Hot flashes, help!

NO, not me, my mom. I convinced her to start doing atkins and she started induction today. But she claims she cannot go without eating her soybeans, which are relatively high in carbs, because of how horrible her hot flash attacks are. I don't know much about this so I don't know what have her replace soybeans with. Any advice?

Get "Remifemin" (available at the drugstore) for your mom for hot flashes. This is a specially prepared black cohosh formula. I've tried plain black cohosh capsules which did nothing for hot flashes, and then I tried Remifemin, and that stuff works! They do something to it to make it longer lasting. You take two pills a day, one in the a.m. and one at night (prevents night sweats). Your mom won't need soy if she takes Remifemin.

Flax seed is also a form of estrogen....Check out the book "Estrogen: the natural way" by Nina Shandler. I find that flax seed really helps with my night sweats....don't have hot flashes that often, but I guess that flax seed would help with that too.

Good thread! I have started those oh so pleasant night sweats in the last few months I was recently diagnosed with terrible dust allergies and had to cover my bedding with these allergen teflon covers which just add to the heat! I feel like a steak on a grill some nights but love my feather duvet and will never give it up for blankets which I hate. I live near the ocean and it is cool at night year round but oh those night sweats! Tell me they go away soon?

Another good reason to eat spongebob's flaxseed bread daily

Progesterone Cream. I started having hot flashes in Jan. 20 - 30 per day. Started using progesterone cream from GNC and in 5 days they were gone, haven't had one since. There is a book by a Dr. Lee about using this cream for different things. I orginally started using this for ovarian cysts. I was ordering Happy PMS Cream (this is also a good progesterone cream) online and ran out then and didn't use it till the hot flashes came back. Also check out Suzanne Sommers book the Sexy Years. She recommends bioidentical hormones that you get from an endocrinoligist and a compounding pharmacist.

Thanks so much everyone! My mom had heard from her sister that flaxseeds could work so I think I am going to go get her some tomarrow. I feel so bad that she is going through that, it must suck, If the flaxseed doesn't work I'll try the Remifemin. Does that have any other side effects?

my mother suffers from horrible hot flashes...the only thing that helps is hormones. She loses slower because of the hormones but it's worth it for her.

I also used Black Cohosh for my hot flashes and it worked great for a while. Then it stopped working for me and I was having hot flashes every hour all day and all night. I saw my doctor and he put me on a low dose hormone replacement therapy. He said since it's the lowest dose, and I won't have to stay on it for an extended period of time the risk is minimal. I feel great since I started taking it - no hot flashes, no mood swings - just like my old self. Also, I did gain about 1 lb. after I started taking it and my weight fluctuated a little in the first month, but now it's stable and I haven't gained any more.

I had to give up the hormones. I can manage the flashes during the day but I was up all night. So I figured this is ridiculous. I put a fan on the floor and aimed it at my side of the bed and keep it on me all night. Once I settle down I cool off and usually, an hour later I need some sort of blanket.

Hi I wonder if any of you lovely ladies full of wisdom can advise me , I wonder why I am gaining again after having been so successful on Atkins( I lost 25 lbs in a few months) I have been on Atkins for 12 months. I had no TOM for 2 months ( after a few years of 15 days on 10 days off ), then this month terrible, I felt so ill, bones hurt joints were so painful , my boobies still hurt a week later and I feel bloated and gained 7lbs in a week.I was/am eating correctly and carefully. I can't seem to go above 25gms of carbs a day as my metabolism is very resistant. I did start Black Cohosh but it made me worse, symptoms were really much worse. I also started a vitamin supplement a couple of months ago , could that affect weight loss? Now I feel really wound up as I am no longer losing or maintaining , I am gaining. Any advice would be helpful.I have no one I know who is in the same position, everyone I know frowns on Atkins it is difficult to get help and support .
