LC'ing and Breastfeeding.....

Good Morning again!

I'm about to give birth (any day now). While I was pregnant, I didn't LC, and would like to start back up after I have the baby. I didn't gain too much weight while pregnant, and maybe will have only gained an extra 25 pounds (above low sig). I plan on Breastfeeding (and using formula) for the first 6 weeks, but as soon as I go back to work, I'll be using formula only (or close to only).

Is it safe to LC while breastfeeding and using formula (both)? Or should I do a more moderate approach and just not eat any 'bad' carbs (i.e. sugar, white bread, potatos, pasta etc.)? Or should I wait the six weeks and THEN start LC'ing. While breastfeeding is important to me, so is getting back to a healthy body-state. I know that breastfeeding will help with that either way, and since my first child was unable to breastfeed this may be a moot point.

Anyone who has LC'd while breastfeeding, or who has researched this topic would have my greatest appreciation in responding to this question!

Thanks again and *hugs*

Loli

Stick to maintenance foods...that should be perfectly safe. I breastfeed my daughter but I waited until she was only nursing a few times a day and was getting the majority of her nutrition from other sources before I started doing a modified induction. She is still nursing a bit, and I've seen no ill effects on her whatsoever. If I were you, I would start out with maintenance until the baby is on formula, then do a full induction. Good luck!

Thanks Adrielle, that's what I thought I should do, too!

According to Dr. A's book, you should NOT be in ketosis while pregnant or breastfeeding. They don't know yet either way how passing ketones through breastmilk affects an infant. That being said there's no reason not to low carb on the "maintance" part of the diet. Then induct when your baby is on formula.

Good luck and congratulations!

La Leche League has an article on LC eating

Hi everyone,

I'm new to low carb eating, have lost 8 pounds and 7 inches so far and I am pretty pleased. I also nursed all four of my kids, ages 10, 8, 4 and 3. I'm a RN and also own a private lactation support practice. Here are 2 links to my business websites:
KonzaBaby Perinatal Services
breast-pumps.com

I thought you nursing mamas might want to see what La Leche League has to say about low-carbing. Here is the link:

LLL Low carb FAQ

I've cared for a few moms who were eating LC that they sometimes have experienced a drop in milk supply but when they added back some limited carbs like you do in OWL, their milk supply came right back but it took about a week.

HTH!

you can definitely do low carb while nursing
just not a ketogenic diet
atkins maintenance or sugarbusters would work

Thank you everyone!

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply to my post. I'll definately read and re-read all of the great info you guys have given me.

Hopefully I'll be able to start back soon, as I had contractions all night. Not enough to actually go to the hospital, but enough to warrant a call to the doctor. Keep your fingers crossed that this is it! Can't wait to have a little girl after 2 very rambunctous boys!

Thanks again to all of you!

*hugs*
