*cough cough, sniff sniff* Ok, I'm ready to be completely finished with this cold! I had a VERY lazy weekend. It was wonderful. I slept sooo much. I went to bed last night at 10 and didn't get up till 7 this morning. THis all leaves me wondering... WHAT happened to the 2nd trimester energy that I hear people talk about? Is it a big myth?
Other news... well, I'm officially a pizza junkie. Its about the only thing that sounds good to me lately. My DH thinks he's in heaven. Since LC'ing the past couple years pizza has been scarce around our house untill now!!! |

TRISHA – Pizza does sound good. I have a place that I love near work, but they’re too far away to deliver to my house! DARN! I dunno… Maybe that’s really a good thing!!! LOL! I don’t do the chain pizza places anymore, because they don’t have the veggie toppings I like, and I’m not allowed to have the pepperoni or sausage or any kind of processed meats with the nitrates. Ah well… Like I said, maybe it’s a good thing!
Okay, so I found the secret to being able to clean my whole house on a weekend while in my third trimester... This wondrous thing called a nap. I didn't mean to, but I was worn out, so I laid down for a couple of hours, and then there was no stopping me. I scrubbed the toilet, tub, bathroom floor, and countertops... Put all kinds of stuff away, FINALLY vaccuumed, cleaned the kitchen... WHEW! Now I just need to put the baby furniture together. Something tells me it will look better put together than in boxes in my hallway! LOL!

Hi everyone,
This is my first time posting on this board. I was doing pretty good on Atkins (lost 30lbs), still had about 50lb to go and found out last Thursday that I'm pregnant! We already have one beautiful daughter (3 1/2 - Nikki). In Jan 2001 my husband was diagnosed with cancer (Nikki was 8 months old). Right before he started chemo we froze some sperm at a cryobank. He's been in remission (and off chemo) for 1 year and 8 months. We were planning on starting to "try" to get pregnant through IUIs or IVF at his 2 year mark which would be in May. Well, lo and behold, we got pregnant on our own. We really feel blessed, as we didn't think this was possible :-) Anyway, now I'm trying to figure what/how to eat. I know I shouldn't gain too much weight while pregnant because I'm already overweight. I'm so afraid that adding carbs back in will cause me to gain a lot. Any tips from you all would be greatly appreciated! What do you eat? What do you drink? Do you drink diet sodas, etc.? By the way, I THINK I'm due on 9/27 or 9/28. My first exam is not until 2/16 (around 8 weeks). Of course we're praying that all stays well up until that time. Thanks, txaggie |

Hi Guys,
Well yesterday was beautiful here weather wise and I was actually in good spirits. Since becoming pg I'm always some combinating of grumpy, depressed or irritable, so it was a nice change. I met a friend and went for a 4 mile walk around the lake downtown, so the exercise helped too. My dreams were really bizarre again last night and I kept thinking (in my dream) that 'I don't feel like me anymore.' Pregnancy is really quite a trip! Whoever starts the thread tomorrow, could you please add my due date: 9/8/04? Trish--Hope you get to feeling better! Pregnant and sick is just not fair. |

Trish: Hope your cold goes away soon!! As for pizza - I looooooovvvvvvedddddd pizza with my first 2 pregnancies (and anytime before/after that LOL) NOW this time around I don't really care for it too much.... strange... I have had the weirdest craving lately... slaw dogs (hotdogs with coleslaw on them) from the Varsity!! I am having DREAMS of them! weird weird weird LOL
Jenn: Ok, I am going to try your "secret" out today!!! My house is a disaster since the stomach bug has come to visit... I am going to just take a DEEP breath and tackle one room at a time. Erin has demolished the playroom!! Poor kid has been on her own and I guess took the opportunity to pull out every toy, every book, every movie, everything LOL... I doubt if I will have the energy YOU had... you were a cleaning crazy woman!!!TXAGGIE: Welcome and congrats!! You and your family have truely been blessed!! I love hearing miraculous stories like yours! I am just now getting back on some type of lc plan, in the beginning it was "grab what I thought COULD eat", protein was not high on that list. Now I am just adding fruits, whole fat yogurt (sometimes making yocheese), veggies I normally wouldn't eat lc'ing (carrots, other root veggies ), and more dairy. I am trying to stay with whole grains and basically trying to stay away from the junkie bad carbs (white). Some days it works better than other. I usually drink water or decaf iced tea w/ splenda. Good Luck!!Trolly: Glad your mood is improving! I know it must suck to feel like that constantly and it can make a vicious never-ending circle. Maybe it has a lot to do with the winter blues... hopefully you will get more pretty weather to enjoy!!!! Ditto on the dream thing, I have some REALLY wacky ones!! LOL

