week but I only posted about it yesterday. I am actually hoping to not tandem nurse... I would rather not nurse him into college!

Actually the thought of nursing a toddler was tummy turning when I was younger. I could not FATHOM nursing a kid that could have full sentences with you!

But this time I was more educated about issues and got over the initial teething that I did NOT get over with my first.

And then a month went by... and another....and another....then a year... over and over. This boy loves the boobie! I even tried several times to wean if you read back through my old posts.

It was not a concious choice in any way.......... time just kept going and he was not ready. And as time went on that weird "squicky" thought went away.

In the last couple of years my thoughts and feelings have changed alot on the world. I am truly understanding how much of our culture's "issues" comes from alot of pushed views that completely destroyed how we all used to be and behave. Much like with lowcarb.

I am not granola... nor do I look like it. You would never guess. But my heart is gently sliding into that way of feeling and I am "relaxing" my views that were taught to me by people who just stayed in the box that was given to them.

I hope that made sense!

Oh would you guys like to hear a funny?

I was talking to my 3 year old and explaining that the new baby would be nursing too.

He stopped and got a thoughtfull look on his face.

He then informed me that we would have to get a new mommy to nurse the baby.

I highly recommend "The Nursing Mother's Companion", by Kathleen Huggins.

Also, if you don't have a very good support system, consider hiring a post-pardom doula (heck, hire a regular one for the birth...they are awesome!). I know personally, without the great support of my husband and my MIL (who breastfed my husband), I don't know how I would have made it through those first few days.

I honestly believe that you have to focus only on three things those first few days to make nursing work: sleep, eating well, and nursing. You need extra hands to make sure you get that sleep and have good food ready and cheerleaders to root you on when you are at your wits end because your milk hasn't come in after 4 days, or the baby wants to nurse every hour round the clock, or you have trouble latching.

Oh, I forgot! You need to be determined to succeed at it. Just giving it a whirl is a recipe for disaster IMO. It is way too easy to give in to bottles and formula when your hormones are all out of wack and the baby is hungry. I recommend keeping them out of the house to keep your focus. Hope that helps!

Ames

That's one smart little boy you've got there. Shows problem-solving abilities.

When I first contemplated nursing, I knew it was good, but I swore that I'd never be one of "those" women who nursed toddlers. I figured if I made it six months, I'd have done my duty (my first goal was six weeks.) But once I hit six months, that was the "golden period" of nursing. It was easy by then and the baby was small enough that people didn't give you that look. A year flew by and when she was a year and one day, it didn't seem like it was any different than a year, so I kept going.

She nursed until she was 3.5. Did I plan it that way? No. But like a lot of other parenting plans made before having kids, it just worked out better that way.

And yes, when I walked into my first Le Leche League meeting and saw extended nursing, I was totally eeked out. But when it happened, it was the right thing for us. We gradually cut back on her nursing until when she weaned it was "when she asked and when I felt like it." It was a complete non-event and I was ready.

Domenic (my 2yo son) isn't as into it as his sister was, but he's still nursing 1-2x a day. If he weans, so be it. I'm half looking forward to it, but I know I'll miss it, so I'm not pushing it.

Discussions have also begun on whether or not to try for a third. We'll see.

HOLA GIRLIES!!! Glad to see this thread back in action Luna!!!

ENing used to weird me out until I actually met moms (only online, but still) who did it. It made it more normal for me. Then after doing research on the subject, it doesn't anymore. I don't know what I'll do with Ezra. I'm already doing better with him than with my other two. With Allison I only nursed for a week, and thought I didn't have a supply... *sigh* (If I only knew then what I know now... But anyway...) Then with Anna, I nursed her, but my supply dwindled with pumping while at work. I make plenty for baby, but the pump just doesn't do the job for me. We made it 6 months. Then she just didn't want it anymore. Ezra has only had a handful of EBM bottles, and I don't even do that anymore. I want him to nurse for his first year. The thought of actually nursing a toddler is foreign to me, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, yaknow?

AMY - Hope the Domperidone works out for you... I've heard nothing but good stuff about it.

Hi Ladies...

Oooh! This is the thread for me! I have an 8 week old and have been exclusively breastfeeding since she was born. It was very difficult at first (latching issues) but now I'm getting into it.

Diet-wise I'm just trying to avoid refined sugar for now. My weight has been going down steadily on its own so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing until that tapers off and I have to bring out the big guns.

Anyone have any thoughts on comfort sucking? DD seems to be doing it more and more lately, especially during her fussy time in the late afternoon. It's really starting to make me sore!

Looking forward to getting to know you all...

Meg

I'm so glad there is a board for BFing moms. I don't know what the "rules" are for nursing and LCing. I gained 60 lbs while pregnant and the first 35 left pretty easily. I've worked off another 6. I have a LONG way to go to get to my goal.

So, from your experiences, how many carbs do you need to eat while BFing? What foods do you avoid? And, if you exercise, has it affected your baby? Jaden (my 10 week old) threw a fit last Friday night. I think it was because I had lactic acid. It must have made my milk sour. She would suck twice, spit it out and scream! I had to give her a bottle for 3 feedings in a row. I was so engorged after that!

I'd love to hear your tricks.

I would think there are no real "rules" for bf'ing and lowcarbing. It all depends on what plan you follow. I think pretty much all plans boil down to NO white stuff..... no junk crap.... and keeping under a 100.

I am not the carb police. I am not perfect. I think we are all here because we WANT to suceed at this and stay healthy!

I have eaten anywhere between 5 carbs and 100's of carbs a day while bf'ing. I don't know if there is truly a "number" of carbs that you "need" to eat while bf'ing. I am sure we could all debate that until the cows came home! I would stick with the number that you feel best at and make some progress with.

As for exercise I have never noticed a difference.

I also never avoided any foods. That will be different with each mom... though I have heard many moms have issues with garlic and onions while nursing... but like I said to each their own.

I am not sure if lactic acid even goes into your breastmilk. It may have had zero to do with your exercising... could be something you ate or baby was feeling funny or just being picky! That would be nice if anyone can find an article on it! But I can honestly say I have never heard of that before.

Engorgement SUCKS! Express, express, express!!!!!

Woohoo nice to see you!

Avoiding refined sugars I think should be everyones first step! So good for you!

Yep some do the comfort sucking. You can try pulling her off when you feel she is doing it. Or even resort to the "dreaded" pacifier!

Some just love the boobie!

Hi, all, can I join? Jake's 3 days old now, still waiting on my milk. He makes rooty faces almost every hour or two, so we're practicing a lot. I'm not sure the latch is completely correct, I do have some small scabs on my nipples.

I've been using the L cream, and today put on the shells so they don't rub anything in between feedings. DH checked that his bottom lip is out, so hopefully things will get better. If not, we'll call an LC on Monday.

His head is so small compared to my boob, there's no way he could get even close to the whole areola in his mouth, how much is enough??

He's wetting and pooping okay so far, tomorrow we do the counts. And he seems to be acting okay, so I'm not going to worry yet.
