Sugar Alcohols and Breastfeeding
When you consume sugar alcohols, are they passed through the breast milk?
I'm wondering because I ate some chocolate with sugar alcohols and not too long after (he nursed soon after I ate it), my 15 month old son had an explosive, watery poop (and he's not the kind to have them, not to mention he's usually pretty routine in his BM's and I wasn't expecting him to go this morning). Just something I'm curious about because if I can't stay away for my sake, I will for his . Carla V. |

my guess is that they would.....in the sense that excessive consumption may cause us gastrointestinal distress, they may do so for the baby....
same way they say not to eat "gassy" veggies as the gassiness may be passed on to the baby.... when my first born was in nicu, 19 years ago, he was experience an upset stomach and they could not figure out why....one night while hubby and i were leaving they overheard us talking about going to wendy's for a chocolate frosty as it was a routine for us......that was the culprit!!! so sometimes things that do not effect us, will still effect baby... when my last born refused to stop breastfeeding, i had no choice but to have some hot mustard on my eggroll at lunch....that afternoon, he refused to ever breastfeed again after one swallow...actually, i did not think it would be that bad!!! |

lol, I don't think anything I could ever eat would deter my son from BF. He seems to be a permanant fixture no matter what I eat!
![]() But what you said I think is true. He generally isn't affected by what I eat but then I haven't had much in the way of sugar alcohols before. I shouldn't be eating them anyway, even though a treat once in a while isn't too bad. I just shouldn't over do it like I did ![]() Carla V. |