You know I think I'd be able to resist the pizza urges if the stupid pizza advertisers stopped sending flyers with pictures on them to my house!
I think I'm a lil psycho because I was disappointed with a pizza early last week (because it didn't taste or look like the picture) so Friday night I sent DH to a local place with their flyer and told him to tell them I wanted a pizza that looked just like the flyer (minus the pepperoni). My husband told the guy I was pregnant and what I wanted. The guy was very good natured, laughed, and said he'd do his best. He hit it right on the mark! YUM! Jennifer: Lucky you! I think my house will probably just completely go to pot in the 3rd trimester since I can't manage to get it all cleaned in my 2nd trimester! I'm a big lazy tired butt lately. txaggie: CONGRATS! That is awesome you were able to get prego on your own. That is really a blessing. Well, I hope you are able to stick to a low-carb lifestyle better than I've been able to. I'm 17 weeks and still nauseated alot and throw up about once a day. I have been eating primarily carbs and can't stomach meat at all. I do try to eat a fair amount of cheese and nuts so I get some protein tho. I do drink diet coke, alot of people on here only drink diet rite tho. Trolly: Glad you had a good day yesterday! Some of those dreams are crazy aren't they?! I've had some very vivid and odd ones. Angel: slaw dogs?! Never heard of those! I would probably enjoy them if I could actually eat meat right now. Meat seems to sit in my stomach like lead lately. I dreamt of loaded baked potatos last night! Hmmmm... so will it be pizza or a baked potato for dinner tonight? What is it with me and food lately!? lol |

txaggie - Welcome and congrats!!! It sounds like your DH is recovering well - glad to hear. I also try to stay LC, but meat was so repulsive in the first tri. It's gotten better lately. I ate a ton of fruits and whole gaines, and tried to eat veggies. I tried to stay away from white carbs, but it was very difficult. I drink Diet Rite if I want fizz, which is sweetened with Splenda, which is safe.
Trish - Get well soon! I sometimes still have no energy, especially at night. I go to bed by 11pm on weekends. I slept for 10 hours this weekend. It felt good. Maybe as soon as your cold is completely gone, you'll be back to your old self! Jennifer - It sounds like you're having a nesting instinct! I know, it's too soon. I've been wanting to clean lately, but more in the closet. The thought of cleaning the toilet makes me want to vomit profusely. Trolly - How nice you were able to walk around the lake! It's been so cold here, all I want to do is hybernate. Hi, Angelhope! I've been battling ear aches for the past few weeks. I've had fluid in my ears off and on since last summer! I have a feeling it never went away. I was on antibiotic 2 different times. This time, I'm trying natural remedy - garlic oil. It stinks, but I think it's working, and it's better than taking a bunch of meds. My sinuses are constanly draining. It's amazing how much crap is coming out. Happy Monday! |

KATIE – I really hope the nesting instinct kicks in this time around… I did clean, but I really had to make myself do it. I just have to remember to go easy with the bleach products. I love the clean scent of bleach… Well, not the strong scent, but the afterscent it leaves.
TXAGGIE – WELCOME!!! My cousin and his wife also got pregnant after he had radiation treatments. It’s always good to hear stories like that. TROLLY – You’re grumpy? LOL! I think that’s pretty normal. Heck, I can be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster when I’m not pregnant… Thankfully, I have a very patient, loving husband! LOL! I’m also glad to hear your weekend went well!!! ![]() ANGELA – I can only imagine! Kids are a little like hurricanes when left unattended, aren’t they? Gosh! I’m so glad you’re feeling better though. Heck, my daughter can be quite a hurricane WITH CONSTANT SUPERVISION!!! LOL! Slaw dogs? Wow… I dunno why, but that sounds really, really good!!! TRISHA – That’s hilarious about you and the pizza flyer! You have a good hubby though! Okay, I just noticed that I misspelled vacuumed, and it’s really bugging me. LOL! Now I can’t change it! |

