Good morning ladies. I want to thank all of you for your encouraging words yesterday. I'm going to try not to worry too much about the weight. I am not going to go hog wild though. Sugar makes me feel crappy except after I've thrown up all's I can keep down is vanilla wafers and fruit punch....but otherwise I've been avoiding refined sugar and white flour like the plague. I have been eating quite a lot of bread and peanut butter and have tried to minimize the damage by eating Atkins whole wheat breat. Also, I have been eating several nectarines a day since they don't give me heartburn like all the other fruit and they seem to help keep me somewhat regular. The other thing that I've been having a ton of is milk because it keeps the heartburn at bay. This is so weird though, because I used to hate milk. Otherwise, I've been trying different things like Arby's roast beef in a whole wheat torilla (toss the nasty bun of course), chicken divan (can't eat that again for a while...the broccoli made my poop so smelly it made me gag profusely while going. Ok, that was probably TMI), and beef stew. The last couple days I've had ham sandwhiches with cheese and a few Baked Layes potato chips on top (I haven't been eating a lot of potato chips...just a small handful at most). For breakfast I have cheerios and milk, because that is all that will stay down then. So, I think overall I'm not eating terrible and I'm definately not eating a large amount of food....but I do know there is a lot of carbs there. I guess I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing and hope that my body is more used to the carbs now and the weight stablizes a bit for a while.

About the cloudy pee that was discussed yesterday. I've been having this too, but haven't been concerned, because I'm pretty sure what is causing it. Since my cervical mucous has increase so much I think it is mixing in with the urine and making it cloudy. It is the worst when I first wake up in the morning and also after I've had a BM or have been throwing up (the pushing/gaging probably pushes more mucous out I suppose). So anyway, there is my theory on the cloudy pee.

Have a great day everyone. And thanks again.

Amy

Haven't checked in in a while. How is everyone?

Wow Amy,

What an ordeal. Your poor body sure is going throught the ringer!

As for the weight gain, this is my (very layman's) understanding of what happens when one goes from lo-carb/ketosis to eating carbs again:

There are two kinds of "blood sugar" available to the body: glucose (from ingested carbs) and glycogen (glucose that's been stored in the liver for a rainy day).

When we go on a lo-carb diet, the body first uses up all of its glucose (fairly quickly). Then the liver starts releasing its glycogen stores to burn. If we continue to deprive the body of carbs, the liver stores of glycogen will eventually be depleted. Once that happens (takes anywhere from 2-4 days on average), the body is forced to start burning fat for energy - and voila, we are in ketosis.

The thing about the glycogen stored in the liver is that it takes a lot of water to store it. So, when you first get rid of all of your glycogen, you can lose a tremendous amount of weight in the first week or two of a lo-carb diet (I think I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks I was on Atkins).

Unfortunately, the reverse is true when you start eating carbs again. The body sucks up a bunch of water (weight) to store the glycogen in the liver (perhaps that's why you felt as though it was all in your gut).

Anyway, this is an incredibly long-winded way of saying that your weight gain sounds totally normal, it will level off, and as soon as you're in ketosis again (after the baby is born), those particular 10 pounds will probably melt right off.

Don't sweat the carbs right now. It's better to get your calories in however you can (while your baby's brain and nervous system are developing) than to worry about where the calories are coming from. It's really good that you can keep milk, ham and cheese and nectarines down. Good sources of protein and vitamins.

Hope this helped, and hope you're feeling better soon!

Cheers,
LizzyD

Hi guys-

Lizzy- Where have you been? Hope you are feeling well.

Hi Amy-

Littlebear- Hope you had a good time on vacation. I need one bad!

Not much going on here - looking forward to the weekend. I am going to an outlet mall this weekend with my mom, aunt and cousin. Leaving Jessica with daddy- I feel a little guily about this but I don't do it too often. I think it's because I am a working mom and I feel I should spend every moment with her- ya know.
I know that she is a happy well adjusted little girl who knows she is loved but I still feel guilty sometimes-
I wonder if it will just get worse with 2 kids??

Hi Mommies,

Amy, sorry you are still feeling poorly but you still have a great range of foods that you can eat.

Hi Lizzy!

Kristen, I know how you feel! When Max was 11 months old, I went diving in Belize for 3 days. He handled it a lot better than I did. Now that he is older, the absence of either parent has a much higher impact. When DH went to Canada last Feb, Max never said one word about him the whole time he was gone. But as soon as DH got home, he had permanent shadow. Max still gets very, very upset if he sees Eric leaving in the truck. And I can't even think about being away from Max for more than 8 hours. Now that I know how much he is capable of missing us, it hurts me too much to leave him. And since I plan on breast feeding this baby, I don't expect to have too much time away from my kids for the next 2 years! The only thing that saves my sanity is nap time, when I can have a few hours to myself! Enjoy your day out shopping.

Saludos,

Suzanne

Hi Ladies!

Thanks for the "cloudy pee" advice and opinions. Now that I know others have had it I won't worry. I just couldn't believe that I forgot to ask my doc about it at my appointment! We have an appointment with the genetics counselor coming up tomorrow. They will talk to us about CVS, amnio, and all that other testing. I'm 35 so I guess they really go for the scare tactics.

