Whose Pregnant out there??? I need some tips.
Hey all, I found out on Saturday that I am pregnant. My 1st too. Kind of overwhelming and unexpected. I don't want to gain back the 50 pounds I have already lost so.... I thought those pregnant people could tell me what they added to their diets. I don't have my 1st OB appt until Sept 14th and I need to know before then. I already asked if I can have Splenda in moderation. What have your doctor's said about low-carbing and pregnancy. I already started adding fruit in, but not sure on the rest and I don't think I am going to eat bread or potatoes often. Any feedback would be appreciated and helpful.
Thanks! Nicole |

Congrats on your pregnancy!
You can do the maintenance level of Atkins while pregnant. There's also a pregnancy thread over on the Maintain Lane. You can probably get some great advice. I don't feel like I should give a whole lot of advice on how to eat when pregnant, because I gained 55 lbs! I'm sure you will do great though. |

I didn't low-carb through my pregnancies so I can't help you there.
I gained 28 - 30 pounds with my first and just about 25 with my second. I would have liked to have gained less with the first. Personally, I think the key to keeping your gain reasonable while also nourishing the baby is to gain no more than 3 pounds in the first trimester if at all possible. Your body does not need a tremendous amount more energy (calories) to grow the baby until the second trimester, and then it's only +/- 300 more calories per day. Best wishes to you!

Ditto to what MonkeyBelly said. You only need about 300 cal. a day more which is a PB & J sandwich and a glass of milk. I was told that most women use pregnancy as an excuse to overeat and if you can avoid this you should be fine.
As to lo-carbing. I know quite a few women on a PCOS message board that I frequent who did maintenance levels throughout pregnancy, and they had great pregnancies. |

I had to be very strict about weight gain during pregnancy. Back in the dark ages, women were only supposed to gain 20 pounds. I found that I could eat quite a lot of "normal" food as long as I didn't eat any junk or sweets. I mean no junk or sweets at all, except I ate 1/2 gallon of weight watchers ice cream (that was the only low cal at that time) a week. I did eat a piece of my shower cake at about 8 months. Since you're already doing l/c, this should be easy for you. You've already cut out junk and sweets--just don't use this as an excuse to start back. Talk to you doc about other things to add back (dairy, fruit). Best of luck to you and congratulations.
