Good morning ladies...hope it is ok that I start the thread....I think I made all the corrections from yesterday. Sorry if I missed any.
Well, I had a pretty emotional day yesterday. Went to the doctor for my second checkup. The first thing they did of course was weigh me. I had just eaten and drank a bunch before the appointment and I had a very full bladder....but the scale was still 10 whole pounds higher than last month! My heart just sank. I've spent the last month just trying to keep food down and haven't enjoyed a bit of it and then I see a 10 pound gain! As soon as the nurse brought my husband and I to our room I broke down in tears. My husband was trying so hard to be supportive, but he knows how sensitive I am about this subject. I got myself together before the doctor came in, but of course she noticed the gain right away on the chart. I tried to explain to her about working midnights and had been eating and drinking all night so that probably covered a few of those pounds. Then I told her I was on a low carb diet before getting sick and then she didn't seem so concerned anymore. But I am. How is it possible to gain 6-7+ pounds simply by eating more carbs and not more food? Is it my hormones? Is it mostly water retention? I would think water retention but my hands and feet are not retaning fluid...I swear it is all in my gut! Am I just that sensitive to carbs?!This scared me so much that I was determined to go lower carb. I tried to bring lower carb stuff to work with me and then I ended up throwing up even with the Zofran nausia medicine! (Note to self....cottage cheese is nasty coming back up! ). After that I started bawling in the bathroom. I tried to bring myself back together but I wimpered at my desk for a hour before I tried to eat or drink anything else. Now that I got something down I feel better, but of course it was carbs that I ate. I just don't know what to do, except pray that the weight stabilizes for a while. Well, I had made myself so upset by the weight gain that I was totally out of it for much of the rest of the appointment. She did do a yeast culture since I told her about the mucous and itching...but she said everything looked normal. Then she tried to hear the heart with a doppler and no luck, because she said I have a tipped uterus. At the time I didn't think anything of it, but now I'm wondering if that is something to be concerned about...the doctor didn't seem too worried though. So she did an ultrasound instead..that was cool. We got to see our little peanut on the screen. He/she was kicking their little legs and swimming up and down. That sure brightened my day a bit. So I guess the day wasn't a total loss. But I'm still concerned about this weight gain. Does anybody have any suggestions or went through something similar getting pregnant after low carbing? Any help is appreciated. I don't want to balloon up with this pregnancy. Amy Last edited by metroames : 07-14-2004 at 03:38 AM. |

Amy....huggggggs hon. As far as the weight gain, I showed a 20 lb. gain at my 2nd appt. after confirmation of pregnancy and I too was devestated. But I also knew a lot of that was what I had eaten that day (carbs to remain not nauseaus), water retention and that carbs were increased in my diet period. However, I find my scale at home to be much less than that and we are going to see if her scale reflects differently...so it may stabalize.
Remember though...as long as your baby is healthy, you can lose any weight you gain. We already know how and have done it before. I'm not saying going nuts on eating habits...but a lot of us have found in the first few months we can only tolerate carbs, which our bodies haven't had in awhile and are clinging to once we eat it. Just focus on that little peanut you saw....your body is going to go through a lot of changes, enjoy them and savor them....because trust me, once that baby is born, you'll miss some of them. As for me....my job has totally changed. I now am outside the entire 8 hours and it is extremely hot (high 90's) with tremendous humidity. Anybody have any tips on how to survive pregnancy in this heat?? LOL. I bought some powder to help with sweat...sunscreen is in bathroom...and my water bottle is definitely getting a workout with ice water. I guess my concern is the heat and my own health and this baby. Last edited by BrattyChelle : 07-14-2004 at 03:58 AM. |