I have two questions that I'd like your advice on:
1) WHEN oh when did your morning sickness go away? (The constant, awful feeling, not just occaional nausea)
and
2) I have a job interview coming up. Should I mention I'm PG?

Thanks!

Kelley

Kelley-

When I was sick with Jessica I was around 18 weeks before I started felling better.

I interviewed when I was pregnant with Jessica and I told- But I would go with your gut during the interview. It may affect your insurance? Good luck!

Morning ladies!!

Amy: I'm glad you are feeling better about the weight issue. Also, and natural relief to heartburn in pineapple. Fresh or canned, it really soothes.

Lizzy: Good to see you!!

Kristen: Have fun shopping! Don't feel bad... enjoy yourself. Mommies need that sometimes!

Suzanne: Love the new avatar!!

Kelley: My nausea left at about 17 weeks. I had occassional nausea after that, but not much. It's MUCH better now.

On the interview- I'd go with your gut.

I'm doing good today. It's my birthday! DH is taking me out to dinner tonight. It should be fun.

Kelley, I wouldn't say anything at the interview right now. You're at 10 weeks so even if you get the job, you still have a couple of months before you have to tell them anything.

I'm worried as well, I know two kids is going to be much more work, but we'll get used to it right? Also DS currently is a momma's boy, I don't want him to be hurt when he sees me with the baby. I'm going to share my time with both of them but I know he's going to have to go through an adjusting stage because he knows he's got mine and DH's full attention right now, not mentioning the grandparents and his aunt.

Hi everyone!

Just sneaking in real quick to say Kaden Alexander was born on Monday July 12 at 11:29am. Healthy 6 lbs 12 oz, 19" long. Good set of lungs and very strong wiggle worm!

I went to L&D Sunday night around 11pm after my contractions were 5 min apart for good several hours. I was good 3cm, -1 station, almost fully effaced. I was having back labor. At 3am, I was only 3+cm, fully dilated. Very dissapointed, needless to say.

The OB did a quick ultrasound and found that he was sideways, causing back labor. Here's an advice for everyone. If you have been laying on your left side pretty much most of the time, lay on your right just as equally! That's why he was sideways.

Because my back was hurting so much, I agreed to taking Ambient (sleeping pill) and a shot of morphine for the pain. That only worked for about 2 hours. They checked me at 7am, and I was 7cm!

By then, my back was killing me, ctx coming about 2 min apart. Yes, I asked for epidural. The next thing I felt was a sharp cramping on my right side. The nurse found that it was my bladder, so she emptied it. Next thing I knew, his head was starting to come out. Then came about 10 people in the room all rushing for delivery. I think that's when his heartrate dropped. The OB put a monitor on his head. She pushed him back in because she thought he was getting squished. She was right - HB back to normal.

I started pushing then. It only seemed like 10 min, but it was actually 45 min. They let me watch it in a mirror - strongly suggested. I had a 2nd degree tear, 2 stiches. Still pretty sore today.

Will try to post pictures later today. His nights and days are screwed up, so I didn't sleep until 5am. Breastfeeding is going pretty good. Sore there too...

Have a good one!

Congratulations Katie. I love the name Kaden. That's beautiful.

OK girls, we're thinking if we have a girl, that name would be Leyna. What do you think? DS' name is Daya (pronounced Day-a)

Welcome to the world Kaden! Way to go, Katie!!!! I can't wait to see the photos.

Happy Birthday Sarah!!!!

Pauline, thanks for sharing your birth plan. It really helped me to have an outline. I am translating my birth plan to Spanish, just in case I end up going to the hospital.

Great names everybody! I love Kaden and your names are great, too, Viki. Would Leyna be pronoucned like Elena without the first E? We always have an easy time with girl names but can't think of a boy name. Right now a girl will be Brianna, a boy will be Ranger, Phoenix, or Kin (pronounced Keen, means sun in Maya).

Suzanne, I like Keen. Leyna is pronounced like Elena but without the first E. So it'll be spelled either Leyna or Lehna. What do you guys prefer? I think maybe Lehna. Haven't thought about if its going to be another boy.

I like both spellings, however if it's spelled Leyna it will most likely be pronounced right. If I read Lehna, I would say Lenna. Make sense? But, that's just my take on it.

The actual correct traditional Indian way of saying it is Lenna. So I guess I would go with Lehna. Thanks Sarah.

WeLcOmE KADEN!!!

I have never heard of back labor. Did it not feel like regular contractions? I love all the stuff I'm learning from you guys.

HaPpY BiRtHdAy SARAH!!!! Yay!!!

What cute names you ladies have come up with. I agree with the spelling of Lehna for the pronounciation you want, Viki.

I like Ranger for a boy too but have to admit I think of the character in the Janet Evanovich novels (certainly not a bad thing: he's a hunk!). Is that where you got the name from Suzanne?

I forgot about that Ranger! Yes, he was a hunk. My husband picked the name Ranger and I am sure he has never read a Janet Evanovich novel. It probably comes from a computer game or Lord of the Rings....LOL
