Pregnant and Low Carb???
My daughter is 21 and pregnant and I was wondering if the adkins plan was safe for her. She had some weight to lose before she got pregnant and wants to keep from gaining alot more. I would appreciate any suggestions about this. She is due in June.
Thanks, Trisha |

I think low carb is fantastic for pregnancy - lots of protein, good fats, plenty of healthy carbs. Since gaining weight is important in pregnancy make sure to get adequate calories.
I personally couldn't lc during pg - I just craved bad stuff too much. Anyone who can do it deserves BIG kudos. |

From what I have read. Ketosis is not safe but low carb is ok.

She needs to gain weight during pregnancy. I am guessing she should ask her doctor for approval of a more liberal maintenance phase of this woe.

I'm not a doctor, but I don't see why keeping it to 100 grams of carbs a day would be bad. That's still 1/3 of what the average American eats and she definitely won't go into ketosis.

I have done maintenance with all 3 of my pregnancies. That is what DANDR suggests. You add in whole grains, dairy and more veggies to up your carb level - you need to stay out of ketosis. Of course I am sure the women with severe morning sickness are in ketosis so I am not sure WHY.... There is also an AWESOME thread on the Maintenance board for pregnant lowcarbers!!
Congrats on the new grandbaby! |

Low-carbing and Atkins is fine..as long as she does Maintenence levels..so no Ketosis! Reason being (and many argue about this) that no research has been done with pregnant mommies and ketosis. Personally..I wouldn't take the risk.
No reason she can't do low-carb though. Many plans like Sugar Busters or Maintenence levels of Atkins are prefered by many doctors to not have excessive weightgain. She shouldn't be tryng to lose weight at tis time..as regardless of HER weight.the baby does need to gain. Whole grains, fruit, protein and veggies are fab! and will help kep her gain healthy.
