atkins and pregnancy

Please excuse me if I am not posting this improperly, I've been lurking for some time, but not contributing. I'm rather new at this.

I have been within 10 lbs of my goal for about a year now. It's slow going because I have PCOS. I am so sensitive to carbs that I cannot eat anything that tastes sweet or it knocks me out of ketosis. My CCL is about 25 carbs/day.

I have just stopped taking the pill, and am waiting the recommended 2-3 months before trying to get pregnant. I'm hoping, through really hard work, to be at my goal by that time.

I need to know when I should increase my carb level to get out of ketosis--when we start trying to get pregnant or once we know I'm pregnant? I'd hate to gain a lot of weight while we're trying. How critical is it to be out of ketosis at the beginning of the pregnancy?

One glass of milk ought to knock me right out of ketosis!

Your advice is appreciated!

Check out the pregnancy thread, lots of great people and info there.

In my opinion its easy to get out of ketosis. A cup of fruit, a glass of pure fruit juice, or even a few wasa crackers will do the trick for me. I too have a very low CCL. Going to the maintaince or pre maintaince level of Atkins is generally what most are doing while pg.

Honestly now just starting my 5th month, I have been eating not so low carb and drinking lots of fruit juices so I am far far far from ketosis....but thats another story, good luck on trying to conceive.

Hi there!

I am currenty 6 months and also have PCOS. I didn't really start adding more carbs until I found out I was pregnant. While I was trying, I did add more fruit, now I just kinda eat whatever, which isn't good.

I have only gained 12 lbs to date! I'm really excited because I gained 60 total with my daughter (4 yrs ago) and that was before I was diagnosed.

It took me 8 months to get pregnant, so I couldn't imagine going off plan for that long. I just found out I'm pregnant and had a high risk OB tell me that low carbing was fine, just stay out of ketosis. She also told me (at 5 weeks) that weight loss levels wouldn't have a negative outcome that early.

I suggest staying on plan until you find out you're pregnant. I would stock up on pregnancy tests and test monthly to make sure you catch your pregnancy early on. (BTW, the cheapest ones I found were at the dollar store (99c only and Greenbacks are in my area). Definately beats 8-10 at Target.

Good luck!!!

Everyone is different, but I thought I would share my experience. My doctor actually put me ON the pill to get me pregnant. She wanted 3 good months on the pill with a regular period and then stop the pill and immediately try to get pregnant. We went right to it, and according to her, we were pg within like 7 days after stopping the pill. This was awesome for us because we had been trying for about 8 years.

Good luck to you. I agree on getting as much off as you can now. Just be wary of undereating because I think that can delay your cycle. Stay healthy, and good luck!
