Menstruation after delivery.....

When did your period return and was it right back in the swing of things or did it take a while to adjust to normal?

I am 7 weeks PPD and I think I am having my first period. I am putting Hamilton to the breast, but I wouldn't say we are "nursing", so I wouldn't be surprised if the bleeding I am having is my first period.

Just curious how things were for you ladies....I realize they will vary.

TIA.

It took about 4 weeks after I quit nursing for my period to return. If he isn't nursing much, then you probably are having your period.

However, I bled for 6 weeks after Tanner was born. Are you sure it isn't just bleeding from delivery?

Dena, I thought that at about 7 weeks I had my first period. But it was not 'normal'.. pretty icky actually. Kind of like a test run, I guess. It was gooey and varied in color from yellowish-brown to red. And then I continued to have discharge until... 3 weeks later (yeah, surprised me, too) I had one that was more normal. Red but very heavy and lasted for several days. Mine are usually light and short. It was the heaviest I've ever bled except for post-delivery. And fortunately, I have not had any extra discharge since then. So, I think I'm on the right track.

ETA that I stopped nursing at 4 weeks.

GoJ- I had my after delivery flow for 6 weeks post-pardem. Didn't get my period until 10 months. I believe that you have to nurse every 4-6 hours to keep your period from returning (although, that isn't really true with all woman)...sounds like you are just one of those lucky ones that get it right away.

Yeah, call me lucky alright.

I bled for about a week PPD, it went away, then I bled for about two weeks, it went away, then spotted randomly....then nothing for about two weeks and then just started again today.

My bleeding never changed colors really. PPD bleeding was bright red the whole time. This is a darker red, and if I am not crazy, I felt like I was having PMS symptoms leading up to today.

I kind of don't want them to start, but in a way I do so I can get my cycles regular again. We are having to be careful until we can get back to the rhythm method.

Yes....I plan to make it over there. I have been lurking....I actually started dieting this week, and I am seeing a doctor about my back on Monday. My OBGYN thinks it's still part of PPD recovery, but I've been living with this pain for years and it has finally caught up with me. I'm tired of excuses! I am ready to get busy.

It varies by person...some longer, some shorter. The majority of my "heavy" bleeding was in the hospital.

When I got home, it was random. Some days nothing, some days light spotting and other days I could feel it.

I went about two weeks here at the end with nothing...now I am bleeding again. It started yesterday and I am certain it is my period.

Same here, the heavy stuff was the first few days at the hospital, then at home. For about 3 weeks after, it was still bleeding and discharge but gradually got lighter (although there were some large clots in there ). Some women can bleed for all six weeks, though.

Oh, and breastfeeding helps with contracting the uterus, which will cause lots of bleeding at first, but may make the duration shorter.

Good to know. I am hoping to breast feed. Hopefully that will help.

Also, DH doesn't believe in (ahem) intimate time while bleeding, so that will be a long time for him to wait. Although, we'll probably want to wait that long anyway, right?

Yeah, your doc/midwife will probably recommend waiting six weeks. Something about making sure everything is back to where it belongs, like the cervix and uterus.

I breastfed, but bled for six weeks. It was horrible at the hospital. I got up out of bed and my pad had shifted, I bled ALL over the floor. I mean, everywhere. It was all down my legs, and they had carpeted floors. (WHY? In the labor wing???) I had no idea to expect that much blood. I wish someone would have prepared me for it.

I'm fairly heavy during TOM. I start off heavy at first and it tapers until the end.

Do you think it had anything to do with your clotting condition?

Yep, I was one of them

I bled a full six weeks after delivery and I started my period four weeks after the lochia stopped. And I'm still nursing! I was hoing for a lonegr break. I didn't start my period at all with my first. But I had gotten on Depo provera right after she was born. I didn't do that with Elizabeth. I gained too much weight on it.

It could be, although I was completely off of my blood thinners when I delivered Tanner. I'm not sure what effect that had.
