birth control question

Okay how does taking BC affect weight loss? I am using the Ortho Evra patch and have been for close to a year now... it is convenient, easy and a no brainer as far as I am concerned..... my concern is I am almost 39 yrs old, I have hypothyroid and I am curious as to know how I will know if I am peri-menopausal? I get pretty crabby at times... PMS probably, I mean not extreme stuff just very touchy. lots of little things that usually don't bother me.... really grate on my nerves. I have noticed that I sometimes wake in the middle of the night soaked in sweat....I don't think I get HOT flashes during the day really.... I am usually chilly.
We don't really want to have any more children and DH insurance won't cover the big "V"....... what do we do?? Is there any NON hormonal BC method out there that is as effective but will still allow us the spontaneity that we have now??

TIA (sorry so long)

Melissa- My Dr. recommends the paraguard IUD. No hormones. I really think I'm just going to have my tubes tied. I want the patch for now but my Dr. won't put anyone on it that isn't in onederland. Good luck.

Really? Why? Is it an efficacy issue? This is my second month using Ortho Evra. My doc didn't say anything about it, but the Rx was just called into the pharmacy, since she originally prescribed the pill.

My doc never said anything about being overweight and not using the patch. Been using it for awhile now.. I used to take the pill...but got tired of taking it everyday.

I will have to research the paraguard IUD....Thanks Rebecca.

Checked out the site for Paragard IUD..... seems to be very effective. Think I will discuss with my doc next time I go. Very interesting.

Thanks Rebecca for the info...

They said anyone over 200lbs might not get the full effects since is is absorbed thru the skin and might not be probably absorbed with excess fat.

oh and paraguard isn't covered by most insurances but they (paraguard) offer financing. It is like $500

FYI....there are a lot of studies that have come out in the last few months that the patch and estrogen/testosterone based birth control pills are less effective in women over 200 lbs. of weight. There is a dramatic increase in "breakthrough" pregnancies in overweight women using these methods.

My own ob/gyn would not perscribe the pill for me after the birth of my baby in Dec. stating these research findings. Either would my general practitioner when I called them. They offered the IUD and Depo.

However, 6 months later after seeing I was losing weight she did perscribe the "mini-pill" as it works very differently than standard BC pills.

wow.... I can't believe it... I have been over 200 lbs my whole life and not one of my doctors has ever mentioned that it could be less effective due to my weight!!! I have been EXTREMELY lucky I guess. I have been on the pill most of my adult life..LOL

Yet another incentive for me to hurry my a$$ to onederland!

I was switched from the mini pill to the patch when Reilly stopped nursing b/c my doc said the mini pill wouldn't be as effective without nursing,

Years ago when I was on bc pills, I took timed-release B-100 vitamins plus extra B-6, twice a day. B-6 helps regulate water weight gain and really got rid of the bloat! The B-6 does need the other B vitamins (in the B-100) to work at optimum.

I can tell you way back in the day that when I got my Norplant (12 years ago) that I gained 30 pounds in a few months, and I think that and my highrisk pregnancy and birth is what sent my body out of control and me into being on the board today.

I WAS super skinny.

Hormones are the devil in my opinion.

My dr just put me on the mini-pill and he did mention that having excess weight can cause it to be less effective. He did not want to put me on depo since he has seen it cause a lot of weight gain in his patients. That's fine with me...I didn't want it anyway.
