Hi all-
It smowed here yesterday. When I woke up this morning there was still snow on the porch roof - I dont expect that it will stay. It was wild driving yesterday morning. Morning sickness is challenging. This morning when I woke up my DH brought me my sea bands and gingersnaps to eat before I got up. I think it helped. Before I woke up I was dreaming that the bed was a boat... I'm greatful that today is friday! I want to SLEEP this weekend. Slept 9 hours last night. Hope you are all well. |

good Morning,
Can you all believe I am actually up. I was waiting for my postings on ebay to see if I won...and I did. lol I was trying to win an old photograph of a postman for my mom. she is a mail carrier and collects that kind of stuff. so I have one Christmas present out of the way.. ![]() Well Sunday will be my first day in my second trimester. Wow..I hope it goes alright. I am going to go and buy some stretchy waist band blue jeans this weekend. I wore my size ones yesterday that were so freaking tight I could hardly breath. My Dh said he liked my butt in them. rofl. I think I may be finally getting my sex drive back...man that has been a hassle. Going from a strong libido to nothing is really hard. But DH is very understanding about how my hormones are sooooo out of what right now... As you can tell I am gabby...lol No wonder I am already a blabbermouth by my postings.. ![]()

Ok, here's a tough question:
Cloth v.s Disposable
I've been reading and reading and reading about this, and I still feel a little torn. It def. appears that cloth is cheaper (although you really have to order high quality stuff online in order to *not* have a bad experience), but that you have to be willing to either 1) dunk nasty diapers in the toilet (eww) or 2) have some kind of sprayer thing to flush them out (into bucket which gets dumped into toilet) 3) do an extra load of diapers every 2 days or so. The consensus seems to be that leaking shouldn't be any worse, if again, you have all the new high quality "all-in-ones" or proper wrap and pocket diapers and prefolds and whatnot. Additionally, I guess there's some concern about the gel in disposables that some people find beads on their babies behinds and genitals, and apparently a chemical in this stuff was banned from tampons several years ago. What else? Increased diaper rash. Personally, I find the leak thing hard to believe and I the whole thought of dunking diapers in the toilet and doing loads of poopy laundry all the time and trying to keep them smell and stain-free kinda gross. (On the other hand, the cloth diaper proponents were claiming cloth was better at containing "breastfeeding diaper explosions" that disposables were and that they did less *other poopy laundry* as a result) I don't know what to think. Saving anywhere from $1200-$1500 per child with cloth does sound appealing (especially since I'd love to have 3) and I would worry if that gel stuff was getting all over my baby. And diaper rashes. Also, avoiding "poopy diaper explosions" sounds like a plus, too. On the other hand, it sounds gross, like an enormous hassle and I find the leakproof aspect hard to believe. Any experienced Moms want to weigh in before I make myself even more crazy? LOL

Good morning all.
3diva - I am a first time Mom but I am going all cloth! My reasons are many but mainly, cost, effect on the environment, health of the baby. I have a few good friends who use cloth and none of them dunk in the toilet or use a sprayer. Though I am going to get that sprayer, it seems awesome! One uses these toilet paper like liners that she flushes in the toilet. Another just does a pre-rinse in her washer before actually washing the diapers. Another uses a wet pail method. I am going dry pail, but there are options. I am very pro cloth. Just makes sense to me. Even if it is more laundry to do, I think its worth it. As far as the breast milk blow outs, from what I hear they are actually more common in disposable than in cloth. But it is important to have the right kind of diapers for your newborn. I have some kissaloves that I am going to use for my newborn, they seem great, have gathers around the legs and waist to help keep the liquid from exploding....and I got all different covers, not sure which I will like best, I will just have to experiment and see. Sinnrah - You can still have a doula and use medications / drugs. A doula is more of a support person for you, helps you get through labor. Generally most people who use a doula do so because they want to go natural and the doula helps keep them focused. I am going to try and deliver all natural, planning on the water birth, and I have considered a doula. More because I am single and wanted to have someone to help me through labor. Though I have decided to just have some family there as my support. This is my first, and I am a little nervous, but I have read a bazillion articles and books and birth stories and I feel confident that I can do this. On a different note.....have any of you noticed that you are always dropping food etc on your tummy. Seems every time I eat I get something on my shirt these days. Does pregnancy make you a slob? Seems at least once a day I am dripping or crumbling something on my shirt. Okay maybe I am just having a moment, I was eating pineapple, and sure enough, dropped a chunk on my shirt. ![]() Hope everyone has a great day!!! ![]()