Good Morning!
Amy: Sounds like you might just "have to do what you have to do"... and thats eat moderate carbs for your health and the baby's. Drink tons of water and just TRY not to be consumed by the weight issue. Your body prepares itself for pregnancy by holding onto water, increases in blood volume etc... You might be one of these pregnant women that just retains a LOT of fluid. I know I did with my first pregnancy. Also give your body time to adjust. If all of that doesn't help you might just have to forget about the weight issue during pregnancy so it doesn't cause you mental stress and thus stress on the pregnancy. If you know its going to cause you problems when you get on the scale - Don't ask how much you have gained, get on the scale backwards so you won't see. Don't ask your dr - THEY will let you know when its a concern for the health of the pregnancy. FL: Outside? You poor thing!! I would be concerned as well about sitting in the heat and sun.... of course I am fairskinned and burn within 5 minutes LOL Stay hydrated!!! I had an appt yesterday. Still about the same - a little more effaced. The dr was ready to schedule and induction for Thursday but got her little date wheelie thing out and said it would be a little too soon without an "emergency". Soooooo, I have another appt on Friday and hopefully they will schedule the inducement for next week. The problem is getting the same response from a different dr LOL it gets VERY frustrating hearing 4-5 different opinions and solutions. Anyway - Michael is ranging within the 8lbs mark now (just like my girls), dr believes he will be in the 8 1/2-9 1/2 lbs range next week. The dr I saw was the same one that delivered both my girls so she is really up on my history and all of that. She pointed out that I have NEVER dialated past 3cm on my own, so she doesn't think there will be more this time around either. Just really nervous about another induction - I discussed MANY options with her and will with the other dr this Friday. Hope everyone is doing GREAT!!! Katie is that baby here???

Good morning ladies! Thanks for the compliments on my picture.
![]() Amy: Try not to stress. Weight gain is different for everyone, and the important thing is to be eating what will stay down. The health of your baby is much more important than pounds on the scale. Your body is going through a lot of adjustments right now. Stressing about weight gain isn't good for you or baby. FL: Ugh, I don't know how you do it. I HATE the heat, especially with humidity. Have you seen those things that you soak in water and tie around your neck? They are filled with these little crystals that swell up when wet. They really work, and keep coolness on the veins in your neck. It helps a lot. Kristen: I'm glad Jessica like the movie! How fun!! Angela: I'm glad you are doing okay! Good luck at your appointment on Friday! You have a BIG baby in there!! ![]() Not too much new here... it's getting over 100 during the day. We're going camping this weekend, so hopefully we can escape some of this heat! ![]() Last edited by Mrs Sarah : 07-14-2004 at 08:21 AM. |

Good morning ladies. Welcome to my private hell known popularly as peach season!! Well, the peaches were ready to pick yesterday (we have only 1 tree but we picked about 300 peaches!!!). So yesterday I made 5 pies, 12 pints of jam, and processed 5 gallons of peaches, all for freezing. That went through a bit less than half of the fruit, which is currently still sitting on my counter waiting, waiting.....
What shall I make today?? Argh! Baby is doing ok so far with the fetal testing. He is passing his tests, which is what counts. Metro, I've gained quite a bit this pg. Yes, going from a lc diet to eating carbs can and will add 10 lbs. in a month. Just try moderation. You need to eat what your body will tolerate and keep down!! Angel, hope they set your induction SOON! Hate waiting out those last few days. Hi to everyone else. I'm off to work on peaches...

Good Morning Everyone,
I loved seeing all those pics you organized ladies posted yesterday! I hope I get it together to at least post my ultrasound pic! Amy: You and I are due at about the same time so I bet your peanut looked a lot like mine did on my U/S this week! What a feeling! I could have watched it forever. As for the weight gain, was that a difference of 10 lbs. from visit to visit at the doctor's office or a difference from your home scale to the office? At home, I weigh after I get up and go potty and before I eat or drink anything, plus I'm not usually wearing clothes LOL! It could be anything, sweetie. I have bad M/S too (but I'm on pyridox, not zofran, but willing to try just about anything at this point) and I notice that even if I have a "bad" day where I barf a lot, my intestines still feel irritated and bloated and I can feel I'm retaining water or something. It sounds like you are eating healthy, so just eat whatever sounds good. I decided to continue tracking my foods on Fitday even after I became PG, and I am getting about 175-200g/carbs per day! Yikes! Meat makes me want to barf, eggs are touch-and-go, and carbs sound good and thus tend to stay down. Don't worry too much over this! AmyJuli: (from yesterday) I had to laugh at your attempt to eat a porkchop and broccoli for lunch. I'm in the same boat: meat and LC is off the menu for now! I even had a (small) order of french fries at Carl's Jr. last week! Haven't had potatoes in over a year! Sarah: Your nursery sounds like it will be so cute with all your planning. I can understand wanting to wait for the second ultrasound though, but I agree w/ Kristen, there are a lot of gender neutral designs out there too. DFL: Why do you have to be outside in the heat and humidity? Do they know you're PG? Heat just makes me even more nauseous and useless. We had to put off our vacation plans until I feel better because of that. Teach: Peaches sound good to me right now! I'm coming over! Angela: Good luck with your induction! Baby Blue: $10 for three at the movies AND popcorn is GREAT! Around here we'd pay $6 each just for a matinee. I still haven't seen Harry Potter, but it's on my list. As for me, my pee is still cloudy. I had it tested for a UTI last week and it was negative. I notice it is cloudy just somethimes but always after I have a bout of vomiting. Weird, huh? I completely forgot to ask my Dr. about it on Monday. They took another urine sample then. Do you think I should worry? Any other ladies with m/s experiencing this? Kelley