Regarding morning sickness....
I was SO incredibly sick with my first pregnancy. It lasted 5 long months. I tried everything, even Phenergen (sp). That was horrible...I took 1/4 pill and it knocked me out for 4 hours. My morning sickness was so bad that by my 6 month I had only gained 6 lbs. I tried the crackers and the Sprite and the Zofran and the wrist bands with NO luck. Finally, in my 4th month I found something that virtually knocked out my morning sickness....Benadryl! I took one Benadryl in the morning and had hardly any morning sickness at all. My OB/GYN had approved it for allergies and I had heard it helped with morning sickness (something about it working on your central nervous system). Anyway, it worked wonders for me and if I start getting really sick with this pregnancy I'm going to ask my doctor if I can try it again. I can't even begin to tell you how sick I was....that Benadryl was a wonderful thing :-) I hope this helps someone, txaggie |

Trisha--I wish we had a pizza place here. I am just too lazy to make my own. Yesteray I had a high carb day and ate some frozen lasagna. It gave me the worst gas. My body just can't handle the carbs like it used to. Glad to hear your cold is getting better.
Jenn--I may find out what house work is like once again. Max's nanny is going to have 3 days off this week. She also does 90% of the cleaning. Txaggie--Glad you found us! Congratulations on this very special pregnancy. That is a wonderful story about your husbands recovery. With my first pregnancy, I was at my highest weight ever when I got pregnant. I lost 10 lbs the first trimester due to m/s and ended up gaining a total of only 18 or 20 lbs. When I got home from the hospital, I weighed 5 lbs less than I did when I got pregnant! During that pregnancy, I ate moderately of everything. This time, I am adding back carbs in the form of fruit and whole grains. The frozen lasagna fiasco yesterday made me realize why I don't want any of that white stuff (ie sugar, flour, rice, pototoes) in my diet any more. I am slightly nauseous all day long but don't puke and still manage to eat at least 100 gms of protein per day. Everything I have read about pregnancy says you should stay away from aspartame which is in most diet sodas (at least here in Mexico). If I want bubbles, I drink agua gasificada (seltzer water). I add lemon juice and splenda or flavored extracts or Davinci syrups made with splenda. I also stay away from caffeine now that I am preggers. KatieN--I had fluid in my middle ear for a while (I am a scuba instructor and spend lots of time in the water). I never got infections but my hearing was affected. One doctor told me to take sudfafed 3 times a day for 30 days. Wrong. Another friend who is a physician's assistant and a hyperbaric medic, told me that research has found that the only way to get fluid out of the middle ear, besides surgery, is to gently equalize several times a day. By equalizing, I mean pinch your nose and blow gently until your ears pop. It worked for me but it took a couple of months. She said that when you do this it opens your eustacian tubes to allow drainage. My little hurricane needs a cuddle. More later. Suzanne

Txaggie - Congrats! That's wonderful.
Try diet rite for soda since it's w/splenda and no caffeine. It definitely doesn't taste quite like diet coke, but it's ok. I like the diet orange. Your tastes will probably change anyway. I drank soda one/day pre-pg, and then I didn't want it as much once pg. Of course, if you can stick to seltzer, even better. I probably have around 100-120 g of carbs/day although it varies a little. I didn't change my eating much except to eliminate most sugar alcohols (the laxative effect was unbearable while pg and didn't seem particularly healthy for the baby) and reduce other artificial sweetners. I try to stick to splenda products if I have something sweet. But, my dr pretty much said in small amounts they're all ok. I also eat more frequently now and added more dairy for carbs and calcium. I find restricting carbs during pg to have an even greater impact on appetite than usual, so sometimes nothing sounds good, but I just stick to what does. I understand your wanting to preserve your weight loss. 30 lbs is great, and you probably already have good habits for eating healthily during your pregnancy. I didn't mention the other day that I found out at my u/s that the baby is "sunny side up" or facing the front of my body although head down. I've now read a lot about how this causes back labor and bad deliveries, c-sections, etc. Anyone have any advice? I ve read some exercises to do on all fours - anyone know if they work to help turn the baby? You can always count on the internet to freak you out! Thanks. Feel better Katie!

Thanks for the tip, Suzanne! The worse thing is that I got water in my ear when I showered yesterday. It is not draining! I'm trying your trick as I type...