Hi Diva,
It's funny you should mention diapers, I'm about to go buy my supply of cloth diapers this weekend. Except there'll be no dunking in the toilet for me, nuh-uh, no ma'm! I don't think I could stomach it day in and day out. The system they have is diaper liners that you can toss with the poop in the toilet, and then you just have the pee to deal with. Apparently you can keep a pail of some kind of pre-wash solution handy to soak the wet diapers until you're ready to do a load of laundry, and then just dump the whole pail in the washer. This, I can handle. The place I'm going to also has diaper covers that apparently are great to avoid any leaks. I actually got a generous gift certificate for this place at my baby shower so I'm looking forward to going. They also sell slings, nursing bras and other stuff. You can check it out at bummis.com, they have retailers in the US. Sheree, thanks for the suggestion, I should have tried it last night. Was up almost all night with congested sinuses and a painful ear. ![]()

MsBadu-from what I understood from my doc that a doula was strictly for natural childbirth...no drugs oh and for support. But my husband will be there. so I dont really need the doula. And I want my epidural. LOL
3Dive-i am not doing cloth diapers. I am doing disposable. I dont have my own washer and dryer and I would have to wash a lot of diapers all the time. You may think I am lazy but I live in an apartment complex....and I would rather do disposable. Hey Sylv how r u? |

I guess I was mistaken, I really thought you could use a doula either way....but anyhow, doula or not, I am sure you will have a smooth delivery. Hopefully I will too!

I'm environmentally conscious, but the hassle of cloth is just too much for me, a working mother, to deal with. If I'm out in public with a poopy diaper I want to be able to change that sucker and trash it. Not try to wash it and deal with all that mess. That's just my 2 cents! |

The diaper thing... I think I'll do a combo. My poor lil bean will have to be in day care, so I'll have to use disposable some of the time, but I'll use cloth at home...
It's all about preference. With Allison, I used all disposable. |

Hello to everone! Regarding diapers, gee I never really thought about it that much. I suppose I will go with disposable just for convenience sake. Regarding the Triple Screen, I was relieved to know that everything was perfectly normal. I don't know what I would have done if something came back abnormal but I don't think I would be able to have an amnio. It just sounds too risky to me. I would have just gone through with the pregnancy and prayed for everything to be ok. The peace of mind was worth it for me. Laura: this is a description of the Triple Screen from kidshealth.org: "During the 16th to 18th week of pregnancy, expectant mothers typically are offered a blood test called the triple screen test or triple marker. For the screening, a sample of blood is drawn from the mother to measure three basic things: the levels of hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estriol, which are produced by the placenta, and the level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), which is produced by the fetus. The levels of these three substances in the blood can help doctors identify a fetus at risk for certain birth defects such as neural tube defects like spina bifida or chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome. In determining the results of the test, doctors take into account the mother's age, weight, and ethnicity; if she is diabetic; if she is having twins or other multiples; and the gestational age of the fetus. Many of these factors affect the levels of the substances being measured and the interpretation of the test results, so the accuracy of this information is vital. If any of the given information is incorrect, the results from the screening may be inaccurate as well. Receiving Abnormal Results If you have undergone the triple screen test and received abnormal results, there is no need to worry yet. Just because the test is abnormal doesn't mean that your child has a birth defect. Rather, an abnormal triple screen indicates that the fetus should be evaluated further. Usually, when a pregnant woman's results show high levels of AFP, pointing to a possible risk of spina bifida or other neural tube defects, her doctor will order a detailed ultrasound to examine the fetus, including the fetal skull and spine. In addition, an ultrasound can confirm the age of the fetus and whether the woman is carrying multiples. The doctor also may offer amniocentesis, which is the withdrawal of amniotic fluid from the uterus for further testing. If a woman's triple screen results reveal low levels of AFP and high levels of estriol and hCG, she has an increased risk of having a baby with Down syndrome. The next step after receiving this test result is usually an ultrasound to confirm the baby's due date and to look for any obvious abnormalities. Unfortunately, ultrasound is not a very good test for picking up Down syndrome - in fact as many as 50% of cases of Down syndrome look entirely normal on a mid-trimester ultrasound. For this reason, patients are offered amniocentesis so chromosome testing can be done on the fetal cells that are found in the amniotic fluid. In general, high AFP levels are not a cause for alarm. Some doctors will recommend extra rest and follow closely those women who have high AFP levels with no other explanation because they could have an increased risk of having low birth weight or premature babies. If there is a need for concern, your doctor will let you know. If you have any questions or concerns about triple screen testing, it might also be a good idea to discuss your feelings with your doctor or to seek the advice of a genetic counselor. Reviewed by: George Macones, MD Date reviewed: February 2003"