Kristen: Sorry about the glucose test. That sucks!! I hope you pass the 3 hour.
Teach: I'm totally drooling now! I love peaches! I just learned to can and freeze veggies last year, I really enjoy it. It's a TON of work though! Madame: My pee is cloudy sometimes too, I hadn't really thought anything of it? And you are right, there are a lot of neutral designs. I'm going to try and get something picked out in the next week or two. ![]() |

Metro: Don't feel bad. I too gained 10 lbs almost right off. I am already at 204 now from a low of 192.5. It does happen. Between the breast growth increases, the blood volume increases and the water retaining from eating more carbs in two months than we did all last year is bound to have some effect. While I didn't have the vomiting, I did have nausea and only carbs seemed to help. Don't even put any meat in front of me. Broccoli smelled nasty and don't even talk to me about coffee.
It will get better. 12 weeks seemed to be the magic number for me. Almost as soon as it came round. Poof! nausea gone! Hang in there girl!Well we finally got all the tiling done. Now onto exterior paint and cleaning and touch ups. Hoping to have the house on the market soon. At least i am getting my exercise. Goodness know I haven't wanted to go near the gym. Have a great day! |

Hi everyone.
Amy, don't worry about the weight gain. You might even out later. I gained a total of 45 pounds with my last pregnancy. I used to gain 5-10 lbs every month during the second trimester. Mostly that was due to my eating tons of fast food because I was too lazy and tired to cook and it was just easy. I'm trying to each much better this time around. With my two year old now, he always keeps me active so I'm getting much more activity than I did last time too. Just eat whatever you can handle for now. I just brought home a bag of peaches from my Dad's backyard last night too. I was thinking of making a couple of peach cobblers and then freezing it. SHall I just prep it and then freeze or shall I bake it and then freeze it? Angela, did you have a bad experience with being induced last time? I was induced last time and it wasn't a bad experience for me at all. THen again, I really do want to go natural this time and also not have a c-section again. I'm sure you're pretty excited though and can't wait until Michael is here. ARe the doctors going to let you deliver naturally if Michael is over 8.5 pounds? Madame, my pee has been cloudy once or twice and I didn't think much of it. Its definitely much more darker now than non-pregnancy. More orangy. Sorry, too much information I know. FL: What do you do for a living? That must be so hard. Can they let you do something that is inside now that you are pregnant? Make sure you wear a hat, maybe that'll help cool you down. Hello to everyone else. I'll check back in later. |

Hi Mommies,
Desp in FL, I commiserate with you 100% on the heat. Most of the time it is actually hotter in the house that in is outside and I am so uncomfortable. Sorry to hear you got transferred outside. Try keeping a wet bandana on your neck. I've seen a special bandana type thing that you can freeze and it stays cold longer than a regular one. It really helps me when I get overheated and can't go for a swim or take a cold shower. Sarah, your belly is so cute! You really do look pregnant now. Stacy, Cassidy is a doll! Kelley, I don't think the cloudy urine means anything, otherwise I'd have heard from my doctor by now. Mine is ALWAYS cloudy. Kristen, sorry about the gtt. Hope you ace the 3 hour. Ellen, peach ice cream would make me swoon right now. Angela, hope you don't have an induction this time. Are you taking your EPO? Having lots of sex? Driving on bumpy roads? Metro, I gained 10 lbs in one month as soon as M/S was over. It will probably level out. If you are swelling from water weight gain, try dandelion root extract. I took some for the first time today and it did wonders for me! I am so hot and grumpy that there is no hope for me today. Last night was terrible, no wind at all. The battery system crapped out around 2 AM (same time as the wind) so I didn't even have a fan until DH fixed me up with some electricity around 6 AM. I didn't even think about going walking this AM. My sister and I swam out to the reef and back instead. DH and DS took one of the boats and met us at a great natural swimming hole on the edge of the fringing reef. So we swam out, had play time for about an hour, then swam back. As I mentioned, I took dandelion for the first time before I went swimming. Don't know if it was being in the water or the dandelion, but my swelling is so much better now. I've been peeing like crazy but drinking a lot of water, too. Now I think I'll go in my air conditioned bed room and stay there for the rest of the day.... Hasta luego, Suzanne

