I promise I'll reply when I'm not being watched (I'm at work) and after I've slept but I just have a question really quick.

I took my glucose test on Wednesday and I got the call yesterday that it came back positive. I need to go back next week for the 3 hour test. My doctor is sending me a prescription (why, I don't know because I haven't gotten a confirmation yet) and a diet that I need to follow for 3-4 days before I take the 3 hour test. I've been told by some that it's a high carb diet and by others that it'll be a low carb diet. I guess I'll find out once I get it. Has anyone been diagnosed with gestational diabetes? What's the likelyhood for false positives? Could it be because I ate too much Halloween candy even though I fasted for 10 hours like I was supposed too? I'm kinda nervous about this because I have diabetes on both sides of my family. I didn't have this problem with Kayla and I've gained less this time around but I also started out about 20 lbs heavier than I was when I got pregnant with Kayla. I know this is something that will (or should) go away once the pregnancy is over but being that it's on both sides of my family, I'm worried that this is just a warning sign that the real thing is coming later. Any feedback Thanks girls!

I hope you all have a wonderful morning!! It's FRIDAY - WooHoo!!

I just did a little searching ... it's a high carb diet for 3-4 days prior to the test. Great, I hope I don't gain much from it. Ugh, this bites.

Poor Heidi!! That sucks, girl!!! When is your next test? Hopefully it's nothing and everything will turn out well. I've never known anyone with gestational diabetes, so have no idea how that affects things, etc... I know quite a few people with diabetes in general, though - some take pills to manage it and a lady that I work with has an insulin pump. ((HUGS)) Keep us posted.

Heidi- Yikes that you have to do all af that - like prgnant women dont have enough to worry about already. I think that having gestational diabetes raises the odd that a woman will develope type 2 diabetes later in life, but greater risk factors are things that you are already on top of - weight, exercise and diet. (((huggs))). BTW - the pumpkin patch picture is adorable.

I went to the Doctors yesterday. They couldn't find a heartbeat which isnt unusual b/c I'm at 11 weeks and obese, but b/c of the bleeding last week they scheduled me for an ultrasound next Tuesday. I think I must have been having a hormonal moment b/c I asked lots of questions that gave away how insecure I'm feeling. Even my DH was like - what is up with you? Oh well. I'm embarrased but I cant have been the most neurotic woman he's seen.... In the meantime I'm reasuring myself that this is all normal stuff and looking forward to getting another peek at the critter...

Be well all!

Hey Ladies good morning to all!

Heidi- I am sending you lots of ((HUGS)) so you won't get too stressed out. Good luck on oyur next test.

Lauren- Hello and how are you this morning?

Yesterday I was so sick..the morning sickness is kicking in so I went to the dr because I couldn't see out of my left eye.

The doctor said it was because I was dehydrated and I have been having the worst migraines.

So now I am on yet another prescription or nausea. I have only gained 1 pound and I should have gained at least 3-4 pounds. I got to hear my baby's heartbeat again. Beating like a choo choo train.

My DH and I are fighting over if we are going to find out the sex or not. But of course I WILL have my way and I WILL find out!

I'm feeling much better today....

Sarajewel:::

I think it's good that you asked lots of questions, and don't worry a bit about sounding neurotic! I think we all worry a ton during a pregnancy in general, and some times are just worse than others. Were they able to 'see' the heartbeat yet? I was 9 weeks, 2 days at my appt. and instead of listening for the heartbeat they just used the mini sonogram thing to look at it and we saw it just fine. Good luck at your U/S Tuesday, that's so exciting!!! ((HUGS))

Fasting/Bloodwork

Dean and I are getting life insurance and last night the medical examiner came to our home to take urine, blood, and our vital stats. We had to fast from 1pm - 6pm and it absolutely KILLED me!!!!! I eat little meals often, so going for that many hours was hard!!! When she took my blood it hurt SOOOOOOOOOO bad - I wondered why until she realized my vein collapsed. Thank God she was able to get what she needed from my other arm. I was crying and everything, which was sort of embarassing - but I couldn't help it! I mean, never in my life has it hurt that bad! Poor me...hahahaha!

Thanks guys! I think if I get the stuff my doctor sends me before Saturday, I'll be able to take the test on Wednesday (I'm off that night so that would work good for me). I'll keep ya'll posted.

Sara - OMG, I'm totally neurotic! LOL. Don't even worry about it. Like you said, I'm sure he's seen worse. How cool that you get the see your "little critter" soon though! I don't think they heard the heartbeat the first time on me either if I remember correctly. But it's sure there now! Thanks for the compliment on the PP picture. She was so not into it though. Kinda bummed me out.

Cyn - How scary that you couldn't see out of your left eye! I know about the migranes ... I get them too (but it's never impaired my vision that bad). I wouldn't wish those on anyone! Take care of yourself girl! I'm glad you're feeling better today.

Lauren - Oh wow! I can only imagine how bad that hurt! I'm a pretty hard draw so they usually have to fish around to find my veins. Ouch! I have the worst time fasting. I get lightheaded when I don't eat.

I'm not supposed to be on the computer right now but too bad. Neener Neener Neener! OMG, I need sleep! LOL.

