Pregnant and needing lots of info!!!
I am 8 weeks pregnant and even though I have changed my diet to get out of ketosis I am still losing wieght. I have brought my carbs up to between 100 & 120 a day and have uped my calories from 1200 to 1500 a day I have added whole grains and wheats to my diet. My doctor said this would be fine as long as I stay out of ketosis. I am still losing 1 to 1 1/2 pounds a week. I have read on here before that you are not suppose to lose any wieght while pregnant because of something it releases in your blood that can hurt the baby??? I don't feel like I'm starving myself, as a matter of fact I have a hard time eating the extra food now. Does anyone know if losing while pregnant is okay or not? Won't be able to reply till this evening, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance lost 240/163/120 |

I'm guessing lots of women lose in the first trimester because of nausea. If you are eating well and getting in all your nutritional requirements and are not in ketosis, I don't think you need to worry. By the 2nd trimester, you should start gaining.

LDC, I am by no means a medical expert, but I have had three children at various weights and health levels.
If you are eating 100 carbs a day and consuming 1500 calories, that should be enough to support you. I don't know, however, if it's enough to support your baby as well. If you are still losing weight, that could mean there is not enough to support the baby. Could you contact a nutritionist/dietician just to make sure? I know you are thinking of the baby first and foremost and maybe this extra step could help. When I was pg with our third child, I developed gestational diabetes and they had me on a diet that was similar to Atkins. My carbs were around 80 and my cals were about 1800. The only other difference is that I was 6 months pg and weighed 270 at the time, so there was already plenty of nutrition laying around for ds!!!! On that diet, I only gained 8 pounds the last 3 months and it made a grand total of 17 pounds for the entire pregnancy. (I then had a C-Section and lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks, but that's a whole other thread!!) I have always heard that you shouldn't lose weight when you are pg - I'm sure you were told the same thing at one point. Maybe you could try your 120 carbs and 1500 calories and make sure to consume plenty of calcium - especially whole milk. I was told each time to drink 2 glasses a day. I'm anxious to hear what others have to say. I didn't know about Atkins before I had our last child, so I have no knowledge of how it affects the body. |

When I was pregnant with the twins I lost 42 pounds and gained 13 in my last trimester.
First thing.....the baby is gonna take from your body. The baby will get what it needs and you will have the left overs. If you are eating well and meeting all of the nutritional requirements you should be fine. Keep in mind that if the baby is getting what it needs and you aren't......that can really affect several things about your body. I think that if you are providing an accurate account of your meals to your OB and he/she doesn't see any problem with your weight loss you should be fine. I am sure that you will start gaining when you enter your second trimester. I haven't heard anything about the bad blood statement you mentioned. I can't imagine how that could even be possible. If anyone knows anything different please send me some links to info. I think that you are probably doing great and it's obvious that you're gonna be a great mommy. You care about this little one so much already. Good luck to you!

i lost weight with my last pregnancy
with my last pregnancy i had gestational diabetes. i had only gained about 7 lbs at the time we found this out. btw - i weighed 233 when i got pregnant. when we found out i had gestational diabetes, i was put on a lower carb diet ... and lost weight consistently throughout the rest of the pregnancy. when i had the baby (9 days early) i was 11 lbs UNDER pre-pregnancy weight .... weighing 222. my doctor was not worried at all about me losing the weight because i had enough stored fat on my body. my baby weighed 8 lbs 9 oz and was a beautiful HEALTHY baby boy!
i think as long as you are eating healthy, your baby will take what it needs. and even if you WEREN'T eating healthy ... the baby STILL takes what it needs and it is then YOUR body that would suffer. it sounds like you are eating very healthy ... just make sure to drink your milk! very good for you AND the baby! good luck and congratulations! |

I had a similar experience as bcnile...without the twins, only one baby! I got pg at approx 210 lbs and I lost weight throughout, gaining 12 lbs in the third trimester. After my c section I was smaller then when I began. My eating habits did change while pg, I craved watery fruit and lost my sense of hunger so had to make an effort to eat, which I did. I also lost my sweet tooth. So no wonder I lost weight. My doc was ok with this as she explained, as bcnile did, that the baby takes all of the nutrients it needs first, you get what is left. So feed yourself and your baby (and it sounds like you are) and kick back and enjoy the ride!! Bonus if you don't balloon up immediately! ![]()