Ellen: Geez - now I want a fried peach pie..... How's THAT for lc'ing LOL. The peaches do sound delicious!!
Kristen: Sorry about the GTT! I normally fail the 1hr and have to do the 3hr (since PCOS w/ IR) but I always pass it. Hope your results come back ok!! With the great job you have done on the weight I couldn't imagine it coming back positive!! Kelley: Hope the ms eases up on you! Wendy: CONGRATS to your dh on the job!!!! I am so happy for you all - I know you were hoping that this one would come through!! Shandril: I would say you have definitely done your exercise and MORE with the house prep - after its all done you are going to feel like you are on vacation! Viki: My last induction was not quite how I envisioned it LOL... I had the most unattentive nurse who didn't check me (and I didn't really know she should before inducing), she had just come on shift and started the pit drip. I told her I was going to want an epi since doing the pit. She then DISAPPEARED... I immediately went into hard contractions - told her that my contractions NEVER show up well on the monitors (they had to do an internal with my 1st). The contractions were ontop of each other and extremely hard. I couldn't talk, couldn't catch my breath. By the time Mike found her she came in looked at me and panicked. She turned off the pit b/c I was getting ready to pull it out... she ran out and got the epi guy, I sat up to get it and I immediately said "She is coming out and I can't lay back down". The nurse then shoved me back, checked me, went RUNNING out the room again, Maggie was crowning (water intact). A few seconds later the dr came in, popped my water and out Maggie came in a couple of small pushes (1 hour and 15 minutes from the start of the pitocin). I have NEVER EVER EVER been in that kind of pain and the next few weeks I felt like I fell off the roof of a 3 story building. I would love to go natural (and think I really could do it after having the pit) but I want an EPI immediately if they have to do the pit. Didn't mean for this to turn into a book Excited but really nervous.Suzanne: The swimming sounds WONDERFUL - the no a/c DOESN'T!!! I think I would suffocate LOL I have been doing the RRLT and Borage Seed Oil (higher GLAs) and I really think it has helped "prepare" my cervix b/c it is super soft and effacing nicely. My problem is the dialation, a couple of drs seem to agree that my odds of dialating further about about zero... For some reason my body does not produce "productive" contractions on its own. Its really depressing.... seems like anything to do with hormones in my body is screwed up. I had to LOL about the bumpy road - I have been hitting speed-bumps around here at full-force lately. Unfortunately I think its only going to cause me to have to get my SUV re-aligned LOL. Last edited by AngelHope : 07-14-2004 at 12:38 PM. |

Angela- Man- What a horrible nurse! I thought my nurse was bad- LOL! I hope Michaels birth is better!
I just watched a show last night on Discovery Health cancel about unconventional births- I am fascinated by water births - They seem so amazing and natural to me- Is anyone planning on one of these? I had major complications with Jessica and had an emergency c-seaction so I know this is not a choice for me. |

Hello!
Oh, I have been away for so long! Been on vacation and have been working summer school the last 3 days, and have been too tired to get on the puter.
Amy - I gained about 12 pounds in my first trimester - they say the avergae is 3! Then about 13 in my second. Well now i am 30 weeks and the gain has slowed. I too, didn't eat much, watched what i ate, but it didn't matter, your body is giong to do what it wants..... But now that i am 30 weeks my gain has really setttled down. i am at a 26 pound gain, which is totally normal. I now how you are feeling sweetie - but don't let it make you sad, it's not worth it......... Just keep being careful and focus on your little peanut - you are not alone in the world of crazy weight gain!!!!!!!!! ![]()