Katie, if the water is in your outer ear you can
1) stand on one foot and jump up and down with your head tilted that way (probably not good for pregnant women) 2) lay on your side for a while until it drains (if you have a lot of wax, it may be keeping the water in) 3) mix 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 rubbing alcohol to use as ear drops (100% alcohol is too strong and can burn the ear drum) Whatever you do, don't use Qtips as they will push the water farther in toward the ear drum. Hope you feel better soon. Suz |

Do any of you make smoothies to eat now that you're pregnant? If so, what do you put in them? I was trying to think of something low carb that might have a few extra fruits in it. Otherwise I know I'll be heading towards muffins, bread, etc.
Thanks, txaggie |

Thanks again, Suzanne. I tried 1 and 2, so I will try 3. It's nice to know there are still doctors/people out there that try natural remedies!
txaggie - I make smoothies w/ yogurt, Half 'n Half, frozen fruits, and ice. I can't remember the portions... I'll use milk instead since I added it back a few weeks ago. Yogurt has the most amount of calcium, according to the chart my OB gave me, so you're getting a lot of benefits! It's so cold here, I can't bring myself to making a nice cold smoothie... It sounds good though. |

Trish: I haven't really been able to stomach meats either, thats why this craving is a little weird!!! Its very rare that I eat a hotdog b/c of nitrates/sodium etc.... so I don't know where this craving came from. Your dh is really sweet to make sure you get EXACTLY what you are craving.... substitutions just aren't the same with a TRUE pregancy craving LOL
Katie: Sorry to hear about your ear aches! Ouch!! Hopefully some of the remedies listed on this thread will help!!! Sarah: I am surprised your dr didn't give you something to start TOM. Are you usually "regular". I have NEVER been regular due to PCOS (except when I am on lowcarb).... I would go months, anywhere from 3 to 9 mths. Has your dr tried you on any fertility drugs yet?? strange..... Alessandra: I don't have any words of wisdom on the Sunny Side Up issue. I was sunny side up and my mom said the back pains were awful, in fact she didn't think she was in labor b/c just her back hurt LOL Keep us posted on what you find out!! txaggie: I like smoothies from time to time... I make mine with ice, a little whole fat yogurt, s/f syrups and usually peaches or strawberries (my personal favorites). I REALLY love making yocheese and putting the fruit in, the high fats of the yogurt really help keep you full and it doesn't take much. By making the yocheese you drain out some of the carbs..... its really really yummy and creamy. |

ALLESANDRA – We were just talking about this in our childbirth class… Here’s what you do… Get down on your hands and knees and do pelvic thrusts. Basically, while on hands and knees, you make a motion like a cat getting mad… You tilt your pelvis down, making your back arch up… Does that make ANY sense? Lemme see if I can find a link how to do it…

Angela- I've always been regular. I have never missed a period, other than being on BC Pills. So, this is really strange. They told me not to be concerned unless I went without one for 3 months. I haven't tried any fertility drugs. I don't want to that for awhile yet. I don't want to if I don't have to, ya know?

Sarah, strange strange strange!!! It could be the stress of this whole process affecting TOM, but geez, for someone who has been regular then being 2 months late.... strange! I don't recommend the fertility drugs either - they are pure hell on a person's emotional wellbeing (and not to mention dh's- LOL) I tried clomid and some-other drug from hell that I can't remember the name of. Everything will work out

Forgot to mention to everyone that I started feeling my little butterbean rolling around inside last night.... and s/he is doing it right now. That feeling always gives me a sense of security (if that makes sense) I always worry in the beginning between dr appts when I can't feel anything ::::::::::BIG SIGH OF RELIEF::::::::: Last night when I would lay flat I could sometimes feel a little bump low in my pelvis and when I would touch it it would go away and I could feel the flutters..... cool

I would also love to be added to your thread. I am due 5/9/04 Girl.
I have a 9 yo boy, a 5.5 yo boy and I now have two angel babies (miscarried 12/09/02 and 4/21/03). After much testing I have been told that I have a disease called Anti-phospholipid Antibody Syndrome. This causes clotting (and miscarriages/stillbirths) so I am being monitored closely. I have been terribly lazy always worried something might happen. I have now been told to start a walking program. I have also decided to start eating much better (been completely carbing out for the last year and a half). I am hoping for some great advice on where to start. |
