Just found out I am pregnant, help me???

Ok, I just found out about 20 minutes ago that I am pregnant. I am in deep ketosis. I have been on Atkin's since 12/02/02 and have lost 81.5# and planned on losing at least 100# total.

Ok, for those who have been in my shoes... what do I need to do? What do I add to my diet that will take me out of ketosis, but not make me start gaining weight like crazy???

Any advice you have please throw my way. I am so excited about this pregnancy, it was very much wanted and I don't want to do anything to harm my baby... so I need to know if eating lowcarb is ok while pregnant? Etc etc...

Thanks in advance!!!

Congratulations! Atkins for Life (or maintanence) is fine for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Probably the healthiest way to do that is to add in more veggies, fruits, dairy products (especially yogurt), and nuts (especially walnuts, which are high in essential fatty acids, which your developing baby needs for brain development). Fatty fishes (ie, salmon) are great for your child, but you need to be really careful about potential pollutants--this means that farmed salmon has more risks than canned salmon (which is usually from wild fish, and much less polluted). Stay away from tuna fish and cold water fish--the risks of mercury poisoning are just too high during the early stages of pregnancy (when the fetus is very sensitive to heavy metals). You don't need to eat sugar or grains, but yogurt and cheese are really good for your child, and so are lots and lots of fruits and veggies.

YES YES YES! low carb IS okay during pregnancy....and it saved me from gaining a WHOLE lot more weight than i did. I had to add a FEW things to the overall diet....but i kept it much the same. I added cottage cheese.....One piece of whole wheat toast a day...and alot more vegis! plus took prenatal vitamins! I actually lost weight when i first started...even though i was pregnant. its basically like a diebetic diet they'd put you on if you had GD while pregnant! congrats to you!!!

Maintenence is great..but you also might want to check out sugar busters. Many low-carbers have switched to this plan..which includes fruit an some whole grains..and does NOT have you in ketosis. Congrats!!

Tiva hit the nail on the head. Prenatal vit. are very important and so is getting enough folic acid. VERY important for a "bun in the oven". And please heed the advice about staying away from tuna fish. If this is your first child you might want to get the book "What to Expect When Expecting" you can check it out from the library if you want to look it over before you buy it. GREAT BOOK, and Full of info.

Congrats. That is Wonderful. And a big WHOO HOO for the weight that you have lost so far.

Good for you, Good for Baby!

After several years of low carbing, I can't see how any diet could be more healthy than a low carb one for you or the baby. Just add more fruit and vegetables and rest comfortably in the fact that you are doing the BEST for your baby. Don't let anything scare you into thinking you have to change. How did man evolve if not on a low carb diet?

Congrats to you on the little one; life's greatest reward.

This isn't my first baby. We have a 6 year old daughter, and a 3 year old son...

Thanks so much everyone for your advice. I am still in shock and so happy!!!

I went and got my prenatal vitamins and folic acid last night, in fact!!! Took them as soon as I got them. That's one thing I am seriously diligent about when pregnant - making sure I get my vitamins and eat right. No caffeine, etc. Which this time it's gonna be much easier to eat right because I am already used to eating good things, no cakes and candies!!

I wonder about the gestational diabetes test they give you late on though. That syrupy sugary drink. I wonder how it will affect me after not having sugar for so long now, and even longer by then. Are you allowed to skip that test if you are already eating like a diabetic would be eating???

Congrats Feisty!
I am new here, not new to lo-carbing and certainly not new to pregnancy! I have given birth to 10 children and work as a labor assistant and doula.

Lo-carbing is great while pregnant, but be sure to not ever be in ketosis while pregnant. Ketones destroy fetal tissue.

You can eat the same way as you have been on Atkins, but just add more fruit and veggies to keep you out of ketosis. Make sure your protein is a good quality type. You should aim for 100gms of protein per day to lessen your chances of pre-eclampsia and damage to yourself. For more info read "What Every Pregnant Woman Should Know" by Dr. Thomas Brewer.

And I am not sure how your glucose test will react since you have not had sugar. I believe you must consume at least 150gms of carbs each day for 3 days in order for the test to be accurate. Ask your OB.

I am certain that if you stay away from starches and consume plenty of veggies and quality proteins you will not have gestational diabetes Or much morning sickness.

Most of all--love that little sweetie baby tucked in your womb beneath your heart! Lucky you!
