I'm on it. It works well for me. BUT it is a tier 3 drug according to my insurance so I pay only $1.30 less than list price. I never heard anything about the water retention though.

Just went to the GYN 2 weeks ago. She prescribed it for me, for some problems I have been having..but said she chose that one because I have PCOS and that it is good for people w/ that, because they have bloating so much. I can't start mine until later this month....Let me know how it works for you...

I took it for aboout a year, and it really caused me to be bloated all the time and mean. I hate to sound negative about it. I never lost one single pound while I took them, I gained 20 lbs back and now it will not come off. I went to my GP and she took me off of Yasmine. The GP said that yasmine was very strong and also acted like a diuretic. The GP put me on something else and it didn't work out for me. I just have I hard time with BC pills. I hope they work for you.

I just started taking Yasmin back in May. I had an IUD before that because I always had problems with birth control(bloating, weight gain, etc.) and so far it's great. I've had no trouble losing.
I was also just diagnosed with PCOS and that's why I decided to take out the IUD. My doc said it will help the PCOS symptoms. If you do a search for Yasmine on this board, you'll find a lot of great info! I certainly did! Good Luck ![]() |

I've been on yasmin for a couple years now. I was on it when I started losing weight so I don't know how it's affected my weightloss. My doc also told me that it helps tho.

Yes, Yasmin has a component that's analagous to spironolactone (a diuretic) so it's theoretically supposed to help control the TOM bloat.
I say theoretically, because it just doesn't seem to do that for some people, but it sure works for me. I was on ortho tri cyclen and would bloat up and feel awful once a month, and now that's gone. Spironolactone is also a potassium sparing form of diuretic, so (again, theoretically) it should help low carbers who might need a little more potassium. Try it and see. YMMV but it's been great for me. |

I'm on it and I have no issues with it. My mom is and RN at an OBGYN, and she recommended Yasmin to me (tried Desogen first), 'cause it's low dose and acts as a dieuretic.

I was on Yasmin for almost 2 years and then I switched insurance and Health Net doesn't cover it. However, I definitely noticed a difference on it, puffy-wise. I had no side effects whatsoever on it, either. I am on Ortho Tri Cyclen now and I hate it.

Personally, I HATED it. I got off it about 4 months ago. I had headaches, mood swings, cramps (for the first time in my life), and weird skin irritations. I could not lose ONE pound on it, either.
However, it is my understanding that my experience is the exception, not the rule - although I have been on birth control for years, and I have not really had a problem with anything else :/ |

Hmmm...I always feel so lucky that I don't bloat up during TOM (altho a little disappointed that I have nothing to blame
)...I guess this could be the reason!! |

Way too much time on my hands!

I've been on it since dd was born (2.5 years ago) and love it! It's the first pill I've been on that I didn't gain a bunch of water weight. Normally I gain 3-4 pounds at TOM and w/ Yasmin I don't gain any and continue to lose. My ob/gyn said all of her patients love it and she takes it herself.

Luv it! Luv it! Luv it! And I stopped trying bcps because I hated them all. I have lost weight on it, don't get bloated and my gyn has approved it for me to skip TOMs with it. 4 TOMs per year .... YAHOOOOO! I would have never tried it if I didn't have to go the pill to take accutane. I had completely given up on taking the pill. I am so glad I did because I just love this one!

I was on it twice in the past few years. Just recently I was on it for two months - I LOVE it, but my GYN took me temporarily off of it. My BP was a little high when it was prescribed, so she said she wanted to see me in two months. Well, it was quite a bit higher at the time so I'm not taking it right now.
I DO love the benefits of taking it though.. my cramps were pretty much gone, TOM was lighter and shorter, and being that TOM was always unpredictable - when I was on Yasmin, I always knew when he was coming to visit! I never had any negatives in taking it. It also helped with pre-TOM break outs. |

I've been on birth control for 10 years but started having symptoms of menopause because the bc was supressing my body's estrogen levels. I looked for an option other than the bc pill and settled on the IUD Mirena. I've had it for about 4 months now and LOVE IT! My periods have virtually disappeared. This last time I didn't even have to wear a tampon since it's been reduced to some minor spotting when I go to the bathroom. I also love not having to remember to take the pill each day...I was always pretty good about remembering but it only takes one forgetful day on the pill. As far as cost, I had to pay my $20.00 co-pay for the gyno visit, my insurance covered the approx $500 cost of the IUD. I basically got 5 years of birth control for the low cost of $20.

Hi Kimmie....
Do you mind me asking what insurance you have? I need to find one that will cover the Mirena....I wanted to get it right after my son was born in March but my insurance would not cover it...I had PacifiCare at the time. |

I had Blue Cross HMO insurance at the time. My company has changed insurance since then. I went on the Mirena website and called their hotline...I gave them my insurance info and they called for me to verified that it would be covered. Once they assured me that it would be, I called my gyno and asked them to submit it for pre-certification of benefits. Once they had the letter from the insurance company agreeing to pay, she ordered the device and then called me to come get it inserted. It took about a month for all of that to happen. The Mirena people might be a good resource for you as far as insurance companies they've done business with who covered the costs.
They say that it's a great option after childbirth because your cervix is slightly stretched (from having the baby) and that it make insertion even easier. I haven't had children so it barely fit even after she did some stretching. My gyno actually has the Mirena and she loves it too. |