Hello!!!
Yes, I am STILL awake and it is nearly 6 p.m. over here!! Miracle of miracles!! ![]() Diapers/nappies - I have always used disposable. I am with PFGal - I am a working mother, and keeping house as well as newborn means that cloth would be TOO MUCH! Kudos to those who go natural, but this bambino will be in disposables too! With my DDs, breastfed explosions were RE VOLT ING but definitely contained in disposables! But the smell - PEE YEW!! ![]() It would seem I am not the only one who has lost their libido - June/July DH and I were at it like rabbits but these last couple of months I am just NOT interested. Makes it kinda difficult, but we have a few chats about the whole thing and he understands that it is not personal just hormonal! Has anyone else noticed a majorly enhanced sense of smell?! It's got so bad that there are some people I have to walk away from because their aroma seems to be so strong! DH is still smoking (not around me, but still smoking) and last night he gave me a hug and I almost threw up! I had to ask him to have a shower before I could stand him near me because the smell was so bad! Tell me I am not alone in this one!Anyway, time to do the shopping but so cool to actually be alive in the evening! ![]() Laters x |

What are people's views on the Triple Test? If something came up, what would you do?!
I had the triple screen with all three of my pregnancies. The first two were negative. This last one came up positive for possible down syndrome. I was a little freaked out. My OB sent me to a perinatologist, who did a more in-depth ultrasound to do different measurements. She said that everything looked fine, and the possibility of the baby having down syndrome was about 1%, but offered us an amniocentesis if we wanted to be sure. We decided against it, since the odds were so low, and we wouldn't terminate the pregnancy anyway if the baby did have down syndrome. I'm still thinking about cloth diapers. I did disposables with the last two, but I worked full-time and just didn't want to deal with the washing aspect. I don't have to go back full-time after this baby, so maybe I'll try it and see how it goes. I am the oldest of six children, and remember well rinsing cloth diapers in the toilet and putting them in the stinky bucket. I also remember how bad they leaked. Have they gotten any better, and where are some good places to check them out? TIA Kristen ![]()

I tried cloth diapers with #1 and gave it up after a few months, it ended up being a huge waste of money and time for me.
First, the moment that diaper gets wet you have to change it, and half the time I ended up changing the outfit as well. My daughter was very small so it was hard to get a good snug fit and the cloth diaper was like this huge wad around her and between her legs. The dirty diapers were quite disgusting, I used a dry pail but felt like I was doing lots of laundry and it smelled bad I ended up going to disposable, and honestly if you buy cheap diapers I really don't think they cost much more once you factor in the cost of quality cloth diapers, covers, liners, laundry soap, water, wear and tear on your washer and dryer and of course your precious time. I think when disposable diapers first came out there was a much bigger difference in cost between cloth and disposables. I used Dri Bottoms from Walmart and rarely if ever have leaks, even from breastfed "explosions" I am also very sensitive to smell right now, and can only eat whatever sounds good at the moment. So far staying low-carb during the day has been easy. But certain smells make me feel sick, and it changes so I never know what will make me feel sick or really hungry. Crazy Have a great day all!

Wow!
Thanks for all the diaper lowdowns...
I have to admit I'm leaning towards disposable at the moment, and this may be a terrible reason, but mainly because I don't want to have to *THINK* about one more thing. Between being pregnant, working full-time, going to school part-time (and having to do both of the last 2 after baby is here), it just sounds too time consuming and complicated. |