(((((Heidi)))))
Don't stress too much. Its very common for women to get Gestational Diabetes (GD) in second or third pregnancies and not in the first. Not to upset you but I believe its 90% of women who get GD will develop Type II Diabetes later in life. If it runs in your family that is a very big indicator that you could get it as well. Its nothing you did, or ate, if it runs in your family that is probably where its coming from. The myth that if you are overweight you will get Type II Diabetes is not exactly true. Family history has a much larger impact that weight, though weight is part of the equation. I work for a medical device company and we deal with a lot of diabetes issues in our research, so I won't bore you with all the technical information. Just know that, doing a low-carb diet is the best way to avoid getting it later in life. Even if you do get it you may be able to manage it with a low carb diet and never have to use Insulin.
After you take the 3 hour test (and IF you even have GD) tell your doctor that you would really like to manage this GD with diet rather than insulin. I know a few women who had GD and basically went on Atkins while pregnant and were fine. Depending on how your body reacts to the 3 hour test will gauge if you will need insulin or not. Hopefully you will not have it, but don't worry either way. We are all here for you.
Sorry if that was too much information.

Sara - Don't ever feel guilty about asking a million questions. That is what you should do. When I go in my midwife drills me the whole time asking..."do you have any questions" and some times she will say....think of some questions...I know you have them. I usually draw a blank when I am there.

Hope everyone is having a great day today!

Hi Heidi,

Do you know what your blood sugar level was on the one hour test.

I flunked my 1 hr - but just barely. Cutoff was 150 and mine was 153 or something. And they did NOT have me fast beforehand.

On the three hour I fasted for 12 hrs before hand and all the levels came back low or normal. I was actually HYPOglycemic on my fasting blood sugar, it was around 50, normal is 70-110.

Diabetes does not run in my family as far as I know. A lot of people flunk the 1 hr. You had some differences though - you fasted before the 1 hr, that makes it more accurate. And you were given a prescription to take? What is the prescription for? I didn't get a prescription at all...

Heidi-I dont anything about glucose testing. I wish I did know more about it. I know that diabetes does run in my family. But it is normally when we hit our 50's. I just wanted to wish you luck and not to worry too much ok? {hugs}

Okay I need someone to spank me...I mean seriously give me a good swift kick. I had the worst craving for donuts last night and two donuts and one eclair I mean I loved every minute of it..but man the scales were not nice to me this morning...two lbs since yesterday. Oh well...just gotta chug that fluid. right?

I was doing pretty good..but I just caved yesterday. Oh well, I will do better.

Heidi, I had GD with my first pg, with no risk factors, I was young, thin, and no family history. It was scary but everything turns about just fine as long as you keep your blood sugars under control.

I flunked the one hour then really flunked the 3 hour. They put me on the "diabetes diet" which was TOO MANY CARBS to control my blood sugar. For some women it works just fine, though.

They made me keep a food journal, check my blood sugar 4 times per day, and see a nutritionist, where we would argue about carbs. My blood sugars were not great on the diet despite following it to the letter, and they said the next step was insulin. I kept asking why can't I lower my carbs? and they kept saying "the baby needs carbs" Finally I talked them down to 130 carbs per day minimum. The original diet included about 15-30 carbs at breakfast, and 60-75 at the other meals. Yikes!

But MANY people flunk the one hour and pass the 3 hour. Even if you have severe GD as long as you treat it you and the baby will be just fine. If it is really severe you could end up on insulin but that is not the end of the world. The only times bad things happen is when women go untreated or neglect their diets. Hope that helps

And yes it does increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life but I didn't think it was as high as 90%, I thought it was 60%, but maybe the stats have changed.

Actually I never got GD with preg #2, so I wonder if I will this time?

At least that would keep my animal appetite under control - I even dreamed about cinnamon rolls and donuts last night.'

Hi Lauren, I too swear I feel the baby move several times per day. I remember these feeling from last time but not as early. I thought it was too early but why knows?

Talk to you all later!

Morning everyone. Happy Friday!!!!!!!!

SINNRAH: Donuts--yumm! love em! Don't worry about it--blame it on the baby Drink your water and those 2 pounds will go away

Heidi: I have to take my GD test next time I go--Dec 1st. He gave me no instructions or anything. I have a friend that ate too much candy a few days before her test and she flunked hers too---maybe it is the candy. Hope all goes ok with the 3 hr!!

I am headed to Myrtle Beach today! Yippee!! Leaving here at 1pm..can't wait! It is supposed to be cold but I don't care--I just am glad to get away!

Take Care--

It's funny how Dr.s give different instructions before the GTT. I have my 1 hour test next Friday and my Dr. told me to eat a very low carb brekkie of bacon and eggs or something.
Weird? My sister in laws Dr. told her to eat a bagel and some fruit last week before hers and she failed.

I really don't want to deal with the 3 hour test. I'm gonna try to be a crab angel for most of the week next week. At least no sweets.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, I am so damn glad it's FRIDAY!!!

Aww Sinrah- that's great! And don't worry about the doughnuts. It isn't your fault

I went shopping yesterday and bought turkey breast, pepparoni, peanuts, celery and cream cheese, peanut butter crackers and a block of cheese for the fridge at work. Now I have no more excuses to send co-workers by Mcdonalds on their lunch breaks for french fries I never ask really, they offer. How sweet. Gotta stop that.

I have been starving lately.

Hi to everyone- hope you all have a wonderful and safe weekend!

Great! I know you guys are trying at least every other day now right just in case your signals of "O" are a little off <wink>

I was gonna mail you the 3 OPKs and the 2 HPTs I have but you said you don't need them. I read they aren't that accurate either, but they worked for me. I got pg the night it showed (+).

Good luck! Crossing my fingers here.

Slyvia hasn't checked in- wonder if she's holding her sweet baby??
