Women Only--seeking input on lowering estrogen

I am seeking opinions here-- this is the advice on www.breastcancer.org on how to avoid recurrances--- I have too much estrogen. Limiting alchohol is easy, but they suggest a veggie diet (which of course, still exposes us to pesticides and chemicals)

Anyone here have high estrogen in their systems? Are you eating low carb?

You can minimize or eliminate sources of extra estrogen from your diet or environment with the following steps:

* Stop drinking alcohol or limit consumption to no more than two alcoholic drinks per week (cutting down on alcohol increases your liver's ability to regulate blood estrogen levels).

* Restrict red meat and other sources of animal fat (this includes dairy fat in cheese, milk, and ice cream), as they may contain stored hormones or pesticides.

* Try to stick to a relatively vegetarian diet.

* Shed any extra pounds, and try hard to keep those pounds off.

* If you have already had breast cancer, avoid taking estrogen-like products such as menopausal hormone therapy and DHEA.

* If circumstances allow, consider having children sooner rather than later in life.

Though it's not cheap, one thing that popped out at me in the list is to buy your meats from the health food store - organic. They don't use hormones on the animals or pesticides in their feeds. Once appetite suppression kicks in, you will eat much less meat so it shouldn't break the bank. Beef made from Coleman is safe. Rocky chickens are safe. I buy chicken from Costco (foster farms) because their chickens are treated EXACTLY the same as Rocky Jr. which is the non-organic chicken the health food stores sell. The price is incredibly different, however.

You can also limit your pesticide intakes in veggies by buying Organic or NutriClean (no pesticides detected) ...

I have had problems with my endocrine system over the years. At one point I was so estrogen dominant, and progesterone low that I missed a period for 4 months and was never so sick in my life. I had a scare with a test that seemed to detect cervical cancer. My cycles were frequently irregular due to hormonal upsets and I had 8 years of infertility after having our son.

Low Carb or a hypoglycemic diet is what those handful of doc's should have put me on...it almost angers me now. Once I started low carbing, my problem corrected ITSELF. I am like clockwork now. And....I have an almost 4 yr. old beautiful daughter to boot. Being estrogen high and prog. low will cause tremendous weight gain. I gained almost 50 lbs in one YEAR...and I was eating like a human being too...not chips, soda and the like. No one could figure out why I was fat...it was hormonal abnormalities.

Low Carbing seems to reset the insulin (the master hormone) and by so doing it gives progesterone a chance and estrogen takes a back seat. Some women find balancing their progesterone with natural creams to be incredible helpful and they lose the side-effects of estrogen dominance.

I'm not a woman but I do treat women with this problem.

There are many phytoestrogen compounds on the market that help greatly. The phytoestrogens, which are less strong (i.e. - cause less of a reaction by the body than our normal estrogen) "kicks" estrogen out of the cell receptor sites and takes their place there.

Also, increasing pectin helps GREATLY. This is because to rid our body of estrogen, our liver conjugates the estrogen to a protein and releases it into the colon through the bile. If you have enough pectin in your diet, the conjugated estrogen is attached to it and is carried out with the rest of the feces. If you do not have enough fiber, especially pectin, the estrogen will un-conjugate from the protein and be reabsorbed by the body.

There's a very good book out there all about this--it's cheap on Amazon, as well! What Your Dr May Not Tell You About the Menopause by Dr Lee. I've found it very helpful.

I bought some apple pectin, and then realized you may have meant another kind, like citrus. Does it matter? thanks!

Laurie, thanks for the book tip!

BUMP I'd like to know the difference as well?

EDIT: HUH! HOw bizarre is that? the inner rind & core of oranges have ALWAYS been my favorite part. Sometimes I'd eat just that & give DH the orange! I never knew it was good for you other than for vitamins & minerals.
