Bleeding between periods
Anyone have this? I'm 37, never missed a period in my life, never bled between periods until now. Nothing else has changed. Not on the pill or any other type of BC. Started period June 18, as usual. Then 15 days later, on July 2, started bleeding. Lightly, but enough to need a tampon. Today is July 11, still bleeding. Went to the gyno last week, examined me, did a vaginal ultrasound, nothing...except a follicular cyst on my left ovary that he said should take care of itself when I ovulate. Which I think I did Thursday because I had slight pain on that side. Nothing in my uterus. No cervical problem that he could see. My mother started menopause in her early 40's. However, he doesn't think that is the problem with me. Actually, he didn't give me a good explanation for the bleeding and couldn't really tell me when or if it would stop before my next period. I have an appointment with another gyn on Wednesday for a second opinion.
Anyone experienced this, or have any opinions/suggestions for what it might be?

Karen, I hope they have some answers for you soon. My best friend has a similar issue, and they ended up putting her ON birth control to regulate the bleeding.
I know sometimes with the weight loss there are "adjustment issues" with the body, including funny things happening with our cycles. Hopefully it's just one of those things and will straighten itself out quickly for you! -- Jenn |

Kaos0100,
I wonder if your Dr. would consider running the CA125 (bloodtest). My Dr. said it this way, "it can detect cancer on the 125th marker." I believe it's just for ovarian cancer, of which I have a high risk for (mom & her mom had it within 10 years of each other!). Better health to you! |

im having the same kind of problem.. never ever had it in my life.. never had any infections or anything like that to speak of.
this has been going on for about a week (on and off at first) and today its like I have AF lightly.. not normal for me since im not due for that until a week from tuesday.,.. anyhow ive lost 12 pounds in the last 13 days and started an exercise routine so im hoping its just my body being funky, but is this something I should really be concerned about? im not on BC so there's a chance I could be PG but I doubt that (whats it called, implantation? that could cause this).. I would like to wait until AF is actually due to take a test.. does anyone think I should see the Dr about this (id rather not if i dont have to)? DH is concerned.. but you know how men are about this type of thing (he knows less than I do heh) thanks for your help.. I dont want to bug my mother or sisters about this because they live far away and I dont want any unnecessary concern (or built up hopes)

How much weight have you lost? Same thing happened to me. Dr said Estrogen is stored in fat cells, when you lose weight the cells shrink and your body gets excess estrogen, thus basically screwing up your menses cycles. The excess estrogen can present symptoms of perimenopause, menopause, painful periods, heavier bleeding, cramping, heavy PMS, etc.

thanks
i lost 60 pounds last year but dont recall having this trouble.. although AF was late a few times that never concerned me..I was on maintenance from august to august of this year.. I dropped 5 pounds in july from caffeine (hadnt drank caffeine in about 7 years) and then started a meat/egg fast on 8/8.. since that time ive dropped an additional 12 pounds (in 13 days). im thinking thats what it is.. but this is annoying.. i hope it stops after a week and wont continue for a few weeks.. ive read what you posted from other people too.. i think thats what it is.. ive had cramping and been tired, usualy PMS and AF symptoms.. im 32 so I hope its just symptoms and not perimenopause hehe .. thank you for responding.. its nice to know that someone else has been where I am (not nice that you went through it of course, but the support) |

Way too much time on my hands!

I've heard that this happens to a lot of women when they are losing weight on the atkins diet. I'm not sure if it's specific to atkins, maybe it happens to people on different diets as well. I think it has something to do with the hormones in your fat cells. Sorry I'm not much help, it never happened to me.

I have had this too. I fell off the wagon (so mine has nothing to do with Atkins) and have had bleeding all through the month for the last 4 months. Did an ultra sound and Doctor says she thinks she saw a small growth on my uterus and that would be cause of the bleeding she gave me progesterone cream and that usually takes care of it as does B/C pills. This month my bleeding has stopped
I would go to a different doctor and see what he has to say about it. Good Luck!!!! Angaa |

The first time I did Atkins it completely changed the time of month that my cycle started. And now again this time as well I started a week earlier than I usually do, about four or five days into my diet when I had my first big whoosh. Other than the time of month I start everything else has been normal.

Sort of a thread jack here...
I also have cysts on my ovaries, about six or so they said at last check, and I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), and was given a BC pill and Metformin. I'm fairly certain I am also insulin resistant and therefore suffering from Syndrome X, in which case low carbing, regular exercise, and the aforementioned treatment for PCOS is the way to go for me. However, I am not currently taking BC pills and I really should get both an extended glucose tolerance test with insulin levels and a testosterone level done. I know my testosterone level is probably high because of the facial hair and acne issues I have. Also stomach fat is a symptom. There are other medications you can take for excess testosterone. And losing weight also lessens the symptoms. I plan to take care of these things when I have insurance (hopefully soon). At any rate, I just wanted to mention what could be a cause of your cysts (PCOS), because if you do have it, then you need to get it treated because it can lead to diabetes, heart disease, and put you at risk for some cancers. Okay, thread jack over. ![]()

I also have to agree with pom pom. The same thing happened to me. It was odd like you where I had been consistently losing weight and everything was normal. then when I reached about 135 I go the midcycle spotting thing. It went on for 2 months and then stopped. When I asked my gyn about it he also said that the release of hormones within fat cells while dieting will cause this.
Just another vote for this theory..but its good you went to see the dr in case. Oh I got a big whoosh after this too ![]()

Hi Mina-
I'm not the best person to advise you as I have PCOS and don't ovulate. However, whenever I've started LC I get a period or have spotting after a few weeks on the diet. Since you've been reving up your diet with a M/E fast I would put the period/spotting down to the release of estrogen from fat cells. If it keeps up for several more days you might want to have it checked out but a week or so of spotting could just be from your recent dietary changes. |
